I was a huge fan of Twin Peaks when it came out in the early 90s. There was something about it that really spoke to me, an eeriness and quirkiness that was unavailable in any other medium at the time. It was a joy to watch.
How much of a fanboy am I? I got the diary, Coop's tapes, the "visit Twin Peaks" guide, the DVD set (but not yet the blu ray.) If TP was a game...well, one of my favorite games of all time is Alan Wake... if you play through it and don't get a feeling of Twin Peaks, you might want to do some brain games on a DS or something. Back when the show originally aired, I took notes with pen and paper, and would lead a small group of students in a discussion following each show. I had it bad.
So now I'm hearing that the series is coming back after 25 years... picking up 25 years after the events of the season finale. It'll show up in 2016, for 9 episodes on Showtime, and I'm also hearing that they will broadcast to a youtube channel.

There's a festival?
Aaaaand that restaurant chain named "Twin Peaks" might have damn fine coffee but I don't think it has anything to do with the show.
Anyway, I reserve the right to edit this post like crazy and add more stuff to make it a better OP.
If you're a fan, I'd love to hear your reaction to the hype!
EDIT - Where are they now?
I'm pretty sure that Deadly Premonition is actually the Twin Peaks game.
Excited but skeptical. Hard to recapture the magic of the TV series given just how unique and unexpected it was when it originally aired. I genuinely had moments watching the original where I thought to myself: "I can't believe this is actually happening on a network television series." Alas, television has changed quite a bit since then.
That said, it looks like I'm getting Showtime in 2016.
Given how influential it was, and how much different TV is today than when Twin Peaks aired, it seems like disappointment is inevitable.

not really
I'm psyched!! Even if it fails to live up to the first series and gets overhyped I'll probably still enjoy it at some level.

I've heard about that game, but never really watched a video about it until you posted this. I want my time back. ;-)
That's how a lot of people feel about Twin Peaks.
Seriously, Deadly Premonition is Twin Peaks run through a Japanese filter.
It's enough to get me to sign up for Showtime when it comes. I will enjoy just watching what they come up with.
Man.
We rewatched the original series in its entirety about two years ago. There's a lot to like about it, but I think the wheels kind of came off in the last season once they revealed the killer.
I'm going to be at least moderately interested in anything that Lynch puts his name on, and I love that he's getting the money to make this thing, but I feel like I would have been more excited about a truly new project. I'm just not sure whether Twin Peaks needs to be revisited.
I'm excited by this news. I staunchly refused to watch Twin Peaks for ages because so many people gave it such high praise (similar reason why I don't "like" the Beatles). Once I finally started watching it, though, I've been hooked. I have about 10 more episodes left in the series, and can see what you guys mean about it falling part after the big reveal. But still, it is so weirdly awesome!

Yes, the "Twin Peaks" restaurant is something different (it's a Hooters clone) but in Atlanta we have The Bookhouse Pub, which is named after "The Bookhouse Boys" in Twin Peaks. They have drinks named "The Log Lady", the "Dale Cooper" and the "Laura Palmer" and things like that.
DanB and I went to a non-stop screening of the whole thing for the 20th anniversary. I have the souvenir coffee mugs to prove it.

Do you happen to have easy access to a pic of your mug? (Wait... not your mug. Your coffee mug!)

Sorry, big picture. Uploaded from phone.

There's an obvious reason for that. They were essentially forced against their will to reveal the killer by the studio, since the original plan was to never solve the mystery. Solving it by basically going
"f*ck you, a ghost did it"
was self-sabotage because they knew they no longer had creative control of the show and were walking away. That's why Lynch isn't credited with directing any episodes after that point until the finale, and Frost's writing credits all but disappear. And in retrospect, there's an obvious difference in the quality of any episode that Lynch didn't direct. So, with him apparently in charge of the whole series this time, hopefully things will stay high for all 9 episodes.
And I'm also skeptical because television sure has changed since it originally aired it was so unlike anything else, and kind of let down because I don't know why he stopped making new movies. But at the same time, Lynch is certainly not the type of person to do a project for the money, so I have some faith that he wouldn't have done this unless he truly believes he has something to do with this world.
This is great news to me! My wife and I watched the whole television series for the first time on Netflix about a year ago and I appreciate the groundbreaking format and style of Twin Peaks considering when it originally aired. I agree with previous comments about the return possibly being a disappointment to many (hopefully not!), as there is a lot to live up to.
I am interested to see how the hype/marketing machine spins the 2016 return (Please, please no: "The show that was Lost, before Lost was Lost").
Idle thumbs folks are doing a rewatch podcast
As a fan of Lynch's work since a young teenager I'm eagerly anticipating this return. What I'm not looking forward to are the audience responses. While there have been some great TV shows in recent years, I still don't think most people appreciate ambiguity, surrealism, and symbolism. Take the ending of True Detective for example... it was the perfect modern Lovecraftian/Ligotti ending, but many fans seem to be disappointed. If you come at Twin Peaks with some knowledge of the tarot, Buddhist mysticism and transcendentalist meditation I believe you get a completely different read of the events and scenes in each of the Lynch directed episodes. Apparently a lot of people are upset with the ending of Season 2... I don't get that, I thought it fit. I suspect this new series is going to continue in that direction and a lot of people are going to be disappointed.
Kuddles speaks truth. The middle of season 2 was dire. Proper daytime soap garbage. Remember Evelyn? Dick?
Fire, Walk With Me on the other hand was masterful. Utterly terrifying.

If anything, the wave of collectively over-analysing media via the internet makes them appreciate it even less. I've always said that if almost any Kubrick movie was released today, the reception would be a bunch of complaining over what they feel are plot holes while missing the point.
Almost every article about this includes speculation as to whether the new series will give them "the answers we've been waiting for". You would think by now people would know what to expect from Lynch. I don't have to guess at this: Anyone watching the new episodes in anticipation of closure will no doubt be furious by the end of them.
Personally I considered Twin Peaks closed. I found the whole story to be sufficiently Lovecraftian that we could never expect our heroes to "win".
Did anyone see the 'Dual Spires' episode of the Psych tv show? It was an episode-long homage to Twin Peaks. Quite amusing if you're a fan of Psych, and possibly if you're a fan of Twin Peaks. I should really watch the show some time, though my wife and I got stuck on the first or second episode. I think I liked it more than she did.

It was a great episode. I've never seen Twin Peaks, but I'll be watching along with Remo and Rodkin for their rewatch, so expecting I'm in for a few "Ooooh" moments in hindsight.
