Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Catch-All

Best SW ever. One of my favorite movies ever.

Definitely not 6 year old appropriate, IMO.

Not even remotely. This is a dark, violent movie. Far moreso than ESB.

If episodes I-VII are space opera, this is much grittier. Think Dark Knight as compared to the campy Batman TV show.

Very cool. Definitely check it out first before bringing the kids. Darker than Any of the other sw movies.

I don't think I liked it very much. Surprise!

I know I did.

Came here for this. Was not disappointed.

Spoiler:

Blows Episode 7 out of the water.

I'm in the uber home. I loved it so much!

Spoiler:

Darth Vader is terrifying again!

Amazingly, I actually agree this time. I put my thoughts in the spoiler thread. I think it was worth the $12 I paid to see it. The IMAX 3D experience of Rogue One is technically very good. The things that put me off were more on the production side.

Now I am even more excited. When so many Certified GeeksTM are raving, then I can't wait!

Can't wait until tonight. 2 major Star Wars movies in 2 years. What world do we live in?

Its awesome.

And, y'know, they are actually GOOD!

A random thought.. Was I the only one that felt that of ALL the trailers they showed before Rogue One, only Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 (of which I had seen before) provided any semblance of a movie that I actually wanted see?

Same thoughts here. From the reaction of the theater most of them as well.

Guardians of the Galaxy was the only one that the audience in my theater reacted positively to. Kong: Skull Island got some murmurs. Power Rangers got a lot of derisive laughter, just like every other time I've seen that trailer played.

We got Transformers. I can't even remember any others.

I thought the Transformers one was interesting, but usually if I think a trailer is awesome, the movie sucks. And vice versa.

We had Kong, F8 of the Furious and Guardians. Kittylexy was into Kong, and the crowd was slightly positive on it; F8 of the Furious got some mockery, and Guardians got a lot of woos and laughter.

In addition to Guardians, we got Wonder Woman and Spider Man, which both looked good. And Transformers, which looked ... not so good.

We had Spider-Man, Dunkirk and Guardians. That Dunkirk trailer is fantastic. Not sure I really care about the movie, but the trailer does a fantastic job building tension.

On the Rogue One front, we all loved it. My 7 yr. old handled it fine. They don't make it gory or overly melodramatic, but it is dark.

I thought the PG-13 rating should have done that. People are dumb.

I admit that this comment has been bothering me for a few days now. Maybe I'm not interpreting the statement correctly or I'm being oversensitive but every PG and PG-13 Star Wars movie (every single one of them so far) my little fan has seen and in the case of the latter I've checked it out first.

Especially with the caveat that Tanglebones gave, I'm not inclined to take him to see it without at least vetting it myself first but FFS he's been over the moon about wanting to see it for the past six month with the way they've been marketing it. Either way my kid gets a stark lesson in life.

Well, it's not like the rating stops marketers from marketing the movie to every age group possible. It's like the Walmart commercial that was playing earlier this Christmas season. It showed a mom and young child walking happily out of the store with their PS4 -- the one plastered with the M rated game. I can only assume they were so happy to be buying the system for the unseen dad or college age sibling.

Saw it today. Loved it. I can understand why it might not play for some people, and there are some pacing/character issues if you want to pull at the seams, but as a war movie set in the Star Wars universe, I thought it was aces. Really, really enjoyed it.

For the younger crowd, it's just going to depend on the kid. It's not bloody, but it is... intense. Mildest of not-at-all-surprising spoilers...

Spoiler:

Lots and lots of in-your-face death.

Which is going to trouble some kids more than others.

Ratings are also almost entirely arbitrary too, PG 13 could mean the word 'sh*t' is used twice, or it could mean someone gets decapitated. It makes sense to check with people who have a frame of reference.

I may have been a tad too curt with that statement. When my youngest son was 8 or so, I knew I had a 75% chance at a PG-13 movie being no big deal for him. PG-13 means they can say 'f*ck' one time, any more and it becomes 'R'. They can suggest sex, but no nipples or bare asses. I think smoking might trigger an 'R' rating. Most amounts of violence are acceptable at PG-13, but there better not be too much blood. It's a fairly silly, arbitrary rating in a lot of ways. That said, if a movie gets a PG-13 rating, I will be damned sure to examine what went into the movie before taking my 8 year old (in fact, my youngest son is pretty sensitive to people being in pain, so I still look out for things when taking him to movies). I didn't get spoiled on the big painful moment in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so I couldn't really prep him for that, but I was sitting right next to him, and when the moment approached, I had a bad feeling about it, so I put my arm around him and held him close when it happened. I assumed, from other Star Wars movies that hit PG-13, that there would be some dark moments, like Anakin's implied murder of the Jedi preschool, or a planet destroyed. If that kind of thing doesn't bother your kid, then congratulations, you can make the parental guidance decision that a PG reflects. If you are taking the time to think about the rating, then you are almost certainly not under the dumb people blanket that I so casually threw out there.

Good time to remind people about http://www.kids-in-mind.com

My wife loves it because there are certain levels of gore she can't handle. Site descriptions can sometimes be a bit spoilery, but it's useful.

I loved it, but Tom Chick and the Quarter to Three were not kind on their Qt3 movie podcast.

Tom Chick only likes terrible things so that's a great sign.

Just got back from it, loved it. This is not your granddaddy's Star Wars. It has all the strengths of the franchise, the sense of scale and wonder, without the weaknesses, the twee campbell 101 storylines and wooden performances. There was some snark doing the rounds at someone saying that Rogue One 'puts the War in Star Wars,' but it's actually a sharp insight. In a lot of ways it felt weirdly in line with the Dunkirk preview.

Some inconsistent characterization is my only notable criticism.

To me there's nothing that will disturb really young kids, but most would go over their head and they would be bored. Some stuff happens that I think might upset slightly older ones. Nothing graphic, just nasty surprises.
