November 17 - November 23

Section:

You could spend a couple of hundred dollars on games this week and still not have picked up everything potentially worth playing off the new release list. Though Dragon Age: Inquisition is going to take the top spot on my list, and by extension the Game of the Week title, it's just scratching the surface of games released this week.

What could get lost in the shuffle, though, is that this may very well be the last great release week for the last generation of consoles. While you'll likely still see games released here and there for the PS3 and Xbox 360, their days are decidedly numbered, and the likelihood of seeing another week with several major releases for those platforms is probably not very good.

So, what else besides DA:I is coming out this week? Well, UbiSoft is looking to make everyone forget about last week's Assassin's Creed: Unity debacle with the launch of Far Cry 4. The PlayStation 4 brings us the third iteration of Little Big Planet, and with it an official campaign from my kids to buy a PS4 for Christmas. And rounding out the Xbox One and PS4 offerings is a next-gen release of Grand Theft Auto 5.

On the Nintendo side of things, Super Smash Bros. comes to the Wii U, and the 3DS offers up yet another trip round the Pokemon carnival. As for those last generation systems, I mentioned, they get Dragon Age: Inquisition and Far Cry 4 along with the better-late-than-never release of Shadow of Mordor.

If you can't find something you're interested in playing this week, then you might not be looking hard enough. Don't worry about putting it on your pile at this point, because you're going to want that to sustain you through the coming drought.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyum.

One heck of a week.

The PlayStation 4 brings us the third iteration of Little Big Planet, and with it an official campaign from my kids to buy a PS4 for Christmas.

You don't have a PS4? Huh, thought everyone went that way this gen.

inb4 the flood of Xbox One owners

Worth mentioning for those of us who liked Goat Simulator: more free DLC coming this Thursday.

Surprisingly, nothing for me this week. I never got bitten by the Pokébug, and I actually just canceled my Smash Bros. pre-order, which I'm pretty sure disqualifies me from being a True Nintendo Fan™.

LBP3 is what's putting a PS4 under the tree this year. My daughter is already anticipating it, which if you knew her you'd know how unusual that is.

Construction Simulator automatically goes on the wishlist. I'm not so deep into sims that I'll buy one on release, but I'm still interested in them.

Is there a big difference between the PS3 and PS4 versions of LittleBigPlanet, or are you all just shamelessly using your kids' interest in it to justify a PS4?

This is a big part of my justification. I'm thrilled that Toys R Us has a bundle on Black Friday that has LBP3 vs. GTA V.

I agree with the general sentiment, but let me encourage those of us with a 20+ game backlog to go ahead and take a pass on this week anyway. The coming winter makes me feel ready to curl up with one of those nice long JRPGs I've been putting off.

Sony and Microsoft seem ready to really slug it out for your Christmas dollar. I'm curious to see what deals the coming weeks hold.

I think the Slogan over at Redmond is "The Empire Strikes Back" for this holiday season.

I hated the Wii version of Smash. I like the 3DS version much more. I'm not sure what has changed in me and my life in the past 6 years, but I like Smash a lot more than I did back then.

Who knows?

The Marvellous Miss Take for me I think. Her "caught" animation is basically how I've always pictured my Garrett when things go pear-shaped.

Curious to see how Shadow of Mordor shakes out on 360, then it may go on the price-drop watch list.

One year down and still no compelling reason for me to consider an Xbone or PS4.

Monopoly Family Fun Pack was robbed..

That's because the Wii version of Smash is the low point of the series mechanically. The 3DS version is much better, so you are absolutely justified in feeling that way. Especially since I feel the same

Picking up Dragon Age tomorrow and Smash on Friday. This is surely going to be the week where my Destiny addiction begins to fizzle.

I found the 3DS version of Smash to be opaque, difficult to control, and difficult to parse visually. I expect the Wii U version to take care of the latter of those two, but I don't think much is going to make the game more friendly to newcomers.

So many games, so little time... but only Dragon Age: Inquisition is pre-loading (it would seem given that I left the house and PS3 was still on doing an uncommonly long "update".

I would be tempted to get GTA V, but I played so little of it on the 360, I can't imagine slightly better graphics are gonna make it any more compelling. So it's Dragon Age on the XBO and Far Cry 4 on Steam for when the wife is watching tv.

Pokemon and Smash Bros? Nintendo is going to have a great week, despite the DA:I madness.

So tomorrow's my birthday, and I feel like I should use that as an excuse to fully nerd out on DA:I, but I also feel like I could maybe possibly wait until Christmas.

Dragon Age Inquisition is something I will eventually pick up. Unfortunately, I haven't finished the first two yet so I'm not in any hurry to pick it up. Maybe when it's $30. Far Cry 4? Same thing, still need to finish 2 and 3, and the blood dragon game. Little big planet 3? I've never finished 2, so I'll still get it eventually.

Adventure time is also coming out for Vita I thought... I wonder why it didn't get on that list? That's probably the only one I'll buy day 1.

Finally using that free Red Box rental to see how Shadow of Mordor plays on PS3.

Very tempted to get Smash, but for now I'll settle for playing at my friend's place.

Just FYI, apparently the PS3 and 360 versions will either not implement the Nemesis system, or have a gimped version of it:

Precisely why I'm testing it out with a rental.

Fair enough, wise move.

I only mentioned it because I was considering it for PS3 as well, but because the Nemesis sounded so intriguing. Take that away and my year-old New Console Game Resistance trait kicks in.

As much as I want Dragon Age. I will hold off for now. There probably be an ultimate edition later anyway. Miku will be mine.

There was no ultimate for any of the 3 ME games, or DA2. So Bioware is 1 for their last 5 on Ultimate editions... doesn't seem likely.

I'm not sure what to expect from Dragon Age: Inquisition.

I tried playing DAO twice and never could get into for some reason. I played it originally on the 360 and skipped DA2. I have it now on the PC and I'm tempted to give it a third go and be ready for Inquisition. I like what I have seen from Inquisition but I think I'll wait for a sale. I'm deep into Skyrim and I don't think I need two massive RPGs to suck up any more of my time.

I don't have time to play the Dragon Age main story at the moment (gods damn it WoW, I really didn't need you back in my life right now), but I'm seriously considering getting it soon anyway, just for the multiplayer.

Spoiler:

Plus, who am I kidding, I'll probably end up starting the single player as well, and try to half arse my way through it, and WoW, and the half dozen other things I'm playing right now, and I'll feel dissatisfied with all of them because of it. Video games!

As much as I want Dragon Age. I will hold off for now. There probably be an ultimate edition later anyway. Miku will be mine.

edit: I think I need to save some money so I will not actually buy anything and put it on the back burner for a little bit.

Does this mean thee will be a Lara Crigger spoiler section on next week's podcast?

Only Smash Bros. for me this week. That list of releases reminds me of college when all my classes had major projects due the same week You'd think the publishers would coordinate this stuff by now, right?

Also, I'm hoping to hear some talk about Rollers of the Realm on the podcast next week. I saw that at PAX East last year and it looked like something at least Rabbit might be interested in given the combination of pinball and rock opera / RPG(?) I think.
