Yeah, I can't imagine getting nearly as much out of A Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, and A Game of Thrones without knowing the backstory at least a bit. Is it required? Absolutely not. TWD does a very competent job of catching you up. GoT is probably the hardest pill to swallow because there are so many houses and factions going on--but even that is do-able because they take a step back from the fight for the throne and just focus on more immediate, smaller issues that the House Forrester is dealing with.
I´m popping in here to get something off my chest:
Am in chapter 3 of episode 4, and have just arrived at my destination. I friggin LOVE this series! It´s making a strong case for being one of my favorite games of the last decade, and it´s keeping me up way too late on worknights!
He was a hero, a friend, and a hero....
Agreed! It was a complete surprise for me as well - definitely my favorite Telltale game by FAR.
Just finished. Out of all them, it was probably the one with the most consistent quality from episode to episode out of all Telltale games. It had a fantastic story. It might be best story out of all of them so far.
SUPER MINOR COMPLAINT: I was a little disappointed with lack of interaction though compare to past Telltale. Some episodes felt like it was a very long cut scenes. Again, minor complaint, the game was really fantastic.
On to Game of Thrones... I'm a little scared about this one following up...
I also just finished this. It was really good!
End spoiler stuff:
Though I was cycling through a minor depressive period when I went through the last episode, so getting my emotions screwed with like that wasn't my super favorite.
Okay, so I just finished the game this exact second, and it's amaaaaaaaazing!!!! Gonna read through the entirety of the thread, but here's a summary of my own choices.
Episode 1:
As Fiona, I kept my cool, let Shade accompany me (not sure what the repercussions of that ended up being), warned Felix (I know he'd betrayed us, but still, I didn't want him *dead*), and took the Psycho mask (because it was the only one I could afford).
As Rhys, I told Loader Bot to self destruct (it seemed tactically sound at the time, but boy did I end up regretting that! Especially considering how tight we got afterwards), I trusted Sasha (I'm generally a trusting person), I chose Vaughn (because we're buddies?), and I picked the machine guns and rocket (seems like the go to choice!)
Episode 2:
As Fiona, I told Sasha to help Rhys (to balance the odds), selected the Maliwan Brand for the caravan (because it was a pretty blue), I didn't peek in Sasha's gift (seemed the respectful thing to do), and shot Finch with shock damage (on the off chance he was wearing a shield).
As Rhys, I kept Handsome Jack a secret (didn't seem like that would foster trust), chose to go to Hallow Point (to rejoin with the girls), I brofisted Vaughn (because he's my buddy!!), and I trusted Fiona (because I'm trusting - see above - also, she's me, so...).
Episode 3:
As Fiona, I kept Athena from killing Cassius (because I didn't see the sense in more bloodshed), and let Vallory help me up (didn't seem like flipping her off would get me anywhere except earn me more trouble than I was already in).
As Rhys, I refused to work with Jack (because he's a psycho and I spent the last Borderlands game I played trying to kill him), I gave Sasha the flower (at this point, I was totally shipping Rhys and Sasha), and I refused to let go of Sasha (see previous statement!).
Episode 4:
As Fiona, I honored Scooter as a space cowboy (although "Catch a ride" was a close second), I let the tour group get vaporized (which wasn't very nice of me, but hey), and I shot the innocent diamond-pony (oops!).
As Rhys, I claimed to search my database (didn't think I'd gain anything by admitting that Handsome Jack WAS IN MY HEAD...), I knocked Yvette out, and I rejected Hyperion (well, duh, they're an evil corporation, and my time on Pandora has changed me).
Episode 5:
As Fiona, I shot Finch (that guy is bad news), I agreed to play Bad Cop (Rhys just isn't credible as Bad Cop), I shipped Rhys and Sasha (see above!).
As Rhys, I kept Jack imprisoned (which probably is going to come back to bite me in the butt, I instantly regretted it), I confessed to crushing on Sasha (twice apparently).
That ending though... I'm ready for Tales from the Borderlands 2!!!
Edit: I almost forgot a super important choice in episode 5 I totally agonized over:
My Vault Team!! Athena and Zero seemed obvious choices because they were experienced. I didn't want August because of his shady past and I didn't want him to mess things up between Sasha and Rhys (silly right?). So in the end, I was torn on who to pick for my third. I almost picked Felix. Almost. I didn't have enough money for a "mystery mercenary" which is too bad because guessing from the shadows, Lilith might've been an option and she's my fave Borderlands character ever. I wasn't extremely fond of Springs having spent so little time with her, and didn't think she could help me much in battle. In the end, I picked Cassius, which ended up being fun, seeing Gortys go all "hadouken".

I think there is a connection.
I'm with Shadout at this point. I would've been happy to simply select a few dialog options and actions here and there. The QTEs? They can go die in a fire. I'm in it for the story and the characters, not the gameplay.
As for the "mystery" in episode 5:
Claptrap?!?! Well played, Telltale, well played...
In other words, I am now caught up with the thread!
Not sure I am with myself
I want more choices, and chances to alter the story. Not more QTEs, they could be removed entirely.
I'm fine with different games placing themselves on the spectrum between pre-determined story and creating your story, so have nothing against Tales all, it probably did have the best delivered story in a Telltale game yet. But Game of Thrones focus on choices over story was good too.
Would be best to have a coherent great story with lots of meaningful choices. Just seem that much harder to achieve.
Played the first two chapters. Really fun game so far. The only thing I didn't like is having to go to a web site to see my choices.
Just finished part 3. Favorite part is when I told the robot someone was sleeping.
One thing I'm not sure about is the quick time events. Some seem like they might be impossible but I'm not sure.
For example
There is a part where you jump a gap and then fall. Sasha falls also and is grabbing your legs. I failed the event but didn't die. Turned out that we were just a few feet off the ground. We get a little scene that plays off the fact we fell a few feet.
If that even is winnable what happens if you pull yourself up?

I'm pretty sure that event is not winnable otherwise the comical effect might be lost.
It was awesome.
Done with chapter 4.
Favorite moments were with Scooter and the robot after telling her to hold tight.
I was surprised only 20% gave Scooter a hug at the end. He was a hero in my book. I don't think he is really dead.
All done. Loved the game. Chapter five was the weakest for me but still good. I would rank this somewhere between The Walking Dead and Fable. I haven't played Game of Thrones or Minecraft yet.
Team picks
My team was Athena, Claptrap,Felix, and Spring. Felix was a no show but he left us 9 million dollars. Claptrap was his replacement. I couldn't pick my favorite vault hunter Zero because I never told him I was a vault hunter. Man I was just about to type vault dweller, to much fallout.
Athena gave giant Gortys a shield which we used mainly to block but we got some attacks in also. Claptrap gave Gortys a bunch of missiles that almost killed us but we got some hits in on the monster. Spring gave us rockets so we could do boosted attacks.
I think everybody gets the finger guns and giant sword attacks. I'm not sure where the giant sword came from though. Rhys gives us the finger guns.
I was sad when this person died
Loader Bot Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Then they came back like the cat that wouldn't die. I'm glad they were back but it felt kind of cheap.
The game ended as I expected. I liked it and didn't like it. I liked it because it was nice. I didn't like it because it was such a standard ending.
Late to the party but I picked this up in the Steam Christmas Sale and just finished it.
Loved it. I think of it more as a TV show than a game to be sure. Despite the ability to make decisions it felt much more like passive entertainment than a 'game' but that in no way diminished my enjoyment.
My final team was
Athena - seemed like she would have the experience
Zer0 - because I want to be Zer0 when I grow up
Springs - seemed like a mechanic would be handyI skipped:
August - too unreliable
Felix - because I shot him and there is no way I would take that traitor anyway
Mystery vault hunter - didn't have the money
Cassius - is it wrong that he reminds me of Dr Zaius from Planet of the Apes?
My favourite bits:
- the title sequences – I loved the choice of music for almost all of these. The Armageddon style visuals in the title sequence for Chapter 4(?) was perfectly complemented by the Aerosmith-esque song
- final fight with the Power Rangers style bridge setup and the combos
- the finger gun fight – prove that if you take a stupid joke far enough it becomes awesome
- that scene where Sasha is clinging to your legs and then ends up falling....to the floor a few feet down
- the heroic loyalty of LoaderBot
Favourite chapter title: Atlas Mugged
Edit - definitely worth a double post
Heck yeah! It always warms my heart to see other people have enjoyed this one as much as I did! Much of the favorite bits you mentioned were special moments for me too. And I fully agree on the soundtrack, it adds lots of flavor and all the tracks were picked with care.
Guess I know what I'm listening to this morning!
9/10, would buy and play again.
This is a game that's been on the pile for some time now. Playing through the first episode is how I spent my evening. So good, and I love how so much from the Borderlands games has been incorporated into the TTG version. I can't tell you how big a charge I got out of being able to pick up loot.
Oh you're in for quite the ride. Enjoy it, Concentric!
I still go back and watch through the episode intro sequences from time to time on youtube. So good
Funny that this popped up. I've had it sitting to the side for a while as well. I'd finished the first episode ages ago, but tonight jumped into the second (after replaying the first to get my bearings) and was reminded why this was such a great choice for TellTale to do.
I'm so glad this thread popped up. I've been meaning to post about this game for a week now. My wife and I have been playing this game for a couple of months and just recently finished it. I have to say, it's one of my favorite video game stories. I'm just really sad right now that it's over and I really want to know what happens to them. The atmosphere, the characters, the story were just really great, with some flaws that did not take away from the experience. A lot of it also had to do with the music, the Borderlands games have amazing soundtracks, and the Tales game was no different.
Such a great game.
NothingWitty was kind enough to pass a Tales key along to me in the Giveaway thread so I'm raring to give it a go this weekend!
EDIT:
Just knocked out the 1st episode.
Blown. Away.
What I really love about this game is it completely veers away from TellTale's other recent stuff. Instead of constant dread and nihilism, it is darkly comedic, cartoonish and feels somewhat low-stakes. Or...low stakes in comparison to trying to take care of a young child in the midst of a violent zombie apocalypse. TellTale really leans into that for this game. Instead of having to stress and wrack your brain/constitution before making a decision that could end in death, here you choose the most ridiculous option to see the outcome. Its pretty ingenious.
Do we know if there will be a second season of this yet?

I've been sacrificing chickens ever since I finished. But no sign from the loas yet.
Bummer. People on other message boards seem to have given up the ghost of another season. They point out that TTG usually announce next seasons somewhat soon after the other seasons end, and at this point it has been a year or so since TftBL ended.
There's another company involved this time, so they need to fit anything they do around what Gearbox has planned for future Borderlands games. It seemed like the first season was a huge success, so I'd be willing to bet that if there isn't another season within a few years, I'll eat all the hats I own.
Fair warning, I don't own any hats.
Yeah, wouldn't be surprised to see it sometime shortly after Borderlands 3.
If there is a second season, I hope it still revolves around the same characters. I really liked them

They were pretty great, except I was kind of hoping for a romance between them. Still really curious about what happened to them.
