ARK: Survival Evolved - Catch All

Someone posted a picture of the new stone gate on reddit. Damn it looks nice.

So we are starting to overflow with Dinosaurs, I think it is time for WEM to start building a larger complex with pens for individual dino types. I also tamed some Dodos this morning which I believe will lay eggs now that we have male and female dodos.

I have one dodo, female, it lays eggs. Don't need both genders, maybe that will happen when they introduce breeding. Supposedly, only the females will lay eggs, they claimed to have fixed that recently. After the fix, one of my male parasaurs laid an egg, go figure.

More pens wouldn't be a bad thing. They will need ceilings, we had several argentavis attacks in a row, they flew into the barn (maybe going for the pteranodons) and got smashed by the stegos. I intend to add further enclosure to the barn to cut down on this (we do need to leave enough openings to let the pteranodon riders access). I'd also recommend keeping a trike or stego in each pen for security.

I don't know about pens by type, there are already a lot of types so that would be a lot of pens. But additional pens would be good, I tossed together one last night in an attempt to restore some order to the clutter, couldn't move for all the dinos randomly parked out front. A pen for the dodos would be good, I've seen one with ramps inside and the dodos moved onto the ramps, so the eggs and dung rolled down to a collection point.

Currently the mammoths, rex, bronto and sarcos can't go through the dino gate. So any attempt to pen them would have to be gateless.

And finally, Yonder has been wanting to set up a second base, inland, for better access to resources we really don't have on/near the beach. That will help with the dino clutter, temporarily.

Oh, btw Yonder, there are two crocs tamed for you, they were near the main base so it was tame them or kill them. Tried leaving them for someone else to tame, but they kept roving closer the base, so it wasn't really feasible.

I had my herd stashed in the main pen overnight, but I'm planning on building my own little hovel off to the side. Getting them out this morning did remind me of the last time I had to use a parking lot in New York.

Actually despite the fact that it clearly shouldn't fit the Rex will go through a dino gate just fine. I'm sure that will be patched eventually, but in the meanwhile it's quite handy.

Alas I lost my parasaur Booger today. Knocked off a cliff for the sharks to get too, stupid carno. I have replaced him with Booger Jr.

Also I have almost enough Keratin for a ptero saddle. I only need about 9 more. Huzzah.

Oh whilst trying to save Booger I found the northwest cave, it was actually right where I had fell the day before. So if folks want to gear up and go after some chitin I can lead you there. Unfortunately there are some nasty bat creatures in there, killed me before I could leave, losing over 40 chitin in the process.

Just gotta say that while I know a lot of people are turned off by PVP due to early game griefing and the stress of losing everything but there are just the some of the best, more hilarious/entertaining experiences that comes from it.

Server has been patched to v183.0 enjoy your dinosaurs and fireworks!

Patch notes since last update:

Current Version: v183
Unversioned Hotfix:
* Fixed a server-side crash

* Fixed case of clients unable to spawn in the online game / getting booted. Temporary solution before v183 until this new version is to TOTALLY delete your game directory and redownload the game (the issue is due to having some extra old map files in your Maps dir that need to be cleared out). v183 will ignore these however. Mega props to Steam User "crua9" for helping us to track this down!
* Fixed some collision gaps in stone tier (dinos could hit thru them, etc)
* Fixed a case where you could unprone into people's bases.
* Added "Independence Fireworks" Skin for Flare Gun. Find it dropped from a variety of high-level dinos, and skin your Flares with this, to light up the night sky with a blazing fireworks display. Will only drop this weekend, so better stock up!
* New Primitive-Only Official Servers! Only stuff available that you might actually find in caveman-era tech, for role-playing fun. PvP, PvE, and PvP Hardcore in North America, EU, and OC. If players like this and the servers get crowded, we can add more
Server Admins can now explicitly remove items from the Supply Crate drops, to facilitate these primitive servers (a little later will expose the full loot tables for editing)
We'll be providing the INI's used to setup these servers so that players can easily host their own Primitive-Era servers as they may wish.
* Emote Wheel! 10 emotes for now Male and Female, along with two Emote Hotkey bindings.
* Mod makers can now override the minimap and spawn regions
* Fixed Ichthyosaurus losing taming affinity too fast and not being feedable quickly enough
* Fixed issue where swimming dinos were attempting to beach themselves to eat corpses
* Made dinos able to properly damage structures again, in many cases a trace check was failing causing them to not do damage
* Dinos can no longer push you through structures
* Made high level supply crates more likely to give high-level items
* Improved server perf Phase 1
* Hopeful fix for dinos appearing through floors when re-entering a zone or reloading a server
* Added key for "Proximity Text Chat", to say something in text chat only within a short audible range (has a unique text chat color)
* Improved visual look/materials of Stone Structures
* Likely fix for case where Tribe data could be lost when reloading a server
* Fixed a case where "Take All From Inventory" could lose items if it would make your own Inventory greater than 2x overweight. Now it'll stop if it reaches that.

182.1
* Fixed Stone wall collisions/height protruding through bases
* Added Missing Stone tier icons
* Limited overdamage (overharvest) of resources to 5x the total resource health, to avoid server lag giving hundreds of berries in one hit on a plant.
* Increased resolution in stone tier textures
* Stone dino gate is now colorizable

PvP, meh, been there, done that. While I haven't done PvP in ARK, its sounds exactly like your average open world pvp, i.e., ganking. With the added benefit of PvO (Player VS Offline Player) - i.e. your attacker picks a time suited to gathering his team, and hitting your base while you are asleep/at work/offline and can't muster a defense. I honestly don't understand the appeal in PvO for either side.

Logging into the Starmade server I was playing on and finding the Docking Hub Space Port destroyed while I was asleep (I had built it for the entire server population to use), well, that was enough PvO for me for a lifetime. People are broke.

Even a server with restricted base assault times means if you aren't online during those times, what you built goes away.

The gamers with jobs group on the PVP server is starting/hopefully finishing a War Sunday night. We have more Dino's equipment then we have people. So if anyone from the PvE server wants to just for a night try PvP or try attacking people we cold easily supply you with some stuff. We would prefer people that at least have a decent knowledge of the game though.

Few things to note

Things starting around 8 p.m. EST Sunday night will probably take a few hours

1 - Will know today but probably only have stuff for a few people
2 - You will be low level but we will put you on Dino's so it will not matter to much
3 - Do not worry about losing our stufff, on this attack we are either going to win or probably be soon there after be wiped off the map.
4 - Do note we play on a high pop server so lag, rubber-banding will be much worse than normal on the GWJ server.

Yeah, I'm tempted to try the PvP sometimes, but I don't like that it's all or nothing. Sometimes I just want to relax and build.

That is what I mean, try it for one night. You would get some of our stuff, and could just go back to the other server after.

I'm jumping in the pool. I'd be interested in joining the GWJ server... Currently downloading and will get my bearings first.

Had a mammoth either glitch, or drown, or both. Megapiranas spawned in the ichthys pool, nearby crocs rushed in and ate them. Friar Tuck was close enough to agro as well, and walked into the middle of the pool while the crocs left. I was busy dividing the meat the crocs gained by eating the piranas when I got the message that the mammoth had died. It didn't say what killed him, the body was untouched but slumped over in what I assume was the normal death pose. I was able to loot the body, and save the saddle. So, going to need to make sure the mammoths are parked far enough from the ichthys pool. Maybe we should drop a pillar in the middle of the pool to override the spawn, and keep the pirana from being a further nuisance.

I tamed a turtle.

I think part of Ark is about loss. It's supposed to be a struggle and there really isn't any real threat or penalty if not for other players. I guess what I like about PVP the most is it forces you to interact with your server population on a political level, form alliances, make enemies, and tribe together for a reason (like safety). There's a whole level of game mechanics that just don't exist in a PVE world. PVE is mostly just a building and taming simulator.

Make sure you bring stimulant and tranc arrows. Tranc them so they can't respawn and use the stim powder to prevent getting tranced. Especially with higher level armor, sometimes it's easier to tranc than kill. Get em down, destroy everything, then steal what you want and kill them. You can also tranc their dinos, and even riders on dinos. You can put your dinos on neutral or attack target and dismount and fire away. Have a few sleeping bags placed in the rear of your attack so if one or two go down they can respawn. Obviously if they wipe you out its a lost cause, but reinforcements can keep a battle going. Classic raid tactics.

I almost forgot - explosives help a lot.

I've been worried about the Ichthy pool. I think we need to station turtles and crocs in the pool itself. What I was going to try, but sadly didn't in time, was to put my turtle in the pool in passive (it has tons of hp), with my new crocs (thanks warhound!) Set to aggressive and follow following it. Theoretically that would lead to the crocs instantly attaching any Corel it pans that spawned in the pond, but the file command would always bring them back if they happened to sprint off after a hippo or something.

So I have stationed Torterra in the pool with my Croc's set to Aggressive and following, so please be careful with using U near the pool, if they break follow who knows where they'll end up. Since they are following they won't eat what they kill, but the dolphins in the pool will.

I figure we can check out how much food the dolphins are collecting with this setup before deciding if it's worth the trouble. If it's lucrative then the best thing would probably be to move the big guys that aren't in a pen (The Bronto, Mammoth, and Rex) out behind the house so they are safe from running in to the water.

If the Dolphins don't start accruing a bunch of meat it'll probably be best to bridge and build in the pool to block spawns.

The other issue with our home base is that the new farm expansion has far outstripped our fertilizer production. All but one of the new medium plots, and all of the new small plots have died off. I suspect that this is partially due to this 182 change:

* Crop plot yields increased 50% and max # of crop items on them increased by 300%

Which I suspect also increased fertilizer requirements by 50%. Honestly, with the 300% increased max crop I don't think we'll need to spam as many farm plots as we were starting to. Even with just the current three small Narco plots that means there are 900 narco berries just waiting for you when you log in.

Anyone that doesn't mind tossing some poop in the compost bins when you are on, that would be great! (no pressure, I understand dino poop management isn't what many people want to do) I think what I'll do is build a large storage box next to the compost bins. That box will just be for Thatch and fertilizer, that way anyone that wants to help out but finds that the compost bin is full of fertilizer can easily put overflow fertilizer in that instead of searching for a crop that needs fertilizer the most.

Once we get a bit of a surplus again we can start reopening the medium plots until we have one of each medium crop we need.

Tried an expedition inland to found a second base on Sunday morning. Things were going great, the team of dinos was taking out any aggressive beasts we ran into. Got pretty close to where I was hoping to set up and night fell. Hunkered down by a rock and tabbed out to check my map. About a minute later, tab back in and am freezing to death. No problem, I have a campfire on one of the pack mules, lets set that up and be all good. This is when I learned that the campfire doesn't generate enough heat when you are freezing...

That was a pretty big hit of loss. Going to take a while to rebuild back up.

What's your Fortitude? My high-ish altitude survive-ability is WAY higher now that I have 10 Fortitude instead of 4.

Been putting into Stamina (200) and into some melee strength so far. Kinda been following a bit of a stat guide I found. Thats good info on the fortitude though, thats where my next points are going.

You should be able to run back and find everything? Or was it too dangerous getting there and you don't want to run naked?

Also, I like buttons too

Put down a campfire and a standing torch, hunker right next to them, and hold a torch.

I tried a few times, but it was really far, killed alot of stuff to get there, and it murders me when trying to get back.

Fortitude 20, and I still run into spots up in the mountains at night where two fire sources won't stop the freezing, it gets cold up there. If you can throw up a quick thatch hut, it will help fend off the temperature problems a lot. Of course that means you have to have the time to scrounge the parts needed... I like to carry 200 thatch and fiber when roaming around, then I just need to chop down a tree or three to get the wood needed for a hut.

To handle the times when I can't get out of the heat/cold, I carry blood packs. Good for what ails ya, last time I got stuck out in the wild dying from the heat I just kept using blood packs to heal through the heat damage.

Might consider bringing a hide sleeping bag along on trips like that. Hindsight is great, right?

I didn't think that rex would chase me into a rocky dead-end, nearly lost my team of sabertooths to that today. Managed to make the corpse run back in time to see a second t-rex try to eat the sabers, then one carno followed shortly by another tried to eat me as I was trying to get my armor on. But, hey, if I die and the cats live, even if I lose the gear on the body, I would consider it a win.

Yonder, plan on keeping that ptera saddle I lent you, I found one in a purple supply drop today. Also replaced that level 8 ptera I lost yesterday with a level 18, so I'm good.

This game looks fantastic, I'm going to get it/install it tonight. Would it be possible to get access to the GWJ server? I'd love to play in the same world with everyone.
