It is a period of time that seems to take at least 20 minutes or so, only to die without an option to save. I knocked the difficulty down and have made it further in.
The map is kind of frustrating and I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but I wasn't expecting such a dreary, grey-brown open world game. I have passed the amusement park section and am going about doing odds and ends it seems.
Stick with it! It starts out a little slow once you get through the opening...
I shall. I am liking it well enough and feel like I just need to push through. I didn't mean to give the impression that I really disliked it. I am just at an in-between part where I am still waiting for the game to click with me.
The music, of all things, is what made me fall in love with that game - at least through ending A. Other stuff happens later that kept me super-compelled to finish.
I decided to play this game after i did the FFXIV crossover raids....
Such a good game... i am like 20 hours in!
I think I found the post-desert odds and ends section a bit tedious since the movement felt slow. Might be true for the post amusement park section, too. Once I got a little further in and got better movement chips (like the dash going faster or farther) plus the ability to fast travel, the in-between parts got shorter and shorter, and let me do more of the actual game part. And man, it was worth it.
Nier Automata's Switch port might actually be the best place to play the 2017 game
If you weren't aware, critics praise Automata partly because this new Nintendo Switch port runs better than the console versions at launch in 2017. Over five years ago, PlatinumGames's title was bereft with frame rate drops and other technical issues, which means the new Switch port might well be one of the best places to play Nier Automata.
A game runs best on the Switch!? Miracles never cease.

That's a hard pill to swallow. The game may have launched that way, but from what I've seen of comparisons, it hits up to 60fps on PS4 now instead a usually steady 30 on Switch. Maybe combat framerate is a bit wonky on PS4. Switch also has lower res textures and simplified world geometry, Look at the scene starting at 3:20. It goes from typical video game ugly, to 2 generations ago ugly on Switch.

It may be impressive that they managed to make it work, and I want it to be great since I only recently got a chance to try the game and have been waiting for the right time to pick it up, and love the Switch as my only console, but am under no impression that it's going to stand up alongside other versions. I'm still waiting for a sale on PC, which hasn't happened since I realized I wanted to play the game back in March or April.
Digital Foundry’s take.
Finally picked this up via the Steam Spring Sale, being the first time it's been on sale on PC in a full year. Played up until the end of the first desert mission. Looking forward to seeing where this game goes, and I'm going in with the knowledge I'll be playing through multiple times, so I'm not going to linger anywhere and grind for long while exploring to keep from feeling like things are overstaying their welcome.
Finished ending A last night. Promptly ran in the wrong direction and got ending G, restarted and got to the Bunker for route B.
I ended A thinking I wanted more of the flying sections. The start of B did not disappoint. I have a feeling it will not keep up, though.
As context, I first played this game and immediately thought it felt like a modern The Guardian Legend, from the NES. TGL started with a shmup style section before changing to an on foot exploration style hub area that connected other 'corridors' (as they were called) of shmup areas.
The one thing I wish they had done in Nier was integrate more time in the flight units, maybe even as access or introduction to new areas or something. The first run just felt like they were too few and far between. I do like that they changed the main city area part way through, though. That was a great change to an area I was just getting bored with.
Will I need to be looking at a guide to get the rest of the good endings after this one? Anything I should know before going forward?
No need to look at a guide. After ending B, the story continues, so you won’t be replaying the same section of story again and again. Once you’ve gotten up to ending E, you’re done (assuming you don’t want to chase the other endings as well).
And the other endings are mostly jokes.
I noticed that when I stumbled upon G and it rolled credits in about half a second. I saw that one of them was simply removing the os chip, so I'll probably at the very least grab some low hanging fruit like that just for fun. Whether I go all-in for the achievement (assuming that's a thing) depends on how I'm feeling after the real endings, I guess.

It most definitely is a cheevo/trophy. The good thing is, if you get tired of scavenging for those joke endings, you can literally purchase them, iirc.
lol, really!?
Nice. Now, I'm definitely unlocking all the trophies, and not spending any more time fishing along the way. Gamesave Manager will make this pretty easy, too.
Accidentally stumbled too far forward into ending B last night at 42 hours. Looking forward to shorter runs, but also moping up side quests that were left open. I'm really hoping they develop some things more, but imagine I'll be left wanting by the end. I'd like to see even a tiny thing like the "nine-ess" vs "nines" thing go somewhere other than one random slip of the tongue about 85% of the way through the game. Why do they address emotion from the androids and only talk it down a few times, and acknowledge it exists there, but never face it even though it feels like the game really wants to?
I could also still do with a ton more flying unit segments.
Also, that hacking music is reminiscent of The Guardian Legend and I love it and it drives me nuts all at the same time since you only hear about 5-15 seconds at a time. I really want to go replay that game now.
Lol. I just got into the next part and one complaint was paid off...
Nines. Go figure it would be the thing I called out.
Can't wait to see how they wrap up the rest of this.
Good to hear! I've been waiting for it all to be out since the production seems to be troubled. I thought I read that it was going to differ from the games but maybe that's in cour 2?
In other news, I got a ticket to see the Nier concert in Los Angeles in January. Really regretted not seeing it last time they had one and it'll be a good excuse to go visit family in the area.
I let this one sit on my PlayStation pile way too long. Beat all normal endings and working through final side quests & cheevos. I'll try for platinum, I usually don't care but this game ranked up in top games for me. This whole thread has been great to read through for everyone's impression.
I look forward to hitting up Nier Replicant in the future.
So DLC and the lvl 99 quest left. Level 70 now, suggestions for power leveling beyond XP chips and either main game or endless fight zone in the desert?
I will equip that and also trophy hunt with the few remaining ones to clear out what I can. Weapon upgrading is gonna be a pain.
This is somewhat spoilery depending on where you are, but are you aware that
all achievements can be bought with in-game currency, depending on the final ending you choose?
