Splatoon 1 & 2 & 3

Splatoon is an upcoming third-person arena shooter developed by Nintendo for the Wii U. It's due to release in Spring 2015.

You fight using paint guns on one of two sides, and the goal of the match is to paint the floor of the arena in your team's color.

You move at a normal speed when walking over your paint, but you slow to a crawl when walking over the enemy's color. And if you get covered in too much of your enemy's paint, you'll die and respawn back at your base. While on your own color, you can also sink down into the paint to ambush enemies or to swim between pools of paint at high speed to rush around the arena.

Oh, and you're playing as some kind of anthropomorphized squid girl.

Here's the E3 announcement trailer:

It looks like there's a variety of weapons available, as well as cosmetic customizations for your characters. And while the game is focused on online multiplayer, there's a single player campaign, as well.

This isn't quite Nintendo's first foray into online multiplayer shooter games, but it's their first for a home console. It looks like it brings a lot of creativity in both visual presentation and design, and I'm super excited to play it.

I am very, very excited to see how this plays when I get my hands on it. One of the most intriguing shooters I've seen in ages.

I'm interested, but I soooooo hate aiming with sticks. I think imma have to pass, and that makes me sad.

I'd love to see them support a Wiimote + Nunchuck combo for this.

Edit: I don't know why I didn't think about this earlier, but there's some kind of gyro aiming for this using the gamepad. You do broad movements with the sticks and fine tune them with the gamepad. People who used it at E3 really liked it. Might be worth a shot if you get a chance to try it out.

Doesn't one of the games in NintendoLand use something like this? Or one of the 3DS games?

There are a few games that use something like it, including Wind Waker HD.

I'm excite for it.

Curious what the price point will be. Depending on the number of multiplayer game types and length of the single player campaign, my prediction is anywhere from $40 to $60.

I'm excited for it too, mostly because everytime we see a trailer or ad for it, my soon to be 12 yo daughter says "Oh cool, we're getting that game, right?"

She also said, after seeing the Metal Gear V multiplayer "Woah, this game is so awesome! Too bad there's so much killing, but the rest of it looks cool."

Can we safely call it "my first 3rd person shooter" without meaning it as a put down? Or a shooter for girls?

I think a shooter for girls isn't a good term since it would imply that other shooters aren't for girls.

But I do really, really like that this game is not only low violence and visually attractive, but Nintendo's made a point of showcasing a lot of female player characters. The lead character for the single player campaign is a girl, and a lot of the player models look like girls.

Shooters have generally pitched themselves at men and have been not necessarily presented as boys-only but have made few concessions to the idea that women might want to play them, too. It's interesting to see Nintendo buck this trend and, at least so far, market this as a shooter for all ages and genders.

I really want to see the Splatoons (Splatoonites?) as Amiibos and added to Smash Brothers.

I'm very excited to get my hands on Splatoon! It's one of the brightest lights in gaming, for me. My one concern is that being a UK Goodjer may impact on my ability to game with this fine community. Either my friends list needs updated, or more UK Goodjers need a Wii U!

Sounds like the same thing that Uncharted: Golden Abyss on the Vita does -- and it's really effective.

I look at this game like taking murder-themed paintball (COD) and taking way the murder theme. I'm all for that. Hopefully it has strong online MP.

I appreciate all these things about Nintendo, and it's why we've stuck with Nintendo for the kids for all these years. My girls are really a part of the Wii generation, and I hope that gender equal games will inspire them to seek out and/or create those kinds of games in the future as well.

Wheeeee excitement etc.

I will take one ticket to the hype train, please! This was the best only thing capable of making me feel anything at all at E3.

Are people following the NA tumblr account? Looks like there will be plenty of info coming in from there.

This post seems to have been deleted along with the associated image of a Japanese version stats page:

Follow-up report! Our researchers are now reporting that the squid creatures hanging out in the plaza are actually players who live elsewhere but gather here via Miiverse! We’re also learning that it’s apparently quite important to take note of what other players are wearing. Sweet deal!

Added to faves. Splatoon has gone from "meh" to one I'm most excited for.

All it took was a silly tower O' shops to buy and collect stuff.

I hope there's a demo. I'm interested, but my "no aiming with thumb sticks" rule means this is a no-go, but I'd like to try it and make sure they didn't come up with a way around the aiming problem.

Aiming with the wii remote? Did they talk about control schemes at all outside of what was demoed?

They might be keeping that info close to the chest until they've finalized what does and does not work. However, if I recall, launching your character across screen uses the touchpad, though I imagine they can display that info on the television, so...

A video of the roller was posted on the tumblr account today. Looks like that will be a great weapon to humiliate people by literally rolling over them. Sometimes the daily updates make me worried that every thing is going to be a bit samey, and sometimes they show something that makes me quite hopeful for this game. Watching the tumblr account is such a rollercoaster ride!

God, I really hope this is Nintendo's April release.

I'm expecting May.

Have they announced if there'd be clan features?

Everything I'm seeing (wikipedia, ign) is saying May.

Do they say May 31st by any chance? Thus far the only release window given was Spring 2015, and I believe May is typically viewed as the end of Spring, with June through August being summer, etc.

If it's May that's fine, too. Thus far April and May are both looking pretty empty. I was just hoping for sooner rather than later. Seriously though, we're due for another Direct and I'm guessing it'll focus on Splatoon.

I'm betting May as well.

Also, this game had a huge line at PAX East this year, so we never got a chance to try it. But that's a really good sign of healthy interest. Hopefully they put out a demo on the eShop before release, as I'm mostly interested to know how the game controls more than anything else.

Hearing that it was playable at PAX East was the one thing that had me REALLY cursing about not making it this year.

You probably didn't miss much. We walked quickly from the queue line to the Nintendo booth first thing on Sunday and the line was already capped when we got there.

All for a dead console, eh?

Does anyone know if it will have a pause feature?
