Some examples of the amazing things that can be done with these dolls:
"Rickter" by an artist named Christy
A classic Narae (by the Narindoll company)
A Rainydoll head customized by Lucky13 (I believed she also made the wig.)
I have lots more, but it seems like this community is especially popular with people who either want to create their own original characters or want to recreate famous people/characters in doll form. (Which is why the Minimee from Doll In Mind was so popular for a while until it was discontinued in 2012... you would send in a picture and they would cast the picture into five resin heads that would be compatible with most companies' bodies. I think it got to be too hard on the group of sculptors.)
If anyone wants to get into the hobby I would advise them to go to a doll meet first to see if they were interested before they leapt into a purchase. Otherwise people tend to start "small" with the 45cm tall MSDs and then end up exploding from there into the 60-62cm tall and up.
Here are the Funko Firefly figures - lighting looks off which makes some of the faces look weird but pretty good likenesses.
I can get a custom group of Lego firefly figures for probably the same cost so a tough decision.
Where is River, The Doctor, and Book? I thought they just did the big head tiny body toys. Just looked them up and the first wave of these look horrible. This set looks a lot better.
They will be in wave 2.
I saw some of that wave at Walmart the other day. They looked pretty good but I've recently parted with all my Marvel Legends stuff and I'm going to try not to buy anymore. I just don't "pose" them enough and comic book stuff is cool but below my list of Lego, star wars and anime stuff.
I did start buying the Disney Infinity Marvel figures because they are cheaper and look really good.
I do like some of those Disney Infinity figures. Haven't bought any since I don't have the game.
Same here. They are tempting, but I'm not yet willing to open up that can of worms...
I really should dust so I can take pictures and show how terrible I already am about my plastic figures.
Actually I don't have the game or even a console. I just display the figures
Those Hot Toys, man. They will invade your dreams, and life, and eventually your house. Forget they exist!

Are these ball jointed dolls? Back in 2008 I was at a Chinese restaurant and got talking to two women who were dressing a doll at the table. It looked like one of these.
I got talking to them and, out of curiosity, went to an event they had. I wasn't interested in having a doll, but why grown-ups were 'playing' with them.
It ended up as a topic on hatchetjob.com; I could see similarities between what these men and women were doing (there was one guy, a Bob Hoksins look-a-like, at the event) and the way gamers 'dress' and customise their avatars.
Interesting day out.
EDIT
I'm sure the show is terribly amateurish to listen to now (it's changed a lot since then), but here's the episode

For me that was a lot of it. Someone handed me a blank canvas (albeit a 3D one) and I got to design a look from top to bottom. I went a little crazy with it for a while, but now I'm mostly happy to see the visions other people have.
It's too bad the hobby has been stigmatized (playing with dolls, full of crazy people, etc.), then largely forgotten. I think it's still capable of showing some really interesting art (painting, sculpting, sewing, among others).
I think it was quite stigmatised back then. But I when I spoke to them the - and remember this was in 2008 - some of the prices for the dolls were crazy. Could that have led to the hobby losing members?
It's unfortunate that some hobbies get a stigma attached to them and some don't. I mean, look at hunting, for instance. I know people that do it just for the sport. Does having a few action figures affect the world around you? Not so much.
I have no problem with hunting or hunters. I actually think population control is a necessary evil. But, it is strange to me that something like ending life can be normal and you can post pictures of your fresh kill all over social media, however if you post one picture of a 1/6th scale Star Lord you must have social issues and are some sort of man-child stuck in arrested development.
Que sera sera. People are going to like what they like and as long as it brings them joy, F the haters yo.

Prices have always been crazy, but that's because you're importing a jointed sculpture. Every piece of the doll, (every bit of every limb) is cast in resin and has to have time to set and be sanded before someone strings the thing with hooks and elastic at the right tension to keep it all together. The casting is a sensitive enough process that monsoon season used to stop production every year.
If you think of it like that the prices seem slightly less outrageous. Slightly. 3D customizable painting? Maybe.
When I hit a rough patch for a while I did sell off a doll a month for a year to pay my rent. So it ended up retaining most of the value, (never did buy anything back, just stuck with the 2 I have left now).
There's got to be some rare anime/comic book figurines that are comparably expensive? Dunno much about them, and seeing them in the thread has been neat.
Entry level for static anime figures is about $100. I haven't seen quality comic / anime dolls, but I'm sure they exist. Fandom runs deep.
I needs this to go with my Tychus Findlay statue.
I'm surprised that I didn't notice any reference to the Star Wars Revo series in Japan. Perhaps I just missed it, but Boba Fett was recently put up for preorder. These are super nice.
Random store chosen, but http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/det... .

I don't know a whole lot about this stuff, but I know betamotali makes custom 1/6th scale figures that go for high prices. http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/fo...
So does Rainman.

Customs from them can go from around $700 all the way up to $2000.

I've been picking up the Star Wars Black figures. I don't do a lot of posing so I don't collect revotech stuff. (although that does not stop me from getting figma figures hehe)
I would buy that firefly set. Are those custom, or commercially available?
and.. care of Reddit, somehow.

They will be available commercially later this year I believe. Probably will be able to get them the same place you've seen the GoT and MtG figures (same company making them)

That Mr Bean looks creepy...
MODELS is where it's at. Anyone can buy an action figure. Building models together with your kid is a whole different level of fun.
Oh the trials and tribulations of collecting.
I thought I had the figma Sinon pre-orderd from AmiAMi but for some reason I did not.
Now I'll have to get it from 2nd hand sellers
/adds $30 to cost
