Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

December 1 – December 7

Section:

If you live in the United States, then this Monday has two significant meanings for you. The first is that the refrigerator is becoming critically low of leftover turkey and stuffing, assuming either remain at all. The second is that it is Cyber Monday, a day in which work hours are spent scouring various websites for online deals and cut prices. Few will be looking ahead to new releases in December.

Which is too bad, as the Telltale Games developed Game of Thrones finally heralds the coming of winter with its release across multiple platforms. Two years ago, high off of my first playthrough of The Walking Dead: Season One, I might have perhaps been incredibly excited for this new release. Yet after a replay of that Season 1 experience this year, watching the gameplay of Poker Night at the Inventory 2, and receiving word that the new season and The Wolf Among Us is experiencing a number of bugs and glitches across multiple platforms, I've come to wonder if Telltale needs to stop taking on so many licensed products and instead focus on making their engine work.

I imagine someone will now want to tell me how foolish I am for this feeling and that the game will surely be incredible.

I wish those grown-up someones good fortune with the performance of what will no doubt be the first good game based on George R. R. Martin's epic and gritty property, but in the meantime I'll be playing Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Each time I unlocked a Captain Toad level in Super Mario 3D World I was filled with excitement and left with a satisfactory sense of joy. When Nintendo announced that the sentient fungus man would be getting his very own game, I could hardly contain my delight. So I give this week's nod to one of my most anticipated games of the entire year.

That cute li'l guy would have flown entirely below my radar if not for this. Thanks, Chris.

sentient fungus man

Finally! It's about time that sentient fungus persons are starting to get equal representation as protagonists in games.

I passed on Persona Q so that I could buy Captain Toad. If you know me at all, that should tell you just how interested I am in Captain Toad.

The inmates are running the asylum!!!

And I love it!

Lumino City was robbed!!!

Bombing Bastards, huh? Turns out to be a Bomberman clone.

There's some awesome PC game names this week. Potatoman Seeks the Troof, Bin Weevils Arty Arcade, Neocolonialism, etc. Okay, the last one was a snoozefest. Feels like the 90's are back though, at least in terms of game names. Ultraworld is proof of that.

Lumino City looks gorgeous. I added it to my wishlist a few weeks ago, but I'll be waiting a bit to buy it. I'll definitely play it at some point, but there are a couple other games I intend to play first.

Based on how much I enjoyed the first episode of Tales from the Borderlands, I'm definitely going to be picking up Game of Thrones this week.

Up until I hit the Captain Toad section, I honestly thought this was written by Shawn (as my RSS reader deposited me past the image when loading the article). This scares me.

(I look forward to joining the Capt. Toad thread at the end of the month. That's on my xmas wish list, so I can't buy it this week. But I'm interested to see how GoT turns out in reviews and word of mouth before putting money down on the season)

Edit:

Potatoman has been out for a while I believe. This week marks the Steam debut, which only furthers the unfortunately conventional wisdom about PC gaming that a game doesn't exist unless it's on Steam.

*checks Amazon* Boo! Capt'n Toad's not out over here until the 2nd of January. Boo!

Scares you? Man, I don't even know who I am anymore!

Now that shop mentions it, it pretty much could be from Sean. Ha! Awesome.

Finally someone has released a video game based on an epic and gritty property. I sure hope the content is visceral across all SKUs. Can't wait to consume that title.

I assume you mean this:

I mean the inevitable gritty sequel, Captain Toad: Reckoning.

I'm holding out for Captain Toad: Origins.

Captain Toad: Shadow of Bowser.

Hey, he's a really fun guy...

I'll show myself out.

Damn you, you beat me to it!

I'd like to think there could be two horrible punners in this thread, but I don't think there's that mushroom.

I wonder if they'll do a 3DS Version. It sounds like something that would be fun to play on a portobello system. But maybe it would be too much truffle to convert. That's maitake anyway.

How many hours have you logged in EUIV so far?

None. Conversely, this could mean I am Nega-Sands, come from the Negaverse here to promote the greatness that is Nintendo and JRPGs.

I always suspected that you were another ClockworkHouse/Minarchist clone

I guess my Shawn-radar needs a tune-up. I didn't catch that until I read the first comment and was initially confused by how wordsmythe could inexplicably be calling Elysium by the wrong first name.

Sean! Sean! Sean!

But I'm a fan of quoting it spelled incorrectly just to annoy His Beardedness.

Wow, until today, I had never heard of Captain Toad. I learned something new today!

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker at some point, for sure.

Oops! Sorry Sean. I could have sworn I heard everyone on the podcast pronouncing it "Shawn."
