I had an idea for a thread that involves each Goodjer picking one future game they will be purchasing & going on a total media blackout on it. I realize there's people that probably do this as the norm but I gobble up my gaming media like a hungry lion. What are Goodjers tendencies with what you see on games you are looking forward to down the line?
It's easy to see so much of the games we want before they release. With the volume of gaming websites, YouTube videos, Facebook & even apps on your console we have instant access. I remember once upon a time my only way to find out about upcoming games was magazines like Gamesmaster & The Official PlayStation Magazine or even the release board at Electronics Boutique
I seen very little on Bloodborne & enjoyed it all the better for staying away from gameplay videos, it's impact was definitely heightened. The same with Journey, Mark Of The Ninja, Portal 2 & Demons Souls. I want to go with a fairly big title that I'm massively looking forward to, see if I can hold out until it gets played on the day of release.
Ground Rules:
No demos
No videos except teasers (that are non gameplay)
No Previews or Reviews
You turn over or look away if it's advertised on TV/Cinema/Online
I'm gonna go with a game I'm massively looking forward to but is a couple of years away & a huge challenge considering the usual way I go about things:
Final Fantasy VII Remake

I'll get in on this. I'm not going to read or watch anything about Horizon Zero Dawn. So for the only thing I've seen the one E3 trailer, so I'm going in knowing almost nothing. What more could you need other than robot dinosaurs??

I feel like I'm cheating on this one, but Super Mario Maker.

How about at least looking at the Metacritic aggregate right before making the purchase? Or is the risk of getting a dud part of the excitement? (Serious question, because I definitely took that risk back in the day...)
Like, I'm willing to assume that anything from Naughty Dog will be pretty good, so I could do this for Uncharted 4... otherwise, even the best studios and franchises fail sometimes.

I was going to go full blackout on the new Star Wars movie, but they played the newest trailer when I was I an IMAX and I couldn't avert my eyes. And I'm glad I didn't. It was just a teaser trailer, but I'm so much more psyched than I was before.
I've already seen the teaser trailer for Star Wars Battlefront, so that doesn't count.
I will go with Fallout 4. I almost always go on total blackout for anything that I know I'm going to buy on day 1. Fallout 4 easily fits in that category.
If I had a robotic hand like Luke and Vader I could keep playing bass until I passed out.

I think that's fair if it works for you. I don't envision anyone really policing this. What game were you thinking?

Torment here for me. That's probably the only definite one.
I'll do it for Dark Souls 3. I was probably going to try anyways, so this will just be a little extra incentive

Yeah that's definitely fine, you have to make sure the game is good first. It's more about not knowing about the look, feel & mechanics of the game then in theory being surprised & blown away when you play it for the first time.
Like Dyni mentioned this thread is the extra incentive needed to go through with the blackout on the game of your choice.

Until Dawn. I really want to be surprised by it as much as possible, I like the concept, but... it also seems like it might be terrible.
I'm also going to try this with Uncharted 4, which I would like to surprise me with its narrative; but I assume it will be good.

I'm going fully dark on Secret of the Magic Crystals 2. Not gonna be easy, but I love a challenge.
Also Deus Ex: HR. That will actually be tough.
Ditto! It's early enough that all I've seen is an announcement, so I'll go all in on keeping fully dark about DS3.
I was trying to think of another possible upcoming game to do it with but can't think of any releasing within the near future that I haven't already seen video/teaser/preview material for.

I am definitely not the target of this exercise. I basically go full blackout on most gaming purchases once I have made the decision to try a game out.
I don't typically try demos.
I watch very few videos. A lot of them tend to be teasers that feature a bare minimum of gameplay.
I rarely seek out previews and almost never use reviews.
I frequently look away from advertisements for any game I'm interested in.
Something else I do is choosing to not participate in the forums for some games. I sometimes completely miss out on the conversation for that game as I see the comment section build from 10 comments to 1,000 comments over the course of a few days.
With all that said I am eager to see what experiences everyone else has with this. I expect some people to be blindsided by some form of media that breaks the blackout. Others may break the blackout themselves and either confirm their previously held ideas.
Just to throw this out I am pretty much on blackout on these games currently.

Without a current console (I have a Wii and PS3) and having a good enough PC (not amazing, but I've been able to play what I want) this is a risky proposition. I like it a lot and am going to think about it. I'm also not a day one kinda guy (I like a good deal) so this very much goes against my grain.
Going to think about a good game. Toying with FallOut 4 though I don't know why I'm so excited. I didn't love FO 3, I found it tedious though I enjoyed little moments throughout my playtime with it.
Considering No Man Sky on PC. I fear it's going to be a Spore. All the potential of the universe without any interesting verbs to actually experience the potential of creativity. Still, if the game is going to be good it seems it would be best experienced from the first week- sort of the gaming equivalent of seeing a film in the theater.

I consume little gaming media - I read GWJ and RPS, listen to Three Moves Ahead and very occasionally Idle Thumbs, and that's about it. I don't stay up very closely with what is coming out and when, I'd rather play what I have than worry about what is coming.
However, if I am made aware of a game being released, I will find out enough about it to know if I want to get it or not and whether I want to get it close to release or later on. Once I have decided to get a game, I don't purposefully seek out more information about it; I have already made my decision. On the other hand, if something crosses my path about it, I don't care. So I guess maybe that is a sort of blackout. Except I don't think of it that way - it is more me being lazy and not going out of my way to reinforce a decision I have already made about a game. Part of being lazy is not dodging incoming information that accidentally comes my way about a game. I just don't worry about stuff like that.
Should be a cakewalk for me, I typically go on full blackout once I'm sold on a game. I'll be doing so for Torment: Tides of Numenera (I don't even read the backer emails, I just complain that they should spend time on the game instead of writing those ), and Dishonored 2.
And maybe Mass Effect: Andromeda, but that's still a long way out.
I am staying completely in the dark on Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
I'm waiting the 2 years to get my steam key for kickstarting it and that it. All I know about it are the kickstarter goals. It's going to be a long wait.

I'll second this to the letter. Also: Sword Coast Legends, Satellite Reign and Shadowrun: Hong Kong.
Edit: Apparently I'm going dark on the letter S.
