It may seem early again, but I'm already out trying to sign folks up for Extra Life, and I think it might behoove those involved this year to try and get the GWJ community more involved before the donation drive. So see if we can get donations before the Fall rather than after the drive and during the event.
What is Extra Life 2015?
Extra Life is a charity event where, for one day a year, gamers of all types from all over marathon video games for 24 hours. So it's like a charity run, but with more cheese dust and sleep deprivation and less, y'know, healthiness. Any participant can work alone or join a team and raise money for a children's hospital of their choice. The 24 hour time-frame can be split up across multiple days, you can spend it playing board games, or you can hold one giant video game party with real people if you'd like. As long as there are games being played for a total span of 24 hours.
How does GamersWithJobs get involved?
We have a team that you can join if you would like to participate. Discuss with other GWJers to learn what they've done in the past, as well as working together to organize games to play as a group, involving the community or just trying to stay awake late at night.
What if I can't play games for 24 hours or donate?
We have a Vent channel dedicated to Extra Life. Many of us streamers may be making use of that channel in order to have company or even discuss multiplayer games. So if you'd like to watch our streams and join in on the conversation, that will be a way. Or you can find a multiplayer game likely to be played that weekend, such as Splatoon, Mortal Kombat X, Bloodborne, or Super Smash Bros.
Who is participating?
I'm in!
I set up my account. Cool to see you have as well, GP. Maybe we can record a segment!
I plan to make this a part of my birthday gaming. There's a family member who has a child with heart issues. The personal reason is impetus to enter for the first year.
Kinda makes me want a For Dummies guide to setting up the infrastructure*.
I'd love to do a 24 hour Farming Simulator stream.
* I've never even streamed a game live online.
Does one have to stream the whole time? I'm figuring the Steam stuff will be easy, but WiiU...
This is going to be an awesomely positive way to make end of year pile progress.
Thanks, Chris.
Sounds great, I'm happy to get involved, will stream the whole thing as well! Was thinking maybe of trying to do a speedrun of a game or two as well as getting involved in some online play. Would be cool if we could make a mini league where we all try and play a certain amount of games against each other to gain points. I'm happy, from my collection of gaming swag, to donate a prize or two, whether it be for people participating or for people who donate!
Not really sure about what hospital to do it for since they're all North American, but I'm going to pick one in Ontario since I used to live there for a short time and have fond memories!
Best of luck to everyone again this year. I'll be sure to donate as usual to the cause
Count me in for this year as well, hopefully this time I will also stream!
I'm thinking about doing this again this year, it was fun last year! Fallout 4 coming out 3 days after this is the worst timing.
So less than a month away, how are we all doing?
I sent out my first round of emails asking for support yesterday, and am going to do a little video with my kids and send that / post that beginning of next week to a wider group.
Definitely in for Splatoon. Not sure what other multiplayer games I would be able to play, so my stream will be mostly kid friendly stuff during the day, and more grown up games in the night time.
Possibly would try to finish Affordable Space Adventures with my kids, that might be interesting to watch.
No worries, Chris. I feel you with the being busy part, I've been working a lot and unable to play much. Which is ok, it's life, and this is gamers with JOBS, after all.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to do the full 24 hours, as I have had a bit of job upheaval this year =[
I still intend to play for a large chunk of it though and I will join in with a lot of the crew for some games, especially if there's some Bloodborne on the go.
I'll get you information on the make-up dates and such. Extra Life doesn't require you to do it all on the same day, it's just easier to make a social media hit if everyone's going at the same time. But I know gamerparent tends to split his up into two 12 hour marathons, or has in the past, and plenty of folks will do their stream on the following weekend.
I was hoping to take time off work, but I've changed jobs twice this year so don't have any extra holidays, which is a shame, and I don't want to risk being super tired there when I've only just joined.
I'll definitely be on for quite a few hours on the actual date though, and I'll try split it up to make up to the 24!
Nov. 7th this year? Sweet, maybe I can actually watch the streams this time!
Yep, this year my plan is to start on Friday afternoon, end in the evening, and then resume Saturday morning. I can't stay up overnight so I'll end at a civilized hour on Sat but get up early on Sunday to join the final hours.
Sunday From 10:30 - noon
First question: I'm super sorry but which one of youse guys is Matt Warren? For the life of me I cannot recall.
In many ways, aren't we all Matt Warren?
I was tempted to get Divinity Original Sin on PS4 if anyone wants to stream a lot of co-op for the game, that'd be quite fun. I'll be able to stream from PC and PS4, I think!
Matt Warren is DocBadWrench, he's not the most active user on the forums (That coming from me, lol).
Everyone pumped for this weekend?
I'm getting there. I'm getting over a cold at the moment, but should be ready to go come Saturday. Keeping with tradition, I should be starting around 10 AM Mountain.
Those times are EST? I'll try to remember to stop by at 5 since I'm interested to see Transformers in action
