I recreated myself for WotC.
I think reapers are my favorite of the new classes. Built right they can be an absolute monster in stealth. Not to mention near perfect scouts. I imagine a whole squad of them decently leveled up would be bit broken in stealth levels. They also seem to be damn good snipers to boot.
Also I found the skirmisher to be great when you need to use a skulljack. Makes it a lot safer. While the Templar feels like a ranger, but better. Also they got the whole jedi/space mage thing going on.
The chosen are a real pain though. They seem built to fight you indirectly or with surprising ways. You can't really just wait for them to walk into your crossfire. Also seems like the lost ignores them. In fact it seems like the lost have a certain prefer xcom over the enemy. Not certain but feels like it.
Overall having a blast.
Tali Zorah Vas Normandy for WotC Expansion is live!!
Double post for Glorious Garrus Vakarian sexiness now live!
I'm curious, Tkyl. Just how many Star Trek: TNG actors did you get to voice these new characters? Because as near as I can tell, Riker is the #1 Reaper and Deanna Troi is making her feelings known about the Advent one bullet at a time. And who gave Worf a grappling hook? Tell me he gets a bat'leth at some point.
What I'm trying to say is, I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!
I think tasha yar is in there too somewhere? I think I read that somewhere.
Yep, IMDb confirms it. Also John de lance and Dwight Shultz too! It's a regular cast reunion.
I beat the Assassin properly last night. Even though I'm playing on the easiest skill setting (I like winning! sue me!) it was really rather satisfying, especially since I basically turned her into my "main" character's personal nemesis throughout the game. (I think pretty much every 'killing' blow on the assassin throughout the various missions where she popped up was performed by her - right up to the final killing blow in that last confrontation). Nice.
Although it has left here with a negative trait of being afraid of the other two surviving special baddies, which seems very unfair! Boo!
Anyway, one down - two to go!
...plus I got a shiny new unique katana and gun combo for my troubles.
* On that note also : I quite like how the "enemy" now has much more of a presence in the game -both in cut-scenes showing how they are reacting to you slowly chip away at their plans, and in stuff like the propaganda messages after successful missions, etc. I think it'll help make finally cornering and dealing with those pesky etherials a good deal more satisfying in the end.
** Jeez, i forgot how "one more turn-ey" this game is. I only meant to boot it up for a quick mission or two earlier. ....3 hours later :O
I spent way more time than I actually had to spare in it yesterday. I find that I'm very aligned with the RPS review in that I don't, in theory, like the idea of turning XCOM into what is essentially a game full of goofy-looking superheros, but damn does it work out great in practice. The bondmates, some of the little touches like maladies that make the infirmary more important, the side operations to give you more ways to use your troops, and the way the new opposing unit shake up the game are all aces. There's a crazy amount of good game design in this.
It's pretty insane to me how something as 'simple' as a propaganda poster generator makes me more invested in my characters than anything else. Lost my first soldier who was up to LT, that remembrance poster...whew it got me.
Also seems like the lost ignores them. In fact it seems like the lost have a certain prefer xcom over the enemy. Not certain but feels like it.
i just did a mission where a chosen, 2 lost swarms, and an advent group we're all in the mix. the lost did attack both the chosen and advent as well as my guys. when they started to intersect i lobbed a couple grenades over near the chosen to bait the lost that way, it seemed to work.
If you are using OSX don't buy War of the Chosen on Steam yet, as it doesn't work. Although the Apple symbol is attached to the steam page of WotC, there is no way to start it. This is totally infuriating... it costs 39.90€, which means that it is a full price game... it would have been nice if they put up a disclaimer or something like that... What a waste of time. This is the second time that I've ever requested a refund.
EDIT: It works now.
I've noticed two types of mods coming into the workshop. The first is a new version for the WotC of an existing mod. The other is a Legacy version of the mod, and the original updates to WotC.
Kexx I know you do a lot of modding, I assume there needs to be two versions, for both versions of the game? Is it easier to make a new mod for WotC or update the old?

Most mods probably just need to be recompiled with the new SDK, which isn't hard at all. Unfortunately this means that each mod is either "compatible" with one version of the game or the other. The simplest of mods might work with both, but there is no guarantee that a mod compiled with the other SDK won't cause problems with the version it isn't compatible with.
So i definitely feel like it's been getting buggier as I play - especially with the Chosen involved in the mix. Couple of examples...
Got stuck in overwatch here as the chosen teleported into the map, and had to ultimately load the last autosave to get out of it.
Here, I clicked to fire, again just as a chosen was spawning, and got stuck in the Reaper sniper-vision until it was her next turn.
But my favourite...
We meet again, Wholename Mixedcase...or should I say....REALLYLONGNICKNAME!
On top of that there's a fair few animation glitches (missing an overwatch shot by firing directy UP into the air, throwing a grenade with my back to the enemy, that sort of thing). I forget how much of this was in the original version though, so some of that may well be carried across.
None of it particularly game breaking (although I HAVE had one mission that kept crashing to desktop for me everytime I tried to load it, but whatever the problem was it seemed to sort itself out).
I had a squad member captured a while ago and haven't been able to retrieve them or get information on them. Is there something I have to do or is it only a chance of getting them back?
My biggest gripe is the Lost almost completely ignore the Advent/Alien forces. I literally cannot count the number of times lost have just wandered by active pods of aliens to get to my guys, and I'm super careful not to use grenades except as a last resort on those maps.
In the "aw, come on!" category, I had a mission with three priests and 18+ sectoids. My poor group of squaddie/corporals didn't do great, but we managed a win. Every time a new pod was activated, I was just amazed it was more sectoids. Also had several swarms of lost on that one, but at least a few of them paid some attention to the aliens.
It was probably a sitrep which focussed on the psychic enemies. I've had one of those and it was nothing but Priests and Sectoids.
So if I never finished Xcom 2 should I jump in with the expansion? Or should I finish up my old campaign. I like a lot of what I'm seeing with the new factions and capture system.
You know what's XCOM baby? Losing all my highest ranked soldiers and half my rookies over five missions. I know Ironman is hard, but come on. Most of those deaths were just extraordinary bad luck. Usually, my last turn trips one to two groups who then unload on my guys. Frustrating. Also, what's the word on character pools from vanilla working on WotC as long as they're not mods?
he mission introducing The Fallen was a blast. Killing 'em never got old. That was followed by a traditional retaliation mission, then I got to save a captured soldier without any bloodshed. That was a nice variety.
My biggest gripe is the Lost almost completely ignore the Advent/Alien forces.
Hmm, I recall spotting a relevant Steam workshop item for that when I grabbed smooth UI menu scrolling.. think it claimed the base value is ~ 70% that they go after you. Supposedly the mod splits this to 50/50. Actually, found again, here it is: WOTC Fair Lost targetting

You have to start a new campaign for the expansion anyway so if you're feeling like you want more X-Com then I'd say go for it?
To be honest, I like the fact that the lost target me. In the recent resistance missions, I've had the local militia take out several targets before I could even get near them. Their accuracy is better than my Xcom squad!
Just beat one of the chosen. It was a hell of a slog and really close fight. Do not go into that fight under powered. Skin of my teeth getting by. That said otherwise I'm doing really well campaign wise. My tech and base are really high for how early it still easy.
One cool change that I think is how I have to constantly swap out troops now. With them getting tired and injured all the time. It least to a much broader group of people fighting. Course downside is they're leveling slower too.
More great fun and can't wait to beat it this weekend. Or tomorrow....
edit: This militia can be amazing sometimes. Saw them wipe out four mutons and a berserk.
Seems like the Mac & Linux versions are available now (at least it's downloading to my Mac anyhow, will be a while before I can check it runs).
I've been waiting to get XCOM 2, but it sounds like the new expansion is the bomb. I'm not ready to shell out 70+ bucks for both, is the Vanilla still worth playing?
IMO skip vanilla and just play it with WotC.
Vanilla XCOM 2 is still really great IMO. It is the kind of game you'll probably want to play multiple times, so if you can't justify the full $70, just play the base game, and when you're ready for some new content on subsequent playthroughs WOTC will still be there.
Imo, going directly to WotC would be a pretty steep difficulty curve. Even xcom veterans were having trouble with xcom2 when it first came out. Chosen is the superior definitive version of xcom. That said, it works because a lot of us have put in over a hundred hours of playtime. Take the opinions of us diehards with a pinch of salt.
Is there a good beginner guide for vanilla XCOM 2 anyone knows of? I'm still early on in my first campaign, but I'm pretty sure I'm already hosed.I only have two soldiers at the third rank, one is wounded, I have two soldiers that just got their class rank, and haven't managed to research any upgraded weapons or armor sets. The robot enemies and vipers just got introduced, and the best squad I could field just got mangled in a medium difficulty mission.
i don't know that I'll have the stamina to run a bunch of failed campaigns just to feel like I have a clue what I'm doing, so any help along the lines of what I should be prioritizing would be good. I assume the tip of "save scum to avoid losing soldiers" goes without saying, even though I hate to do that.
