Hurray! A followup to NieR has been announced. Here's what we know:
Director: Yoko Taro
Composer Keiichi Okabe
Square Enix is publishing and the studio will be some sort of combination of Platinum Games and Access Games (?)
The song used initially has a melody reminiscent of Ashes of Dreams, especially when it gets to 1:14 in the trailer. I suppose that doesn't mean too much. Then, at 1:24, right when the girl is revealed, it has a melody very reminiscent of Yonah's theme (Check here at 0:14). So, I think it's probably just Yonah as you would expect. I had initially wondered if it might be a young Grandma or just a new character. So, NieR ending spoilers:
If they go with a cannon ending D, NieR Gestalt has been erased from the universe to save Kaine and Yonah grows up with Kaine. That would make sense given the sword she's using. Kaine would have taught her how to fight.
I'm excited!
OMG...! F'ing YES!!!!!!!!!!!
Soooo can't wait for this.
Between this and discussing Drakengard 3 in sock puppet form, I highly imagine this guy doesn't like being seen and is a single nervous breakdown away from becoming a hikikomori (extreme shut-in).
I think it makes him adorable.
So psyched for this. Don't be surprised if it's my #1 GotY pick for 2016, whether it is deserved or not.
I would really love to do a Nier replay.

Done.
OMG...! F'ing YES!!!!!!!!!!!
Very much this!

When that came up in the announcement trailer, I almost texted Minarchist with a giant squee of excitement.
I still pull up the Nier soundtrack to listen to while I do other things. It's easily one of my favorite game soundtracks ever.
Between this and The Last Guardian...
Not sure what's more unexpected, this or the FFVII remake.
Anyone know if Ubisoft is doing any E3 stuff? If they announce anything for Beyond Good and Evil, I think I may have an E3 bingo card to fill up...

Ubisoft's was on Monday, and people were immediately crying at the absence of Beyond Good and Evil. Some time today I expect a media outlet to have a headline of "Ubisoft talks blah, blah, and why there's no Beyond Good and Evil 2 at this year's E3".

"You'll totally believe what Ubisoft didn't announce at E3!"
On a more pertinent note: does this series require any knowledge of Drakengard? If so, what's a good jumping on point? If not, what's the gameplay like? I've heard it's janky but worth it for the story, but that doesn't tell me much.

NieR needs to be experienced. It takes 1.5 playthroughs to get the 'full' story. I found the combat neither janky, or 'wrong', but you are right, you play this game for the story, and...
Well, I'll leave it at that. The less you know going in, the better, and for someone who NEVER finishes a game, I played through this to get endings A, B, C and the final ending D.
I love this game, and I hope that the sequel/prequel/whatever does the memory of that game proud.

To piggyback on what m0nk3yboy said, no previous knowledge of Drakengard is required (I hadn't played any of the games previously), although I understand that there are some connections. However those connections are more for fans of the series than having an actual effect on the plot of Nier.
The combat for the game is pretty basic--mash a button without too much thought. Maybe dodge an attack or two, but otherwise it's not overly difficult (from what I remember). Depending on how deep you want to go with the different endings, you can end up doing some pretty repetitive things in order to build up enough cash/materials to unlock weapons.
Also keep in mind your first playthrough will be the longest. Each subsequent new game starts you about halfway through the story and can be wrapped up in a few hours.
The combat is about on par with Kingdom Hearts. Similar amount of button mashing. Similarly weird bounciness.
And the connection between Nier and Drakengard is essentially that the weirdest, most super obscure ending to Drakengard 2 is the never-mentioned background event that kicks off Nier. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Wonder if the New Game+ will be more like Drakengard 3? Which I have no clue how that ties into everything either, but it is certainly written in a manner that it stands alone, just as Nier had.
10% complete eh? Sounds like a possible 2017 release, though I feel like these percentages are a tad silly a barometer.
That explains the gardening mini game, too.

And why I keep finding goddamned bells in my trees.
I'm excited!
Me too!

OMG
"The way I look at original Nier, it's like your mom's home cooking. It may not be great, but it's OK. You're comfortable with it," Taro said. In a less appetizing metaphor, he likened Nier to a puppy someone threw away. It's flawed, but people still love it.
Just confirmed that I still have my copy of Nier, which I've never gotten around to playing, but always meant to. Maybe I'll use it as an interlude after I finish Dragon Age: Inquisition, but before I start my Witcher 1-3 playthrough.
Nier isn't, like, super long, right? Even with the apparently-required multiple playthroughs?
