Media Consumption and Political Polarization

In a weak attempt to preserve the Ferguson thread from bald conservative derailment, I'll use this platform to say that I'm still not sure it's fair to compare liberal leaning news sources like MSNBC with the propaganda arm of the far right GOP.

Fox News is as much news as mtv is music or TLC is learning.

I think it's fair to compare them as they are both slanted and poor sources for reliable news. If you want to argue that one of them does that worse (better?) then you won't get an argument from me.

I'm speaking specifically about MSNBC vs. Fox. I generally trust the other outlets. (NPR and CNN)

Yeah I'm with Farscry. If anything, NPR skews statist, not liberal. Robear has a boat load of links regarding NPR's proven neutrality. CNN is just poor reporting, its definitely not slanted left.

There is an argument for comparing Fox News and MSNBC, but I also tend to side with OG that the comparison only works in theory. In reality, the scope of control they have make them different animals.

I'm a big NPR listener and for TV news I watch Al Jazeera because I believe both to be very non-partisan. I still get most of my news from print media which moves me even further away from having "sound bites" dictate my information. I do not actually know anyone who uses Fox News as their primary source of news (even my conservatives friends feel it to be GOP propaganda) but I have a feeling that such people would not talk to me regardless.

Fox News has done some serious damage American society; but I also feel that if they were not doing that damage someone else would be because their is serious money to be made in news propaganda.

I watch Fox when a family gathering is imminent just so I can prepare myself for whatever crazy sh*t I'm going to hear. I have relatives who are huge Fox fans. I swear, sometimes I have to remind myself that I'm not watching a segment of The Colbert Report...but no, it's the "news".
