Portland, Oregon Meetups

The site I'm using (RSVPify) doesn't look like it's going to be great for potluck planning. I can set up a Google Sheet for that if need be.

I'm not quite sure how to deal with dietary restrictions. Usually the way that works is that people with restrictions bring their own food, or it just sort of works itself out. I've got a nephew with a severe legume allergy, and we just sort of assume that he's going to have to pack in his own meals for this sort of thing.

Alright, here we are:

Please use the rsvpify link if you plan on coming

Random aside. Is anyone here a fan of How Did This Get Made? I have a ticket to their Portland tour tomorrow because my wife can't go. I'm hoping I can find a home for it so it doesn't go to waste.

The hosts of How Did This Get Made are quite funny and you need to know exactly 0 things going in. Sure it's nice to watch the movie in question prior to a listen, but they do a good job of making things entertaining if you're not familiar. I'm totally jealous that I'm too far away to take advantage of this.

I also bought a ticket a few times including this morning but ironically didn’t because I wasn’t sure my wife would be as interested.

I’m send you a DM as well. Happy to pay your for it too

Since we're doing this, I've got a ticket to the Timbers game vs. DC today that I'm not going to be able to use since I hurt my foot. Timbers Army section. Let me know.

On the topic of International GWJ Day, here are the games I own. Putting the full list (of notable MP games) out here in case there’s something more popular you all want to play you can bring it. Feel free to bring the game, a console, whatever.

MP board games

Barenpark
Dominion
Ticket to Ride
Carcassonne
Settlers of Catan
Powergrid
Splendor

We’re a one gamer household so the only notable couch co-op / MP games I own are:

Towerfall
Sportsfriends
NBA2k
Rocket League
ARMS
NSMB U
Snipperclips
Splatoon 2
Puzzle Bobble
Puyo Puyo Tetris
SNES/NES Online
Drawful 2
Windjammers

I'll come.

In terms of games, I've been itching to run a Paranoia mission. If folks are interested, I could put together a one-shot for 6 to 12 players (the more the merrier).

I also have Star Trek: Ascendancy, still in the shrink wrap, and I've been looking for an opportunity to play that, too.

I'd love to do a game of Paranoia. I was trying to figure out how to bring Fiasco into the mix. But I didn't want to buy a copy of the old version when the new version (that I Kickstarted) is coming any month now.

Also, my wife has been on the fence about coming since she doesn't hang out here. But a Star Trek board game might lure her in.

Btw, we have ten people that have sent RSVPs so far, including myself and DSGamer and assorted partners.

Is this still on for the 19th?

Yep. We should start chatting soon about what the survey / RSVP yielded and what that means in terms of food, etc.

Ah, right! I should probably say something about all that.

We've got 9 people accepted including myself and the 2 hosts.

Nobody has mentioned any food allergies or dietary requirements.

Rsvpd for me. I didn’t see anything about a starting time?

Also, thoughts on bringing my 7 year old daughter along?

I don't have any issue with it. But that one's kind of DSGamer's call. For all I know he has hungry jaguars in the backyard or something.

Kids are tricky for us and I'll be 100% honest with why.

I personally have no problem with kids at the get together and would be happy to meet your daughter. My two concerns are this.

Would she enjoy herself and how much do we need to lock the house down?

My wife and I don't have kids, so we don't keep a very kid-friendly house. We keep a house suited to 2 busy professionals that struggle to keep things running on track as it is. So the door of our fridge or a random drawer in our buffet is likely to have our medical cannabis.

The cats kind of have the run of the place, so there are lots of cat toys and almost no human toys outside of my LEGO sets and a random Transformer (and my video games).

Beer and alcohol sits on the butcher's block. Tastefully, but we haven't made the effort to lock it in a closet yet because it's just us.

We do our best when we have friends over with kids, but I can't guarantee we won't forget something.

If you're comfortable with that and she can entertain herself or wants to participate in games, I have no problem with it.

Hungry jaguars. Called it.

I'm not really worried about anything needing to be kid-proofed or her needing entertainment. She's pretty good about that sort of stuff, and she'd be coming to play games, especially anything on the simpler side (Catan or simpler). The only thing it sounds like I'd worry about is her wanting to love the cats too much (or her just being an energetic first-grader).

I was mostly curious if it would be out of line. Not totally sure if I want to bring her or not, or if, day-of, she'd want to go hang out with a bunch of grown-ups. Thanks!

So food wise, I was thinking taco bar? Like someone brings a bunch of shells, and everyone else brings fillings.

What time are ya'll thinking? I typically work Saturday's till 5, so I may not be able to make it. I can probably get someone to cover for me and get off work at 1 or 2, though. Taco bar sure sounds like a fun idea.

I actually assumed this was going to be more of a daytime thing. Say 11 or noon to whenever people wanted to leave.

Taco bar sounds great to me.

My wife unfortunately had a death in the family so she's going to probably be out of town that weekend. As such a pot-luck type setup would work really well since I'll have half the manpower to go purchase stuff / get it organized.

I'll bring some taco meat. If someone else can bring shells/tortillas and someone else can bring some lettuce and cheese, then everyone else can bring whatever they want.

Should we just throw together a quick Google spreadsheet?

My wife will be here after all. We’ll be stocking sodas, some alcohol, etc.

Absolutely. I'll pm everyone who RSVPed as well.

Have fun this weekend everyone! We're pulled in separate directions with kiddo activities this weekend, which is why I won't be able to participate. I really enjoy a GWJ get together, hopefully I can make the next.

Sadly, I'm gonna have to work till 5, so I can't make it.

I'm interested. When you all doing it?

Looks like I won't be able to make it due to a class trip changing times tomorrow. I hope everyone has a good time, though!

Bummer. Was looking forward to seeing as many people as possible. Next time.

Too bad. We'll make this work one day.

Starting at noon.

I'll be able to be there around 3pm.
