Master of Orion, one of the most influential series to the strategy genre, is being revamped for a modern audience by Wargaming and NGD Studios. The original game is an influential flagship title for the 4X genre and developer NGD Studios is keeping it familiar, as multiple members from the team behind the original Master of Orion are involved with the reboot.

Wargaming also touts this as a homecoming of sorts, as the company found success with its Massive Assault series. “Master of Orion is a game that brings Wargaming truly back to its roots, not only as a company but also in how it influenced my personal interest in both games and making them,” CEO of Wargaming Victor Kislyi says. “The series’ iconic gameplay has stood the test of time and working with NGD Studios to bring the series back to life is a truly exciting moment for the team.”

I never played the original, but this looks great. Will definitely be keeping an eye on it.

Hate to be the stick in the mud, but hasn't nearly every space 4x game tried to be a reboot of MOO2? Why can't the genre move forward towards something more innovative; I would be happier for a more streamlined Distant Worlds or a Paradox Space EU4 / Vicki 2.

Sigh

Who?

Wargaming must have dropped some fat cash to get ahold of that IP. And this developer is kind of a nobody. That aside if they really do have members of the original crew things might work out ok. As long as they deliver MoO HD and don't try to mess with the formula.

If anyone experiences an earthquake in a couple of hours, it will be from the force of Veloxi's SQUEEEE as he wakes up and sees this news.

I played the second one and was always terrible at it. But I still loved it. So depending on how this goes, it might be the first 4x I've played since.... well... Master of Orion 2.

Buy MOO2 from GOG now and play it. Now.

I'm yet to see anything that's come close to getting what made MOO2 so good. Sword of the Stars got the rock-paper-scissors tech war right but forgot to hook in the development game. I'm happy to see people take another swing.

wargaming was the distributor for MoO3 so... not so confident, but maybe that was all quicksilver's fault.

Yuuuuuuuuup, mostly they have been trying to our Moo MOO.

Watch this end up a mobile title just to screw with everyone. lol

Why is the first one not available on tablets yet? That interface was perfect for a touch screen.

If you keep on swinging to make "the next MOO2" then you can only get as good as MOO2. Just play MOO2 then (and as you said it is still available). The trailer shows nothing except that they are bringing in nostalgia - so maybe it is just marketing and they are going to try and create an entirely new and better game.

Meh.

Yeah, I'm right there with you, guys. I'm not all that interested in a game trying to be MOO2 Remastered HD. There are plenty of those type of games out there, I'm not looking for another swing.

That being said, since we know nothing about the actual game aside from the MOO name, I'll still keep an eye on this one in the hopes it tries to do something different with the formula. However, my reaction to this announcement was pretty lukewarm. Not completely writing it off, but also not all that hyped up for it.

I wish they would make an actual MOO/MOO2 Remastered HD. That would be great.

Oh man, when even Veloxi is bitter we know something is up.

Watch this be targeted at mobile also. Can't wait for the Steam reviews!

So I can colonize this planet in 10 hours or pay $2 to have it done now! YAY!

Yeah, I'm very hesitant to get my hopes up on this one.

PS. I doubt it'll even come close to besting Distant Worlds.

It's no Endless Space, but I guess I'll try it.

On a side note, I am interested but actually not excited. Although MOO2 remains my all time favorite 4x space game, I'm still recovering from MOO3 (never happened, nope, nuh uh). Also there's been a bunch of games that have been letdowns since, and then there are those few that did a "good enough" job of recapturing the old magic. I'm hopeful but cautious about this remake. The music in that trailer was godawful and I hope that's not a sign of the overall quality to expect from the title.

Endless Space is a Ludo redskin.

I think it's pretty much guaranteed to be better than the non-existent MOO3, which I played for way too long.

Well, unless they also try to make this an overly ambitious galaxy simulator and switch core development concepts midway through development. Or release a version where major systems (like stealth or diplomacy) don't work because they're so complex people just assumed they were functional until the players did extensive testing.

Sorry, MOO, we used up all our enthusiasm last week with XCOM 2 and Fallout 4.

This is great news! I love filling out tax forms!

This is good news, but I wish Ascendancy would get a reboot. It was wildly creative, but the AI stunk.

Logic Factory talked about making a second Ascendancy, but have since gone completely dark. Nothing on their FB page for 6 months, the works.

There WAS an AI patch for it back in the day, but that basically only made it suck a bit less. I too love the f*ck out of Ascendancy, and still listen to the soundtrack regularly. As much as I loved Ascendancy, I had a hell of a time wrapping my head around their follow up (and apparently only other game), The Tone Rebellion.

So...is this a Kickstarter or are they just making the thing?

Hhmm.

*tags for future followup*

Just, not getting hopes up. X-Com, MoO2, Sacrifice, Tribes, the 4 truly great games of my life. Seen remakes of two of them so far, not been impressed. So, not getting hopes up.

Would be happy to buy a remastered MoO2, pretty graphics, updated UI, same gameplay. But they never can just do what was done right before on these reboots, they have to 'improve' things...

Should go reinstall and run through Sacrifice again, been a few years.

Never played MoO(1), L.O.V.E.D. MoO2, never touched "the MoO that shall not be named".

"Six month rule" will apply to this new one. Not getting too revved up, as those "muscles" have probably atrophied.
