Star Wars: The Force Awakens Catch All

Just saw it! Man, what a great movie. Loved it!

Just got back. That was a Star War alright. Only better acted, directed and scripted, with a plot that made a modicum of sense. Definitely recommended, even to non fanatics.

Yeah, my wife got dragged to it along with my sister-in-law and I. Her response afterward was 'That was way better than the last Star Wars movies I went to with you. Actually enjoyable this time.'

My wife, who is a casual sci fi fan and NEVER sees anything more then once is seeing it again with me on Monday.

That was a twist all right, but the reveal of Supreme Leader JarJar was just cruel. I didn't think we could hate him more.

Just got back, had a lot of fun with it. It felt more Star Wars than anything from the last 3 movies and a worthy successor to the original trilogy. Curious to see where it goes. Now to find the spoiler thread.

IMAX vs XD...

I'm glad I went for a comparison, but in the future I'll be sticking with the less expensive, closer, noisier IMAX theater except for HFR movies, which can only be seen at one of the XD theaters in Tucson. If there are any more HFR movies, that is. To me, the advantages of the XD theater are just outweighed by the visual negatives: smaller, dimmer screen and the distracting occasional RealD ghosting.

It's funny you say that because I avoid IMAX 3D because of the ghosting. Just tilt your head 15 degrees and you will start seeing double (for some reason I watch movies with my head tilted, don't know why). RealD uses a kind of polarization that isn't effected by your head angle. You can watch lying down and it will still work.

It puzzled me, too. IMAX 3D uses horizontal and vertical polarization, while RealD uses circular polarization. However, I don't tilt my head when I'm watching a movie in a theater, so the distinction shouldn't matter to me. I really don't know where the ghosting came from, and it was very infrequent, but it was sure annoying.

Took my parents yesterday, and they enjoyed it, especially the music.

Before the movie, one of the trailers was this:

There was a Hearthstone one, too.

I want the games that are promised by Blizzard's trailers. If only the games actually lived up to this.

This was much better than I had expected. Really liked it.
Their desire to turn everything Starwarsish up to 11 got too much from time to time, but since that was part of my expectation it didn't bother me much overall.

Except the Jar-Jar Bings reveal obviously.

Oh cool, that soon!

Day one perch.

Just think: if you've survived not getting spoiled by families and friends so far, it's smooth sailing after New Year's. Unless you have family who gets together for Arbor Day. Or St. Patrick's Day. Or...you know, you're better off not talking to family for a while just to be safe.

BB8 is Elmo

And now BB-8 is ruined.

If that's bad for ya, try being scared of a guy whose name sounds like you're in the middle of saying "snow cone".

Saw it a second time this weekend. All shows at the theater (large multiplex) were sold out for the rest of the day. This movie's going to bring in some unbelievable numbers.

Anyway, still enjoyed it immensely. Maybe even more. Adam Driver's performance is incredible and both Daisy Ridley and John Boyega do a great job as well. I get goosebumps as soon as I read the opening sentence of the crawl ..

Mild spoilers so moved to the spoiler thread.

Multiple spoilers in there, Farley. Maybe move it to the spoiler thread?

I finally got to see the movie last night.

All I wanted was -
1. This to be a Star Wars movie - Check
2. It would entertain me - Check
3. It would be a "fun" movie - Check

That last one was important. I don't expect all movies to be "fun". What I mean by fun is that the movie is an event, that it makes me smile, maybe throughout. I want some ups and downs. I expect very few movies to be "fun" and in fact I can name more fun movies than movies I expected to be so before I watched them. It's a high standard for me.

I could pick this movie apart. It wouldn't be hard. I'm not a J.J. Abrams fan at all, I think he's overrated as a director. I walked out of the theater smiling. Not like Phantom Menace smiling where I was so excited there was a Star Wars movie again but I felt a certain unease which quietly set in over the course of a few hours as I started to think about the movie. The more I thought about it the more I liked it. Yeah, it has its flaws but every movie does.

One thing I really appreciate? Like the original Star Wars I had something to like about every character, even the bad guys. The jury is still out on Supreme Leader because we know so little about him and I may be more neutral on Hux or Nux or whatever his name was than is fair. I liked Kylo Ren and I liked that he is not Vader-lite. He is his own character. I fell in love with Finn in the trailers and while he is not quite what I expected I rooted for him the whole way. I liked Rey, Poe, BB-8. All of them. If I was still a kid I'd want their action figures.

Phasma is to this new saga what Boba Fett was to the old. Discuss.

The villain's entire backstory is a "mild" spoiler? Now that's a spoiler policy I can get behind!

Yes, you called it, Java - Phasma is the new Fett.

On screen for 3 minutes across two movies before falling into a giant toothed vagina? Bit of a waste of Gwendoline Christie if that happens.

Looks like Lucas didn't like this movie

What an ass

I particularly love this line -

"At one point he said that filmmakers in the Soviet Union had more freedom than their counterparts in Hollywood, who, he maintained, “have to adhere to a very narrow line of commercialism.”

Really, he is the one who practically invented commercialism within movies. Now he is complaining that is how Hollywood operates?

Whether you like this new movie or not, I can safely say it stands above any of the prequels.

If the prequels hadn't been such garbage, perhaps I'd care about his opinion. But honestly. He sold the property to Disney. Can't he at least be graceful about it?

I guess we can all breathe a sigh of relief that he sold Lucasfilm then right?
