RIP Leonard Nimoy

Got up through "Amok Time" and "Mirror, Mirror" tonight.

I swear that moment when Spock says "Jim!" at the end of "Amok Time" may be my favorite moment from TOS.

I'm partial to exchange between McCoy and Spock in "The Immunity Syndrome:"

"Shut up, Spock! We're rescuing you!"

"Why thank you...Captain McCoy."

George Takei talks about Leonard Nimoy

When Star Trek became an animated TV series, they had a budget, and they hired Bill Shatner, and Leonard, and Jimmy Doohan, and Majel Barrett to do the voices. When Leonard found out about that, he asked, “Why aren’t Nichelle and George on board as well?” They said, “We don’t have the budget for them.” And Leonard said, “Star Trek is about diversity, and the two people who represent diversity most are Nichelle and George, and if they can’t be a part of this project, then you don’t want me.” He was willing to walk off that show for us. That takes guts and principles and loyalty. It was because of that strong position that he took that Nichelle and I were hired to do the voices on the animated series as well. He’s that kind of guy.

One of my favourite long-running podcasts, Treks in Sci Fi did a great tribute episode this week. Worth a listen.

Win.

I don't get why this is heart breaking. Did Nimoy and Shatner hate each other more than I know? I know Shatner is an egotistical ass hat, and he may have not liked how Spock was more revered than Kirk, but... I feel like I'm missing something.

Got to see Sarek tonight watching "Babel" and had a good laugh about the tribbles, like always. Also the strange Jack the Ripper plot in that Sotty-centric episode.

This marathon has been fun. That list of 25 seems pretty solid and we're over halfway done now. Although if anyone else uses it, there are a couple listed out of episode order. Not that there's a ton of continuity in TOS, but still better to watch in order I think.

I thought the point was that becoming best friends made Star Trek worthwhile. That is kinda heartbreaking, now that one of the friends is gone.

It's heartbreaking because a generation of kids is growing up now believing multiple animated GIFs of captioned TV grabs is a reasonable way to communicate text.

So, how did most people get into TOS (especially in comparison to TNG)? I'll assume most of us here didn't watch the original series as it was live in the 1960s.

So, I started with TNG, like live, along with the TOS Movies, and I didn't really watch TOS the show until much later (mornings on the Sci-Fi channel), along with, believe it or not, all the games. Kobyashi Alternative, Nettrek, EGA Trek, VGA Planets, 25th Anniversary/Judgment Rites, and all the various MU*s were all neat games and all based on TOS, along with, believe it or not, the After Dark Screen Saver. It wasn't until many years later did TNG games start to come out.

I'm sure I saw some reruns in the 80s. But I watched every ep of TNG with my parents on Sat nights during the first run. And had seen the movies, and even figured out on my own that the even ones were good and odd ones were bad. Didn't watch DS9 when it was new though. Not sure why, we just liked TNG and stuck with it. Even when I heard Worf had joined DS9 after TNG ended I never went to check it out. Casually watched Voyager some. Refused to watch Enterprise on principle. Just name the ship something different and I'd have given it a chance. :p

Still not sure I ever sat down and watched every ep of TOS. Caught lots of them on reruns through the years. Would watch marathon days when Sci-Fi or whatever channel would show a few in a row. I'm still not 100% sure I've seen them all. But maybe 6 years ago I went through and re-watched every ep of TNG, DS9, and Voyager over a really long period. My wife watched all of DS9 with me and really loved it, although she never got into any of the rest very much.

After watching Tribbles tonight and Mirror universe yesterday, we've been talking about watching DS9 all over again, which I think is an excellent idea.

My memory is pretty hazy, but either the summer before or after my first year in kindergarten, there was a program or promotion or something my mom took me to that was just kids watching movies. There was a robot that took our tickets. I have distinct memories of seeing three movies in this capacity--the Robert Altman Popeye, The Last Starfighter, and Star Trek III. One of those is the first second* movie I remember seeing in theaters, if not period. Thereafter, I caught reruns like everyone else.

*I just dredged up a memory of seeing E.T. first.

VHS from Blockbuster: they had a few episodes and some of the movies. And Interplay's Star Trek 25th Anniversary.

I started with the movies at a very young age (early 80s) since my parents were tired of me watching the Star Wars trilogy repeatedly every weekend on VHS. Then they introduced me to episodes of TOS airing in syndication and a few years later TNG started airing. Rest was history.

Was introduced to TNG in 1991 by a school friend. VI in theatres followed, plus the rest of the movies on VHS and then all TOS reruns I watch on TV.

'Spocking' Laurier on $5 not illegal, says Bank of Canada

Still a perfectly legal way to honour Leonard Nimoy, though the Bank would prefer if you didn't.

Forget you, Bank.

As I mentioned previously, as a kid, I watched some TOS episodes in syndication during the late 70s, maybe very early 80s too. As for the movies with the TOS cast, I'm pretty sure I watched at least some of them, but they didn't have any lasting effect on me.

The Star Trek that had the most impact on me was TNG. I don't know if it was because I was at an age/time of my life (late teens) where I was more receptive (for a lack of better term) to it, or if it was the improved visuals/production value, or what, but TNG really connected with me. I watched episodes as they aired whenever I could catch them, and I also watched all of the movies. A few years ago, I watched the entirety of TNG series on Netflix.

For whatever reason, I never had much interest in watching any of the following series.

When I was a kid (and we are talking early-mid 70s here), TOS was actually still shown on BBC1 in primetime. I distinctly remember being annoyed because it clashed with a soap opera my mother watched...I think it was on something like 7.20-8pm.

Also bear in mind that in those heady days, there were a grand total of 3 (THREE) TV channels. No cable, no satellite, no VCRs.

Never really got into any of the others. TNG looked crap at the time because it was recorded on video stock, I think, plus much of the early stuff was properly dull. Never really bothered with the others.

I watched TOS re-runs as a kid in the late 70s after kindergarten. I remember coming home and watch 3-4 hours of TV each day starting with cartoons and ending with Star Trek. I watched episodes of the 6 Million Dollar man in there as well.

Is it illegal to send Canadian money through the mail? I want a Spocked $5 bill, but have neither Canadian $5 bills, nor any ability to draw.

Not illegal, just unwise (can't be compensated if lost/stolen). I only have a couple of new fivers and tried Spocking one up, but I don't think this Laurier is as good as the old fives. If I get an older bill, I'll PM you.

In related news, Star Trek Online still exists.

It's getting kinda dusty again...

That took me a minute. I wasn't seeing the scissors as a pair of scissors but like a Clippy character with a feather.

I'm late to the how I got into star trek party ... but for me it was via my parents. Both were Star Trek fans, my mother especially so. We didn't have cable in the 80's, but along with the three network channels received two different PBS stations, and one of them would frequently play reruns late at night and on the weekends. I have fond memories of sometimes being allowed to stay up late on non-school nights and watching Star Trek with my mother.

When TNG came out, there was much excitement. My parents were not impressed with the first episode though, so we never watched it after that (actually, I don't remember seeing the premier at all, though I remember that they didn't like it). My parents weren't big fans of the first movie, so for that all we had was a poorly recorded version that had aired on TV. Beyond the edits made for TV, this was the age of needing to remember to hit record/pause if you wanted to skip commercials ... and whoever was doing so managed to skip some important scenes accidentally). We did have all of the others on VHS once they were available though. Star Trek IV was a particular favorite that got a lot of VCR time.

At some point, my parents ended up with a rather old television in their bed room, and I remember heading in there on occasion to try to watch DS9. I didn't really get into anything non-TOS until sometime in my twenties though. Not having a TV of my own as a kid, my TV/movie watching was always heavily dominated by my parents preferences (outside of Saturday morning).

Yeah, that threw me too.

Circa 1986, I was an awkward youth into science fiction and fantasy. I'm older, still awkward, and still dabble in the classic end of the nerd pool.

I don't remember the time of year, but I do remember being at the Disneyland Hotel. A couple of friends and I attended a Star Trek/sci-fi con and the full original cast of Star Trek was going to unite for a 20th anniversary celebration of the TV series. There was a huge cake in the shape of the original Enterprise. It was well known that they did not all get along, so a full cast reunion was big.

I'll never forget meeting the cast at that event, including Leonard Nimoy. I told him I was a fan of his narration of "In Search of..." And that Spock was cool, too. He gave me a wink and a smile and said thanks.

It was an inconsequential meeting to him, I'm sure. I'm not a Trekkie, but I won't soon forget that day. It's just this is a little chunk of nerd cred I have tucked away, among all the cobwebs and such.

Peace on your journey, Mr. Nimoy. Party logical.

I don't get it.
