Going generational is easy when you realize that you have Donald Sutherland from the bow and arrow movies.
From there you go to the one where he is in the tank and says "negative waves" all the time.
And that movie had the dude from All in the Family who was also in In the Heat of the Night.
Which had Sidney Poitier who was in the remake of the Jackel which had Bruce Willis in it.
Bruce Willis was in Ocean's Twelve which had that guy from the third Godfather movie in it.
Which had Deniro in it.
Which had Robert Mitchem in it.
Robert Mitchem and Jimmy Stewart were in The Big Sleep.

With the Deniro->Mitchum connection you can just go Lawrence->Deniro->Mitchum->Stewart via Silver Linings Playbook

I don't think "The Bow And Arrow Movies" or "That Guy From That Movie" are considered valid answers. That's the challenge of the game--you're supposed to be able to name the actual movies and actors/actresses that make the connections.

That's just my take on it, though.

Negative Waves bit is from Kelly's Heroes.

You have to actually say the name of the movie and the actor. I mention that in the "is this cheating" rules but also point out that if you have a good sense of what you're thinking of and it's on the tip of your tongue, that is the kind of thing you can look up online to confirm information.

Jimmy Stewart and Ben Gazzara (Anatomy of a Murder)
Ben Gazzara and Julianne Moore (The Big Lebowski)
Julianne Moore and Jennifer Lawrence (Mockingjay)

I think that's a bit simpler.

Dudley, you're up, bud.

Channing Tatum to Tatum O'Neal

lol

I always find the cross generational ones the most interesting.

Man, I really thought Channing Tatum to Matthew McConaughey would make connecting Channing to Tatum O'Neal easier. I'm really struggling to find overlap with McConaughey and the previous generations.

Time to bark up a different tree.

FYI, since Bacon numbers are a pretty elementary computer science problem, there's been a site around to compute them for ages. Obviously, using it would be cheating. (I already peeked at the optimal Tatum answer, because I couldn't remember the movies she'd been in. OMG.)

Here's the distribution of bacon numbers of the actors on IMDB (sorry for the poor formatting):

Kevin Bacon Number # of People
0 1
1 3045
2 355179
3 1257575
4 315923
5 26238
6 3105
7 372
8 55
9 9
10 1

In mathematics, there's an Erdos number, simlar to a Bacon number, measured via collaborations in published papers. Some people have both Erdos and Bacon numbers, like Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, Mayim Bialik, Danica McKellar, Natalie Portman, and Brian May.

There's even an Erdos-Bacon-Sabbath number, but they're expanding the definitions of the numbers a bit to any sort of collaboration in the appropriate field.

Tatum O'Neal was in This Is 40. That should makes it easier.

Hooookay, that helps

Tatum O'Neal, Paul Rudd - This is 40
Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen - Knocked Up
Seth Rogen, Channing Tatum - This is the End

Dustin Hoffman and Javier Bardem

Dustin Hoffman was in Hook with Robin Williams.
Robin Williams was in The Birdcage with Gene Hackman.
Gene Hackman was in Enemy of the State with Will Smith.
Will Smith was in MIB with Tommy Lee Jones.
Tommy Lee Jones was in No Country for Old Men with Bardem.

I know that other guy was in Men in Black 3 too, but I can't remember his name (guy from No Country for Old Men)

edit after lookup: Josh Brolin

John C. Riley and John Malkovich.

John C. Riley was in Gangs of New York With Leonardo DiCaprio
DiCaprio was in Man In The Iron Mask with John Malkovich

Mae Whitman and Vivien Leigh

Mae Whitman and Scarlett O'Hara

Scarlett O'hara is a character, not an actor.

I *ALWAYS* make that mistake. Thanks!

And who the hell is Mae Whitman?

Assuming you mean Mae West...

Mae West was in Everyday's a Holiday with Louis Armstrong
Who was the orchestra leader in Hello Dolly with Walter Matthau
Who was in the Odd Couple with Jack Lemon
Who was in Glengarry Glenross with Al Pacino.
Who was in the Godfather with Marlon Brando.
Marlon Brando was in Streetcar Named Desire with Vivian Leigh

That is mighty impressive!

This is Mae Whitman though

Again, I ask, who is she?

She's an actress
