Disgaea series Catch-All

Disgaea 5 was announced for 2015 on the PS4 and the whole world was shocked. Absolutely shocked. I had been mulling over creating a Disgaea series catch-all because we're now getting these games on a yearly basis (re-release or otherwise) and felt that there's really not that much new to talk about in individual threads.

That's a horribly backwards way to introduce this thread. How about this:

That about sums up the series.

Hey! Be thankful I didn't make the entire post animated Prinny gifs!

One is okay though.

Dood.

I seem to be more addicted to buying these games than playing them - a new kind of meta grinding! I picked up the DS version a few weeks ago meaning I now have:

PS2:

  • Disgaea
  • Disgaea 2

DS:

  • Disgaea

PSP:

  • Disgaea
  • Disgaea 2

Vita:

  • Disgaea 3

PS3:

  • Disgaea (PSN)
  • Disgaea 3
  • Disgaea 4
  • Disgaea D2

Garion if you, like, *wanted* to post a bunch of prinny gifs, I guess that would be okay...

The premise of Disgaea 5 revolves around an entity known in the game as “Void Dark,” who’s dubbed in the magazine as “the strongest, most evil demon emperor.” Upon coming into power, Void Dark devastates numerous Netherworlds in his wake with the help of an army known as “The Lost,” a group filled to the brim with only the most treacherous soldiers, rumored to number over one million. Although things start to look so bad that nobody can fight back and turn the tide, the Overlords of the affected Netherworlds, resentful of Void Dark’s rule, slowly begin to rise up and take on The Lost, intent on getting their revenge. Indeed, unlike in previous games, Disgaea 5 takes place across multiple Netherworlds and has players getting the Overlords and heirs from each world to band together and face against their mutual threat.
A handful of new gameplay tidbits were also discussed. When highlighting characters on battlefield, information displayed now includes stats on damage resistances, as well as who they’re affiliated with, among other new variables. A “Revenge System” is also mentioned to be present in the game, but details are scarce, save for the fact that it’s seemingly triggered during times such as an when a party member falls, resulting in the surviving characters become angry and “REVENGE!!” text appearing above them, as well as potentially bestowing them with stat boosts. A new type of special attack called “Maougis” is also said to be in the game, although the magazine doesn’t explain how they’re different from standard special attacks.

It sure looks pretty!

It would look prettier if they'd let me play those games on my puter. I'm done buying these till they do.

If you want to play the Disgaea 5 from TGS demo follow these instructions: http://gematsu.com/2014/09/get-disga...

For $5? Nah I'm good.

Btw, it's called Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance.

Tangentially, The Awakened Fate Ultimatum will be out in March.

Soo after purchasing Disgaea D2 day one, but never managing really to get into it, I gave it another shot this weekend and got hooked. Any beginner tips and tricks? I just unlocked the item world.

Oh jeez. Umm, play Disgaea 1? lol

Here's my top suggestion: Don't spend too much time in the Item World as you'll over level yourself for the story missions.

The flip to that is if story missions are kicking your butt, visit the Item World once or twice.

As far as tips on the Item World, the first time you go in leave at the first exit on level 10*. Don't push it.

*Note: It's been a while since I played D2, so I don't recall if they changed the Item World exits, but generally they're every 10 levels.

I ended up using the item they give you to leave at level 7 or so, enemies started to get bit hard.

I haven't really 'gotten into' a Disgaea game since the first one. I was hitting NIS games pretty hard at that point(Phantom Brave, La Pucelle) and then by the time 2 came out I was a little burnt out. I sorta got into 3 on the Vita, but stopped after 10 hours or so. I'd really like to get into this one and being on the PS4 might make that happen, I've been looking for experiences to have on the two new consoles and seem to be more receptive to games when I'm on the couch(as compared to my computer chair or on the bed or something with the vita/3ds).

Where's D2? That was the most recent.

Depressing-ish news:

Disgaea 3 week 1 sales Japan: 58,013
Disgaea 3 Vita week 1 sales Japan: 25,127
Disgaea 4 week 1 sales Japan: 79,425
Disgaea 4 Vita week 1 sales Japan: 33,749
Disgaea D2 week 1 sales Japan: 55,443
Disgaea 5 week 1 sales Japan: 22,725

Granted, Bloodborne came out this week, so I'm sure that depressed sales for many other games, but this is a sad thing to see.

NIS needs to shake things up but I keep feeling like they won't be around to do it.

(Numbers taken from Media Create sales reports and VGChartz.)

I wonder if it was just a bad timing with Bloodborne

Good point, updated.

Edit: Ha! Disgaea D2 came out the same day as One Piece Pirate Warriors 2 while Disgaea 5 came out the same day as One Piece Pirate Warriors 3.

It's depressing-ish, but having played all those games (except 5) I can't say I'm surprised. The quality has tanked since Disgaea 2. Meanwhile they've added TONS of paid DLC, with each pack exclusive to a single game.

So, I'd love for them to turn this around by making a good game with good writing and good VA. I don't think that's going to happen, and it's kind of nuts they've been able to coast like this for so long.

Or the fact that the PS4 has been selling poorly in Japan since its release. Probably a bit of both.

As for the quality of the later titles, I can't judge: I own 2 on the PSP and 3 on the PS3, but haven't played either yet. Loved the first one though.

Also true.

The fact NIS is releasing D5 as a PS4-only game is probably a terrible idea.

Then again, they'll probably port it to the Vita since they got D4 working there. Shouldn't be too difficult for them.

North America release date announced for D5: October 6th

maybe i will actually get smart and wait for the portable version this time.

So nobody mentioned the Disgea Triple Collection or whatever they're calling it in here? Released today for PS3. Compilation of D3, D4, and D:D2 on 1 disc.

Apparently just the original PS3 releases. No DLC included.

I only heard about it yesterday, so ...

Really, I have all the games which means I'm not exactly the target demographic.

Apparently the Disgaea 5 demo is up on PS4.

Taking a look at the following week, D5 didn't even make the top 20. The 20th game on the list sold over 8,000 copies, so if we consider 8,000 to be the best case scenario for D5's second week we're looking at 31,000 copies sold in Japan. Yikes.

I got a PS4 in a trade for a pinball machine and I was holding on to it only to play D5 pretty much. I really think I would enjoy it more as a portable though, but Will there even be a portable for it to be on? I have a Vita...
