Perdita - An Ongoing GWJ Community 5e Game - OOC Thread

You know, I'm not sure exactly how I missed this, but definitely add me into the list of people who want in on this.

I plan on making multiple characters so that I can fill roles if it looks like we might need a specific class for an adventure. I know myself and I know that I tend to obsess over this sort of stuff and since I have no other tabletop games going right now they'll be a lot of focus here. Plus it would give me a chance to play roles that I don't typically play.

Good idea. I might toy with that as well.

You are in!

PM me your Obsidian Portal username or e-mail address and I'll invite you. Once you have a character, post a link to their Obsidian Portal page here and commence signing up for missions / posting missions for others to sign up for!

One of my favorite aspects of 5e is that it isn't role based. Any combo of classes can work. I would encourage people to play what they want to, not what they think they should. This isn't 4e, a party of three fighters and a rogue is viable, as is a party of four half orc monks.

That said, feel free to make a backup character - making characters is fun and options are always good! Just remember that splits your progression up a bit if you are swapping characters in and out. If DMs think that certain classes are must haves for their mission, they should include text to that effect in their notes when they post the mission, or put hints in the mission description. For my first one, I put in some hints that having a sneaky character could be useful, but honestly if three plate mail wearing low dex Paladins had jumped in, they'd be fine. It would just be a different approach.

I do believe so far I am the only ranger...and am I also the only gnome?

Somebody should totally make a two-spirit dragonborn druid or sorcerer.

Thanks for the break down! It is really interesting. I'm sort of surprised at which classes are popular. One of the reasons I went ahead with a fighter was because I thought nobody would play a boring ol' fighter :). I'm also surprised we don't have a Dragonborn sorcerer, that seems to be a popular combo among the games I've played at a table - whereas this is the first time I've seen someone play a monk (let alone three people!)

Monks have always been popular in tabletop sessions that I have been in.

I think Asterith was talking about being a druid so that really only leaves sorcerer as unplayed.

I've got a druid rolled up. Just haven't gotten him entered online. Tried doing it via my iPad the other day and it crashed on me. Will get Aglanor the Effusive up this weekend.

I vote for names like 'Nana' and 'Peepo' ;)

Dear Nana. I lost my binky in the fires of Hellforge Abyss. Please send another.
Hugs & kisses,
Amnon

Hey, Amnon have up binkies when he left home. Give him some credit. Although, if Nana sent along some cookies, he wouldn't complain.

I'd wager that Kasha would love to get her hands on the recipe. And Laurel always wanted to get some Abyssal Cinnamon in stock...

Laurel 'Swift' Swiftriver

Laurel is a half-elf rogue from a far northern maritime town at the mouth of a river used by smaller trade vessels, owing to its relative lack of depth and proximity to what amounted to frozen tundra, with the accompanying tendency to freeze solid in the winter. She grew up in a slightly diverse environment, since as a coastal trade town she often saw many folks of various races and backgrounds come through on their way elsewhere, but herself was one of the few half-breeds who lived there. It didn't help that, as she growingly became aware of herself and what she looked like, she always felt like something wasn't quite right about herself.

No matter what Laurel tried, she just couldn't seem to fit in with anyone in town. Thus, she didn’t have many friends growing up, and developed a strong rebellious, anti-authoritarian streak in order not to feel invisible. She was frequently in trouble with her family and the town council, but never enough to suffer very serious consequences. It was during one of her desperate escapes from the town constable that she ducked into a crowd of half orcs to hide and ran, literally, into Kasha.

Kasha and Laurel quickly connected. They often took long camping trips outside of Kasha’s village and Laurel’s city together. Kasha taught Laurel how to hunt and survive. After Laurel made her first kill, a deer, Kasha carved a piece of scrimshaw from its bones with their initials and presented it to Laurel as a gift. Laurel wove it into a sailor’s bracelet and wears it on her wrist to this day, in fact, she’s never taken it off.

Laurel showed Kasha how to navigate the city, how to read the motion of crowds, how to raft on the river, the hidden corners that held hundreds of new experiences if you knew where to look.

With Kasha, Laurel felt understanding of herself start to come into focus. The way Kasha treated her just felt right, as though the half-orc could see past Laurel’s exterior with no effort at all. They were very close. But as Laurel came to know herself through Kasha, Laurel knew that she would have to drastically change herself, and that couldn't happen in their cold, far-flung part of the world. She would have to go to Perdita, somewhere where, through rumors and sailor’s idle talk, she heard that there were herbs and clerics and wizards that could help fix what had been wrong with Laurel her entire life.

As they grew into young adults, Laurel and Kasha became closer and began building a life, but even as she grew more comfortable in herself and her confidante, Laurel still ached. Knowing that what she’d wanted her entire life could only be found far from Kasha was tearing her apart inside, but she knew that bottling up her feelings would only make things worse. And so, Laurel came to the hardest choice she'd ever make.

In a book of love poems that Kasha had once admired in the market, Laurel signed her name for the first time with a shaking hand and tearful eyes. She went home that night, and confessed everything to Kasha. Her gut wrenched and eyes watered as she stumbled through her rehearsed speech, watching her words rip apart the only friend she’d ever known, although the monk-in-training remained as outwardly calm as a windless lake.

When Kasha said “Go. Find what you need”, she did. She kissed Kasha goodbye, and wordlessly left the book behind.

Laurel gathered what money she had from trading, working, and pickpocketing, and left on a departing trade galley that very night. That night, and every single one after, she stared out over the ocean, fingers rubbing the grooves of the carved bone bracelet as Kasha filled her thoughts.

She went to Perdita, started going by an alias, ‘Swift’, got the help she needed, and, over time, became the cunning, kind, confident, but still quite rebellious, woman she is.

Laurel and Kasha wrote a few times over the last five years, but haven’t seen each other since. Laurel is wrapping up her latest enlistment on a trade galley, where she’s gained a knack for spotting, of all things, good spice.

And so, Laurel’s back in Perdita once more, trying to decide what path she’ll take next.

Ideal: Everyone's freedom to determine who they are must be protected.
Bond: I left someone behind who I deeply cared for. Still do. I won’t make the same mistake if I see her again.
Flaw: I'm confident in my skills, sometimes too much. When someone dares me to do something, I never back down.

e: Laurel and Kasha's parting from Laurel's perspective.

Corzaren Wraithbred, half-elf druid raised by ghosts, has been created on Obsidian Portal. Still have some tweaking to do, mostly story and background, but Wembley helped me get most of it up there.

Aglanor Ro
(Wood Elf Druid)

Born the 12th son to the king of the Karnotch, a small, insignificant forest country not too far from here, Aglanor Ro’s life wasn’t all you might think it would be. He had trouble gaining an audience with his father from birth, his siblings ignored him almost professionally and his peasant mother died when he was just a teen. Some say her death caused the plum-colored blotch that spread across most of one side of his face, but he’d been born that way.

A mediocre, dreamy student, Aglanor never found a path in life he wanted to follow. He had friends. He had a small home. But he’d never had a purpose.

On his hundredth birthday celebration, things changed for Aglanor. The king, his father, and the queen, and all his siblings, and most of the people of the Karnotch were in attendance when Aglanor burned down his birth tree and nearly destroyed the entire forest.

Cast out by his father, Aglanor became a hermit. He found a cave that had been abandoned by a bear because it was too dank and small. He grew some vegetables for food. And he thought about things. He thought long about things. He thought hard about things. For thirty years.

But he didn’t sulk. He didn’t become bitter. No, Aglanor looked around him and saw the animals didn’t let life get them down. They soldiered on, happy as a woodchuck or a rabbit or a vole could be. Aglanor chose to become like the animals. Aglanor chose to be happy. More than happiness; he chose indifference. Indifference to the trials and tribulations of life.

And then he caused a cave-in, destroying his home. So, he decided to go to the city.

Personality Traits: Believes everything works out for the best in the end

Ideals: People need help seeing the happiness in front of them

Bonds: Totem made of tree ashes

Flaw: Happy and positive to a fault

I've got the shell of Ankana Oathbreaker, Mountain Dwarf Warlock and ex-member of the 51st Hammerfist Legion up. Haven't had a chance to write out the backstory yet but it's coming.

My PHB arrived today, mostly information I already knew but fun to see the small changes from the playtest, mostly for the better I believe.

Sorcerer and Warlock seems pretty cool I might have to make one or two at some point.

More Detail!

Corzaren Wraithbred (Half-elf Druid)

When Corzaren Wraithbred was a young child, the rest of his village was massacred by an unknown group of assailants. His family sacrificed themselves to hide him. The villagers, seeing Corzaren lost and alone, gave up their opportunity to pass on to the afterlife and instead remained to raise him in a most unusual fashion. As he got older, the villagers began to realize he was grown up and capable of handling himself and started to pass on, but every once in a while they stop by to visit. He has spent his early adult years in seclusion as a hermit. His lack of contact with living beings has left him uncomfortable in their presence. After spending most of his life around ghosts, Corzaren has learned the truth of what happens in the afterlife. Now that most of his family has passed on, he has realized that it's time to go out into the world to let people know that the afterlife is not to be feared, and to seek those who attacked his village and take vengeance.

Personality Trait: I see ghosts and treat them like living people. It's the polite thing to do after all.

Ideal: Free thinking, living your life in isolation with only ghosts as company tends to encourage you to think for yourself.

Bond: I entered seclusion to hide and recover and now it's time to head into the world and take vengeance.

Flaw: I’d risk too much to discover a lost bit of knowledge about those who killed my family.

Here's a link to my character for the OP: Amnon

Hookay, finally got my Player's Handbook. Going to flip through it and make my character in the next couple days.

If we're going to be doing some combat tomorrow you should create a roll20(or I can, no big deal) so that I can set up some macros. If I have GM status I can set it so the macros appear for everyone so things like skill checks are just one click. Helps speed things up. Since there's only three of us I'm not as concerned about that sort of thing, but if we ever run games with 5 or more the macros really help speed things up.

I will definitely set up a Roll20, and happily have you handle the Macros :).

It is looking like my potential issue (namely an agent meeting) is being pushed to Thursday at 6:45 (curse you underwhelming blizzard!) If we delayed exactly one week would you, Wembley, and Tanglebones all still be free?

I would be free.

Unfortunately, Scabrin's got an event that night.

Okay, I'm trying to work it out to get the meeting slotted for earlier - if that works I can be home and we can aim to start at 7:45 instead of 7. Failing that, I'll delay a week. I'm going to attempt to keep my Thursday evenings open in general for this campaign, so I'm sure if Scabrin misses this initial run, there will be more to come :).

Thursday night is when we usually do our releases to production, but since it's the 'agile' thing I only have to work those when I have an issue in that release.

So if we have to delay I can potentially be there, depends if have anything in the release or not.

I'm cool with starting later and playing later tomorrow if that's what you'd like to do.

Let me see how things shake out with my conflict - if it can happen sooner that's my preference. Apologies everyone for the inconvenience!

Okay, so moving my slot didn't prove possible. Apologies for having to cancel at the last moment. Today is a bit of a mad house on top of all of that, so bear with me as I organize a reschedule.

No worries, we all know how it is.
