Marvel Media

I think it was a good call to keep the MCU films consistent. Wright's style with his quick jump cuts, freeze frames, and flash backs are so unique it probably would not have felt like a Marvel film - which is fine if it was a standalone project. My guess though is that Ant Man is on tap to be an Avenger down the road and Marvel wanted to start seeding that in this film. Imagine a Thor or Cap cameo in an Edgar Wright movie.

I'm a huge fan of his movies, but imo they always fall apart in the third act also - just in a different way from the conventional Hollywood blockbusters.

Trying some indirect thread necromancy there? :p

How did you find that? I swear sometimes it would be better for me to just CTRL+F through the Track tab.

A Google or Bing search with "site:gamerswithjobs.com" at the beginning will get much, much better results than the built-in search here.

It's official: Benedict Cumberbatch to play Doctor Strange.

Okay, they could do worse.

Anyone else getting the feeling that casting for comic book movies is turning into an arms race?

I don't know... the man struggles to pronounce "penguin". How is he going to handle Hoggoth, Agamotto, Ikthalon, etc... :p

I'm curious to see what the future casting is like for main characters. DC is buying up stars for their movies but I've always felt that was because DC is the weaker of the two when it comes to making movies people want to see so they need star power to draw in the audience whereas Marvel is counting on the name and shared universe/pedigree to drive people in.

That theory is shot to hell, though, if the next two or three major protagonists are all hot actors.

With both Doctor Strange and the Suicide Squad (great band name), the producers are trying to draw audiences to a less well-known franchise with more attractive stars. However in general, I agree with bnpederson that DC feels a bit behind and is trying to catch up by spending more on bigger stars. I'm not sure if it's still the case, but at one point Will Smith was the top-grossing actor in the world; DC is certainly hoping he'll give them a leg up.

Indeed, and yet I feel Will Smith is kinda wasted playing Deadshot.
Oprah as Amanda Waller is almost perfect though, of course CCH Pounder voiced her in the cartoon and she could definitely play her I think.

But if Will can throw himself into the part like Jada does on Gotham, dayum.

Ryan Reynolds will play Deadpool.

Meh.

The role he was born to play... Hopefully the demographic obsessed studio execs won't step in to muck it up.

I've felt that Marvel has been grabbing recognizable names, but also making sure they're at least fitting for that role. For the most part, at least. Whether this trend continues I'm not sure, but star power only seems to be part of what they're going for. After all, was Tom Hiddleston really a well known actor before Thor? And I'd say Thor is what turned Chris Hemsworth into a break out star.

DC's strategy seems... odd. But, I've been wrong about what actors would be a good fit before, so I'll wait and see.

I'm indifferent. I know that he can do eccentric and brilliant very well, and I know nothing about Doctor Strange, but there's an air of typecasting about this that I'm not completely satisfied with.

Yeah, that's my reaction too. I'm sure he'll do a fine job with it, but it just feels like it could be another Sherlock/Khan sort of role for him.

Yeah. I feel like it was an opportunity to create another new star, or elevate a great Latino or Middle Eastern actor to center stage. Instead, we get one of the guys who's in everything, not exactly whitewashing a role, but potentially playing it to its most common denominator.

They hit it out of the park with RDJ as Stark. Everything else is just trying to maintain that excellence.

I'm fine with Cumberbatch. He wasn't in the running ever but I was always hoping they'd cast Chiwetel Ejiofor as Strange.

I'd say that Hiddleston may have been an even more inspired choice. That said, Loki and Strange are two very different characters, despite the commonality of magic between them.

Casting a large side of beef as Thor was a good call, too.

Grade A, Prime Australian beef.

We should probably toss in Mark Ruffalo as Banner and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow as two other inspired casting choices. (The surprise brilliance of Ruffalo outweighs the genius of the RDJ casting by a hair, for me at least.)

And Fury was always going to be Samuel L. Jackson.

Really, Marvel has been either extremely shrewd or extremely lucky with their major casting.

I was really surprised by Ruffalo. I haven't been a huge fan of his work over the years, but I thought he did a good job with Banner.

I think all of the Avengers casting was pretty good, but RDJ and Ruffalo are a notch above the rest. Both of them elevated characters I barely care about into personal favorites.

Oh, and Hemsworth is pretty spot on too. That's a good reason for me to quote this gif right?
