Thought I'd open a thread for this. Microsoft just announced that Windows 10 will be free for Windows 8 and Windows 7 users, as well as Windows Phone 8.1 users for the first year of availability. They're also framing W10 as a service rather than a product. I'm sure I'll be upgrading, but I don't really know what the benefit will be (yet) other than not having to deal with the Modern interface. Better functionality across devices sounds cool, except I don't have any other MS devices besides my work and home PCs.
Anyone find a better livestream than the official Microsoft one? It's getting hammered.

This guys hair is just so stupid.
I was going to hold off on Windows 10 until I build a new PC in 2016/2017, but if they're releasing it as a free update for the first year I might have to give a try now that Win7 recently hit the end of mainstream support. On the other hand, the fact that they're billing it as a "service" makes me nervous that this is going to turn into one of those "first hit's free" sort of deals...
They definitely mean "free for the first year of availability" and not "free...for the first year and THEN you pay" or "the first year of our new annual windows subscription is free", right?
'Cause you know....Microsoft.
I hope the free upgrade offers both clean install and in-place upgrade. I'm going to want to do both to different machines.
Wait, Joe Belfiore is on stage? With bad hair? Again?!?!?
You guys need to tell me about these things in advance.
@jeffgerstmann
Considering the whole Halo story covers Cortana going insane and rampant, I don’t know that I'd trust a personal assistant bearing her name.
Gaming news now.. Phil is on stage.. hair has left the building.
At this point this is just GFWL all over again.
Hoping for something more.

blerg...one hopes its more than just an Xbox App.
Linux is Free.. OS X is free.. all bad.
DX12 pimpage right now.. light on details.
Free is usually not free. Something is probably very wrong with W10.
Maybe they're doing that to try to recover from the W8 fiasco, but I think they would make it cheap for 7 users (and maybe free for 8 buyers, as an apology).
Free for everyone is probably very, very bad.
I'm waiting to hear what "free" means in this context. I have a hard time believing that MS will give me a forever license for Win10 for each Win7/8/8.1 license I own. If they do, then I'll probably upgrade after I've heard some positive impressions.
But if they mean "free for 1 year, then you pay subscriptions", then they can take a hike. I've got no interest in paying a subscription to keep using my hardware. See also: XBL Gold and PS+ and taking hikes.
Announcing streaming Xbox One games. Obvious announcement is obvious, but welcome.
Cross-platform play and stream from X1 to any Windows 10 PC or tablet--kinda cool! I think console to [device] local streaming is going be pretty big this year.
Yep, it works great with Steam, and the PS->Vita works pretty good as well. X1 to W10 is just as cool as any of those.
Oh, so this is streaming from the Xbox One "you already own!" and not a cloud-streaming service like PS Now?

Yes

So that would also mean streaming from Xbox One to a small pc stick on another tv in the house. Nice.
I was so in before this announcement with my predictions post.. so that totally counts.

Yawn.

So what do you think of using a Wii tablet anywhere in your house to play games while someone else watches TV. Was that a yawn, too? Because I am excited to have alternate screens to play my games on.
"Bold" prediction: Windows Hologram doesn't work.
Love the enthusiastic applause after the demo.

It's a yawn because I have an occasional interest in an Xbox-exclusive game but not in actually owning an Xbox One (sorry, jay. It's just not my thing. :)) And since I only have one television (and no computer) streaming to a tablet sounds like a mess. Would I prop it up in my lap and use a controller with it? Would I be expected to use touchscreen controls?
I mean, it's a cool feature, but it went from something that was personally very interesting to something that is personally very forgettable. Personally. For me. Personally. Individually.
Microsoft HoloLens the wth is this supposed to do product.. I'm still confused.

It is supposed to provide a cool tech demo of something that probably doesn't work in the real world.
DUH!
It's interesting to see the reaction on the internet to some of these announcements.. quite the contrast from Apple who can announce that a button has changed from silver to slate grey and the internet orgasms in pleasure.

is Nadella's outfit the new Steve Jobs turtleneck?
Free? Cool. Especially since I rather like Windows 8 anyway.
But then I haven't been a start menu user for years and years now. I liked Win 8 better when there was no start button at all. And the other complaints typically leveled at it are a non issue in my eyes.
So getting 10 for free is pretty much pure bonus for me.
