I can't say I'm truly sad at hearing that Sir Nicholas Winton died yesterday at the age of 106, we should all be so lucky as to have such a long and productive life. I am sad for those of us left behind that have lost yet another example of the very best humanity has to offer.
If you don't know Sir Winton's story, find the time to follow the links and read about him. Shortly before the outset of World War II he traveled to Czechoslovakia on a mission that eventually resulted in 669 children (mostly Jewish) being rescued from almost certain death at the hands of the Nazis. At the time of his death yesterday it was estimated that those children and their descendants numbered nearly 16,000, all of them owing their lives to the actions of a man who took a two week vacation to go to Prague to see what he could do to help.
I spent several years living in a building named for this man. No complaints, sir. No complaints.
NOTE: Not a doodle bug.
I read earlier today about this man. Most of the children he saved were orphans by the end of the war.
