Rebel Galaxy - Starshipping Catch-All

Pages

From the makers of the Torchlight series comes Rebel Galaxy.

As the commander of an immensely powerful star destroyer in the lawless Rift, players will fight pirates, explore anomalies, form alliances with aliens, scavenge wreckage, mine asteroids and discover artifacts.

Players can choose to become or be a mix of a “roguish do-gooder, crafty space-trader or power-hungry privateer.” Commanders can advance on to better craft with earned credits, as well as upgrading their ship’s weapons and defenses. The announcement trailer teases the game’s various ships and characters. The footage also offers a look at the trade and negotiation components and frantic space combat.

Hehehehe. "Negotiate"

I'm absolutely putting this on my list of games to watch. Everything these guys have done, I've loved (except Hellgate: London I guess, but I never played that) and I also really enjoy games about capital ship battles. Sounds like a match made in heaven.

Like the Firefly music.

Cooool, spacey shooty ships!

The Firefly music caught my attention too.

Pretty much what everyone here already said. I normally don't pay much attention to distant releases these days (not in this age of massive piles and new games every week), but this one has my interest. I like the idea of a space sim not based on something with "Star" in the title. Almost looks like space-themed 18th-19th century sea battles ("broadsides"). Also has an Artemis vibe from those non-combat space scenes. I'm pulling for it, let's hope my pile problem is under control by the time it releases.

While it doesn't have Star in the title, it does have a COLLECTION of stars in the title, if you think about it... just saying...

I'm so on board it's silly.

They're not actually calling your ship a star destroyer are they? In a game called rebel galaxy? Presumably a long time ago, far far away?

Nevertheless I loved torchlight so color me interested.

So does that mean no chance of Torchlight 3? Is Runic Games kaput?

Does look pretty cool. I always liked the ship combat in STO. This looks a little more twitch and a little more variety which is nothing but win in my book!

Absolutely not. Only Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer left.

Runic Games is still going. They've been pretty quite, though. I wonder what they're working on.

They're working on new double post technology!

This game seems like something I could really like. I'll have to keep my eye on it.

Looks cool, as seen in the space thread. Hopefully it does deserve its own thread.

Yay for more space games!

A space game designed for a controller? Colour me interested.

That's not so unusual. Enemy Starfighter, for example, excells with a controller.

Sign me up.

Eh? These days I think it'd be big news if there was a space game that wasn't designed for a controller. That seems to be the baseline that most of them are aiming for.

Maybe you're right, I don't follow the genre all that closely, but the chatter around these games and Elite in particular suggests that controller is far from optimal.

Elite is more or less designed for controller as well - Its what many of the developers themselves often use. Its Mouse + Keyboard that is lacking currently.

Anyone, besides Veloxi, have any experience with this yet. Seems the thread has been dead awhile.

I managed to snake a key for the remainder of the press preview weekend via the RB twitter feed. I'll post my opinions here once I've had some time with it, but I'm very stoked to get home from work.

Wait, when is this coming out again? I've been curious but haven't heard anything in a while.

No date has been set. They just did a temporary key giveaway so fans and streamers would try it.

There have been more LP's showing up this week. It's getting very favorable comments. Lot's of expressions of the "Firefly vibe", in large part due to the music, I think.

Downloading now, but not sure when I'll get to it. Stupid life plans intruding on my happy fun time.

You better play it soon, the key becomes inactive on the 18th.

Yeah, I knew the key was only good through the weekend.

I've got about three hours with the game now. So far, I'm really enjoying what I'm seeing. I think the less simmy nature of it will make it appealing to me for a longer time than Elite Dangerous. However, I still think these games are prone to the problem of too much repetition. I know RG is still incomplete, but like ED the lack of variation can make the game grow stale over time. I haven't been back to ED in several months, so that may have changed.

But I'm liking RG and hope it evolves. I'm not a huge fan of sandbox games, so I hope there's an overarching narrative (aunt Juno?) that will help move the game along. I don't even mind a proper ending vs. endless sandboxing.
