Star Wars Rebels Catch-All

I would watch Rebels and skip Clone Wars, but that's just me.

Looks like I'll be watching some Star Wars.

But Clone Wars has Ahsoka!

If you didn't catch it or if it hasn't been mentioned they do call Hera over the comms on Yavin.

Thank you. Yes. And they're paging General Sindula, not captain. (Implying a promotion.) But even then, the audio is a bit muddled.

I just hope that the crew of the Ghost didn't die in the battle at the end of R1. That would break my heart.

I kinda think they will die. What future do they have? The OT does not have them in there and Ashoka is probably more popular and was not tied into Rogue 1 even as a reference or mention like Chopper and Hera were. The jedi at least are going to die or go into exile. Hera and the rest of the crew might make it though.

I expect terrible things in store for Kanan, Ezra, and the Mandelorians. Maybe if the story led Kanan to renounce the Force altogether he might've had a future but I don't see that happening.

Renounce the Jedi, maybe, but not the force. Neither Kanan, Ezra, nor Ahsoka are truly Jedi.

The only reason Luke can be considered a Jedi is because Ghost Yoda and Ghost Kenobi told him he was.

Really you don't need Clone Wars to enjoy Rebels.

It gives you some background on a couple recurring characters but that's it. There are a few cool moments in Clone Wars that make it stand well on its own. But if you're interested in Rebels just watch it. IMO Rebels is the far superior show.

I watched 2 full seasons without seeing Clone Wars and I never felt lost. The only strange thing was Darth Maul being alive.

If you do watch Clone Wars you have to use a guide and watch episodes out of order so it makes some damn sense. This is a huge issue for the first 3 seasons. And then 2-3 episodes in season 4-5 are out of order too

I enjoyed Clone Wars a lot, but it took a bit for it to find it's legs. I think a lot of people dislike the early parts where Ahsoka is just a kid, but it really pays off later.

The last season that was after the on-air cancellation kind of left me underwhelmed, but that might just have been the fact that there was a Jar Jar arc, yet no Ahsoka.

There are a lot of things in Rebels that make more sense if you know the Clone Wars backstory. I'm specifically thinking about the importance of some of the clones that pop up in Rebels and become important, but there are other things, too.

Not that you'd even really know what you're missing if you hadn't watched Clone Wars, but it made it nicer for me having the full history of those guys.

Yes and yes. You'll never look at a clone trooper the same way again (in a good way)

Presented for (I think) the 4th time: Clone Wars Ahsoka episodes.

There are good episodes beyond this list but the Snips episodes are surprisingly great.

Sweet, I will probably start Clone Wars tonight.

Was gonna use this guide.

Should be good right?

This one. Reddit one is a lot different and I am pretty sure the s5-6 ones made more sense.

Is the Dark Disciple book good? It's on the list. I think I downloaded it from the library awhile back in audio, but never got to it.

Clone Wars is the true story of how Anakin went from happy to angry. It truly is really great storytelling and, unlike many cartoons, there is actual character growth (especially Anakin and Ahsoka (who is my favourite character in Star Wars now, just above Mara) ) over the entire series.

Thanks!

Just found this thread!

I watched all three seasons of Rebels and have a love/hate relationship with the series.

I love:

Spoiler:

Season 2 finale with the Rebels, Ahsoka, Maul, and Vader all in the mix.

The episode where Sabine learns to use the dark saber/sword and grows as a person.

I love the opening to season 3 with Ezra utilizing some aspects of the dark side and becoming a complex character

But I hate:

Spoiler:

Chilidish and filler episodes with the most recent being the Chopper vs Inventory droid (forget his name) standoff where it's literally a "I'm the better droid, no you're not, I am" tongue sticking out garbage.

Quickly erasing the Ezra darkside story path in like episode S03E03 when he's like, you're right, Kanan, the dark side is bad!

Bad guy shots only land when it's convenient to the story (a greater complaint I have for Star Wars as a whole

After finishing Rebels, I decided I wanted to explore the rest of the new cannon universe. I picked up the Marvel Comics series Star Wars and Darth Vader. I highly recommend them. I was going to start watching Clone Wars but I might delay that given some of the comments in this last page confirming some of my suspicions and aversions to the Clone Wars series.

Any other recommendations for the new Star Wars cannon?

(p.s. I read many novels of the old legends series such as the Thrawn series and I'm not interested in reading the old stuff).

It's too bad that you didn't enjoy the recent droid focused episode. I feel like it was supposed to be comic relief. Personally, I thought it was hilarious. AP-5 (inventory droid) makes me laugh out loud practically every time he says something. Similar to K2-SO, but with a different sense of humor.

Not sure how many in this thread are Douglas Adams fans, but AP-5 is DEFINITELY an homage to Marvin the Paranoid Android from the Hitchhiker's Guide series. If you've ever heard the song Marvin, I Love You, then you know this is undeniable. AP-5's voice is almost identical to the narrator in that song.

AP-5 is a neurotic, and clinically depressed AI, (takes one to know one), which is endearing, AND makes him a self aware AI.

Here... Check this out... So good...

Just remember that we are not the "target" audience so they do a great job of appealing to both the younger watchers and older. Not every episode can be super serious. All the episodes matter. Clone Wars is similar. People complain when there are some droid focuses episodes and stuff but the target audience is younger than the majority of us talking about it on forums.

Yeah my friend has to wait to watch episodes with his daughter. I texted him after Twin Suns and he was like can't talk until tomorrow afternoon. Doh.

+1

@Rawk, totally get the Marvin reference. HHGTTG is one of my favorite books and I actually looked up who voiced AP-5 because I knew it couldn't be Alan Rickman but I appreciated the likeness. I like AP-5 overall but that episode was beyond frustrating to me.

Awesome. Thanks!

my rankings of the new canon novels

1. Lost Stars
2. Bloodlines
3. Dark Disciple
4. Catalyst
5. Twilight Company
6. Lords of the Sith
7. A New Dawn
8. Heir to the Jedi
9. Ahsoka
10. Tarkin
11. Aftermath
12. Aftermath: Life Debt
13. Aftermath: Empire's End

Looking forward to Thrawn next week!

It's good to see Aftermath way down on your list. That's the one novel I have read and it was a meh at best.

I do a lot of audiobooks, and I can't make up my mind about the Star Wars books. They like to add a lot of sound effects in the background. Kind of distracting, and I think I'd rather the prose to stand on its own. I listen at high speed, so maybe that's what makes them kind of tiring?

If you like Rogue One, though, Catalyst makes that movie better. It's not necessary, but it's very directly linked.

There are thirteen new canon books already?

There goes any chance I had of keeping up.

More than that if you count everything.

Hell, thirteen used to cover just one arc back in the day.

Hey, there was only one of those (and I read the sh*t out of it).

I do a lot of the audiobooks too... basically I've come to love the ones narrated by Jonathan Davis and suffer through the ones done by Marc Thompson, who's clearly mega-talented but a grade-A ham.

I'm more sympathetic to the Aftermath books, and less so to Tarkin and Lords of the Sith. Just about everyone loves Lost Stars, though, justifiably.

Lost Stars is definitely one of the better canon books and a good stand alone story. Aftermath is closer to the main story line in Ep 7 and leads right into it. The first Aftermath book is mediocre at best but the following 2 are much better. I found Lords of the Sith and Tarkin to be very good as well.
