'Sesame Street' losing 'Maria' after 45 years
The block is losing one of its most beloved citizens: Sonia Manzano, who has played shop owner Maria on the PBS series for almost 45 years, has announced that she is retiring. The 65-year-old Puerto Rican actress revealed her plan to exit the show at the recent American Library Association Annual Conference in San Francisco.
As someone whos longest job has been 7 years I am just kind of in awe of someone working at the same place for over 40 years!
If she owned the shop then she's to blame for Cookie Monster's sickness. Cookies are not a "sometimes food" when you're the GOD-DAMNED COOKIE MONSTER.
More seriously though, I wish her the best.
NOTE: Not a doodle bug.
Maria was always my favorite. I hope she has a happy retirement. Another cool thing: she announces her retirement at a conference for librarians!

I honestly did not even realize she was still alive, let alone still on the show.

Sad news. I remember watching her when I was young and now my daughter watches her. What an unbelievable run that show has had. Nothing really like it and the writing is always clever.
Ah, Christmas Eve on Sesame Street -- my family watches that every year on Chistmas Eve. One of the few, never-dying traditions.
I had no idea Maria was still on Sesame Street, but wishing her all the best!
Can't get the youtube clip to embed right, but here's a bit of Maria and David from Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (1978).
