Amiibo Catch-All

We caught the bug. Bless my wife, "well, we just get the Mario series too, that way we can use them with Mario Party and not have to erase Smash data."

I love her sometimes.

So. It says on the box "as foes or allies." How do you use amiibo as an ally? I've only been putting them in free-for all.

If you turn on Teams in normal Smash, you can put your Amiibo on your team against the CPUs. I did it a bunch and it was a lot of fun.

That "one game at a time" Amiibo data restriction is really disappointing, and I would have reconsidered my interest in purchasing mine if I'd known about it. Fortunately I have only bought one so far.

Gah!

Target is shutting down in Canada, and they are the exclusive retailer for the Rosalina amiibo. I really wanted that one! Not sure what's going to happen with it now, whether we're just SOL or someone else is going to pick it up instead? Sigh.

I'm sure a GWJer in the US could get one and mail it to you.

I could 'live with that idea' if Nintendo gave a rock solid "always available" status to all amiibo, and they didn't eff around with retailer exclusives.

$10-15 dollars is acceptable to me for a guaranteed 'external backup' of my game progress, especially given how nifty those 'glorified memory cards' look.

As it currently stands, with supply uncertainty, and retailers opportunistically increasing the price (and don't even get me started on eBay, or that douchenozzle buying up all the Rosalina's out of hate of the character), I just see it as being too open to retail disappointment for the consumer.

It's too bad that Nintendo's online store couldn't have handled the entire thing, and limit orders to like, 2 per person or something.

I'm sure that would work too. We'll see. The latest word is that liquidation will take 4-5 months, and that stores will remain open for that time, so it's possible that they will still sell the Rosalina amiibo. I'll just have to camp out on release day, whenever that is. Anyone know when that is?

Like I said in the Nintendo Direct thread, I wouldn't be surprised if they skimped on storage for the current version of the product because they weren't 100% sure it would be a big enough hit. In addition, I don't know how much it costs for RFID things to be able to X amount of data, but usually more storage = most cost for the chips. It's certainly possible that for them to be able to hit the $10-15 price point they had to sacrifice convenience for affordability (same reason why the sculpts took a quality hit from E3 debut to retail). Keep in mind that the intent with all these figure based games is for people to buy multiple figures, and that's harder for people to justify once the price starts to go up. Especially when Nintendo's marketing seems to be trying to balance making these worthwhile to purchase without feeling essential or mandatory. If the prices were closer to $20-30, would people invest in them like they have given the limited things you can do with them in a game?

I think Amiibo 2.0 (when it happens) will probably have more storage simply because that's the way technology goes. I also think that the "one game at a time" limit will be an annoyance (and certainly hobbles the true potential of the Amiibo system), but if you look at the current compatibility charts there are currently few games that need to write to the figures. Most games seem to only read from them just to see what character or game it's from and that's about it. So I think the vast majority of Amiibo games are just going to be read-only with a handful actually writing data to the figures.

Talked to a young sales assistant at BigW in WA (Australia) and word from "the Nintendo Rep who was in on Tuesday" is that Australia 'should' see some amiibo stock returning to shelves I'm 'early February".

Oh well, two more weeks to save up.

My guess is Feb 13th to coincide with the N3DS.

February 1st is the listed release for that wave of amiibo here. Not sure about Canada.

The Nintendo website does say "February 2015", but not February 1st. Canada's nintendo site links through to the regular US .com site for most things anyway, so it's for all intents and purposes the same site.

It'll take a while before all stores close more than likely, so you'll probably get a chance.

(Evil laugh)

If they ever make a Windwaker Link or Tetra Amiibo, I'll be first in line. Otherwise, I think I can keep my money safe.

Get your wallet out and pre-order quick!

*sigh* Dang it.

Looks like they're sold out at Best Buy and maybe at Target? It doesn't let you pre-order. Is there another place to pre-order online?

Some of those (ie. Toon Link) have been available to pre-order at GameStop for a while now. I'd check there to see if you can still get a pre-order through (or try in-store).

Did some looking. As of 5 hours ago (and according to reddit Amiibo sub) Toon Link pre-orders are pretty much out. :/

I'm annoyed at the situation - pre-orders should drive production, not be limited by it. Same could be said for New 3DS models, I suppose.

Theoretically, they are shipped to stores as well, correct?

Yeah, it's especially annoying because you know half the people ordering are just buying them to flip. Jackasses.

Or to burn them in the case of Rosalina

It's stuff like this which make me hate people at times.

The stores should have a stock when released. That's what we are hoping for with Rosalina. Missed those pre-orders.

I'll keep an eye out for an extra Toon Link during our adventure at Target.

Ugh. That guy. Boooo. Loser.

There's a Fred Meyer and a Gamestop within walking distance from me, so maybe I'll check them in the morning on the release day. I really would like to get my hands on one and hopefully Tetra if they release her.

We missed the window on the Rosalina pre-orders as well. I'm hoping that since she's one of the more popular Mario characters they'll do more runs of her later this year.

Good news everyone /Farnsworth
