Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Catch-All

Pages

Capcom has revealed a "concept teaser" for Resident Evil: Revelations 2. "What's a concept teaser?" you might ask. A disappointing live action trailer that shows absolutely nothing in regards to the actual game. Glad to know where Capcom's budget is going.

The game will be released for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 in early 2015. Nintendo 3DS and WiiU are forsaken because "lol casuals".

Revelations 2 to star Claire Redfield and Barry's daughter Moira. The game will feature co-op, seemingly through the story campaign.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 takes place between the events of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 in a detention facility on an abandoned island. Claire and Moira are kidnapped and deposited there upon the game's opening, tasked with facing down a new enemy type called the Afflicted, with producer Michiteru Okabe describing them as "something quite different" from the series' traditional zombies.

Fans of the more tradition Resident Evil titles will be pleased to hear the game is set to be a survival horror entry in the franchise, more akin to the original Revelations or early Resi games, instead of mimicking the action-filled adventures of 5 and 6.

"The project has been finding the line between listening to fan feedback and also doing something different to confound expectations," Okabe added. "I want this to be both a game that doesn't lose what made its predecessor great, while also bringing something new and exciting to the Resident Evil series. Achieving that lofty goal by bringing together past and future will make this an itchy-tasty prospect indeed."

Seems like it'll tie RE5 and 6 together somehow mayhaps? Or is there no other spot to really fit it?

They really need to just hit the big "reset" button on the story for the whole franchise rather than trying to plug up loose ends in what is already a convoluted mess of nonsense.

That said, had a lot of fun with the first Revelations so looking forward to the second one.

I agree, but I'm not sure I want to know what a Resident Evil "reboot" would look like, especially by a Capcom currently trying to figure out how to be a profitable AAA Japanese publisher.

More details have been released by the Capcom Unity blog. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 will be episodic, and the first season will contain four episodes total. Each episode will be $5.99 individually, $24.99 for the entire season plus additional content, or $40 for the retail disc version plus additional content. More details on the additional content between the versions will be released shortly.

So Revelations 2 is taking the episodic nature of the first game and making it a bit more literal.

It's been quite a few years since we've seen Claire Redfield in her own adventure, but early next year she she'll face all-new dangers and dread in Resident Evil Revelations 2. As some fans may already know, since the Code: Veronica days she's joined the anti-bioterror organization Terra Save, helping people around the world deal with ongoing bio threats. Revelations 2 begins with Claire welcoming Moira Burton - daughter of Barry! - into Terra Save, but in true RE fashion it's not long before trouble finds our heroes.

The party is crashed, Claire and Moira are knocked unconscious and taken to a mysterious detention center located on an island. They soon encounter demented, writhing enemies called Afflicted roaming the halls of this abandoned facility, and have to team up to survive. The real question is, who brought them here? And... why?

Ugh.

The original ResiRev was broken up into episodes, but it was generally terribly paced. Maybe that's something they'll improve in the sequel.

I'm bummed that this is skipping the Wii U and, especially, the 3DS. The first one was a great handheld game. This might go in my Wait Until I Get a PS4 pile.

Proper trailer:

Looks like a horror game trailer, that's certain.

TGS Gameplay.

I can't quite tell for certain, but I think that's Jennifer Hale doing Claire Redfield's voice. That or it has been way too long since I've heard Jennifer Hale's voice.

There's a couple things that jump out at me. The first being that some of the environment models and textures are "bad" enough that I naturally have to wonder why they're not bothering with the 3DS, though some of the lighting effects and other bits of environment are enough reason why. Still doesn't excuse them for not doing the WiiU, though part of me kind of hopes they say "SURPRISE! Delayed release on New Nintendo 3DS".

But in regards to gameplay, they certainly want to take their time, and it looks like you'll be given plenty of incentive to run instead of fight. That's good. That, or the person playing was just terrible. There were no English captions so I couldn't tell if there was a particular reason they weren't aiming for the head. Perhaps trying to showcase enemies responding to being shot in specific parts?

What really has me curious is whether there's co-op or not. Moira's role is completely supportive, and it sounds that way given how adamant she is to keep from using a weapon. She reveals items in the environment using the flashlight, for example. The possibilities for co-op, especially in regards to a "hardcore" game with a "casual" character for player two, seems perfect for multiplayer opportunities where there's a gap between player skill and experience. The better player takes control of Claire and primarily handles combat, the other handles puzzles and exploration.

But thus far there's no evidence to suggest co-op is available. In which case, a potential missed opportunity, but I can't imagine most hardcore players wanting to "get stuck" with Moira either.

coop is offline only btw. Took this game from a must buy to a "meh will wait for sale"

1st thought - Was it entirely necessary for the female presenter to be wearing tiny shorts and barely a top while the developers come on wearing jeans and tshirts?

2nd though - yeah sounds a lot like Jennifer Hale to me.

I'm trying to figure out how that's going to work. Split-screen I guess? If you're going to limit it to offline only, then I doubly see no reason for this not to be on WiiU.

Is it too late to harass Capcom? I want to harass Capcom.

So already bought the season pass and am eager for this to preload tonight. Anyone else grabbing this one?

Not until I hear whether or not it's like the Queen Zenobia parts of the game or the "action packed!!!" interludes.

Pre-ordered the full shebang from GMG for $30. I had enough fun with the first one to justify it.

The first game was full of blatant sexism (which was not the part I enjoyed), so I'm going to say they're trying to appeal to what they believe to be their target demographic.

Purchased. Even without counting the campaign, I got more than my moneys worth from the first game's Raid mode - so as long as they've not screwed THAT up too much then 's all good.

Played for about forty-five minutes tonight. Not enough to get a solid impression, but I'd probably keep playing if it weren't, y'know, almost 1a.m. on a weeknight. Stupid adult jobs and responsibilities...

The opening clip for TerraSave had me thinking Capcom was embracing the traditionally dumb writing of the franchise for a moment. I mean, it made me laugh. But sadly, even though they can be intentionally bad, the following dialogue and set-up was just plain old bad. At the very least they don't waste time dropping you into the setting, which is basically just an excuse to have rusty hooks, dirty tiles and spatters of blood everywhere.

They definitely want to be creepy. I have no doubts that I'll be shooting foes down all over soon enough, but thus far they're working on the jump scares. It's not quite like the first Revelations, though. Enemies run at you, as opposed to the slower-moving yet somehow more menacing foes of the first Revelations. I get the feeling Revelations 2 is going to be an actual fusion of all games from the franchise in some way.

But foes are a suitable enough threat that I'm feeling appropriately nervous walking around. It's no Alien: Isolation, but it is suitably creepy forty-five minutes in. We'll see how the rest of the episode goes.

Weapon parts are back for customizing and upgrading weapons, as are blue medallions to shoot, hidden art in the walls to reveal with Moira's flashlight, and other collectibles. I imagine a lot of these will be worth going back for with New Game + features, which may be a bit more interesting with the episodic nature of the game.

I'll be playing more tomorrow... after work.

Yay!

Forgot to mention, the game does have split screen couch co-op, and the second player takes the role of less combat capable Moira. I imagine this is of relevant interest to Clock, though I don't know what her wife's thoughts are regarding bloody semi-horror games. Moira is all a support character, able to stun foes with the flashflight and I think a couple other minor combat actions. I don't know precisely.

In single player you can take control oof Moira, and kind of have to if you want to find hidden items. This slows progress a bit. When the AI has the flashlight out, Moira points it wherever Claire is looking. Problem is the flashlight isn't always out.

I may try an easy playthrough as just controlling Moira, at least as much as they'll allow, just to see what it's like experiencing the game in that fashion. Something tells me that they won't have developed it quite so well as they clearly expect the player to spend more time as Claire.

For those of you still on the fence, you can get the complete edition for $30 over at Green Man Gaming with coupon code 25OFFR-ESEVIL-REVEL2. They'll e-mail you a Steam key. I already got mine.

Is the $25 price tag for this on the PS4 a promotional thing? Why is it so much more expensive on PC?

There are two versions, a complete one that's usually $40 and a season pass that's usually $25. Seems like you're supposed to buy the $25 if you only want to play the story and the $40 if you want all the RAID stuff, which I've heard is pretty decent. Beyond that, I don't know. It's weird. It's also weird that they're releasing it episodically when it's clear they've got all of the episodes ready to release right now and I haven't an option to buy episodes individually.

I know I have some sort of RAID mode add-on on the PS4, so unless you get bonus maps on the PC version Im not sure how different they'll be.

EDIT: So I imagine the $40 price game is the same as the retail disc version listed here.

I played through the rest of episode one tonight, and I must confess I enjoyed it quite a bit. Clock, I don't really think I can compare it directly to the first Revelations, but I can assure you at the very least that there's nothing really like the flashback levels where you have to fight wave after wave of Hunter. There's a number of moments where they encourage you to run rather than fight, and I was able to sneak past some foes rather than fighting them.

I'd say it's probably the most balanced Resident Evil I've played so far, which is both bad and good. You never really run into a moment like in RE4 or RE5, where suddenly you're up against an insanely powerful chainsaw wielding maniac. It's challenging, enemies are certainly a threat, but on the whole it feels easier than any other RE game I've played. Considering my inability to get far in either Evil Within or Alien: Isolation, though, I'm actually kind of relieved about that.

The episode took me about 2.5 hours. I played cautiously and only died twice in one general spot where it wasn't fully clear what they expected me to do. Playing cautiously definitely helps, but I think playing in co-op would be ideal. The secondary character as support feels halfway necessary for this game, especially for the second chapter within episode one. While the second player will never be contributing to combat directly, their assistance is damn near required for the second chapter. That doesn't mean you cannot do it in single player, but the second player will essentially be able to act as spotter for enemies and their weak points. It feels like co-op is a necessity in a way that even Left 4 Dead couldn't match, which is unfortunate since it seems like they really played that aspect down in marketing (and I'm not certain there's options for online co-op, either).

There are a lot of collectibles, plenty of which I didn't find in my first run-through, and after each chapter you obtain BP which allows you to increase a bunch of skills in skill trees. There are also two additional modes to go through the story, a Countdown mode which acts as a speedrun, pitting the player against the clock and allowing them to gain extra time, and the Invisible mode, where enemies are completely invisible unless briefly shone on by Moira's flashlight. Enemies also make noise so that helps, but even so, that just sounds like something I never want to try without a proper co-op partner.

I only played the first mission of Raid mode, but it is not quite what you found in the first Revelations. The first mission took a chunk of a level from Jake's campaign in Resident Evil 6 and had the player progress forward, shooting enemies. In the first Revelations, you essentially replayed the game in a more arcadey setting. Something about the execution feels closer to Mercenaries, but fortunately it was still more fun than Mercenaries. It definitely seems like they developed a lot of the leveling and weapon customization options here.

For $25, I anticipate this will be one of the better Resident Evil experiences. I know it's still too early to tell, and I imagine the fact that this game is easier so far than any other RE by this point will make it the least scary to a lot of people, but I'm liking it.

The end of the episode also ended on a nifty little twist and cliffhanger that actually has me curious.

That kind of sounds like that dark tunnel area early in Resident Evil 5 where one player needs to handle a flashlight while the other shoots. I always found that part really frustrating, even when I had the AI carry the flashlight (it tracks where you're aiming perfectly so you're never shooting into the dark).

"That was close...."

Spoiler:

"...I was almost a Claire Sandwich!"

Moira: "Does Barry tell EVERYONE that story?"

Ha!

"Who's the master of unlocking NOW?!"

Finished! At least the two campaign missions. Quite enjoyed that. I think the weekly episodic release is a REALLY good idea - a break between episodes will probably help keep things from getting to samey.

Also I would REALLY like it if Capcom gave whoever THESE guys are the budget to do a full size RE game because even if it is more combat focused (and it is) they at least have some skill when it comes to tension and pacing. There is only one "Bay" sized explosion here and it's used (correctly) to punctuate the finale of a particular set piece - compare that to RE6 which uses them as ACTUAL punctuation after every sentence (more or less).

Also - seriously, Claire Redfield is awesome - both as a character AND for her physical appearance, which is to say. NORMAL appearance (no wibbly wobbly boobs and wetsuits here!).

Although it remains to be seen what "costume options" are available to unlock...

A promising start! Looking forward to the next episode.

aaaand the downside...

Raid mode is completely broken for me at the moment. As soon as I finish that first mission, it ends up completely stuck on the stats screen at the end, eternally "uploading..." to the point where I have to Alt-F4 out of it. The only current solution is apparently to switch of your router before playing which....er...no. Guess I'm waiting for a fix...

Damn, that blows. Sorry to hear.

I actually wanted to gush a bit about a particular enemy introduced in this episode, but it may count as a spoiler so putting it all behind tags:

Spoiler:

I feel like the freaky-deaky monster beany they introduced in this one was really cool and tied in really well with the idea of using both characters. I actually spent most of my time as Natalia just so I could always know when and where a foe was coming from, then sic Barry on 'em. Unfortunately the A.I. doesn't really fight unless you purchase that ability specifically, so you can't just point and say "Go kill 'em", but it means the player is constantly making excellent use of both characters.

But more so, the scrawny beasties have weak points you need to shoot, but you need Natalia in order to spot them. In co-op, this offers a FANTASTIC opportunity to work together as a team. It's why I actually wanted a second player to be helping me out. Even playing single-player, though, it encouraged me to thus fight smarter, sneaking around as Natalia, figuring out where the enemy was, and then switching to Barry and firing at its weak spot. As pyxistyx said, it's definitely an action game with suspenseful elements, but they're making me THINK about how I'm fighting, and that's what makes a game stand apart.

If they keep implementing that sort of creativity, then the next several episodes should be fantastic.

I played through the first "part" with Claire and Moira. I find myself playing Moira mostly so I can shine her flashlight around, then I switch to Claire for shootyshooty times. Is there a way to disable those spinning blade things? I missed two gun parts because of them, the first because the part was tucked behind the blade in its little cubby and the other because I used a flamethrower "turret" to blow it up, and it blew up the gun part too. Oops.

I do not like Moira very much. The flashlight mechanic feels a lot like just adding a step to the usual loop of searching for supplies. It's not enough that the item shines, you need to hit it with the flashlight so it SUPER shines, otherwise it doesn't exist. Also, come on, Moira. There are people wrapped in barbed wire trying to murder you. Get over your fear of guns. Also put on some pants.

In general she feels shoehorned in since "co-op" has been a necessary feature since 5. From what I understand the co-op is kind of busted on PC anyway, so I'm not crazy they had to force in a buddy character in service of a feature I'm not going to use and that sounds kind of mediocre in the first place.

That aside, I'm enjoying myself. The monster and area design feels like Silent Hill to me, which is fine as I've thought Silent Hill had a much better aesthetic than Resident Evil.

The skill system is interesting and I just unlocked the ability for the "armed" character to use their weapons automatically without consuming ammo, albeit for reduced damage. My guns don't do anything interesting yet but I've only just started, so that's to be expected. Wish that coach gun packed a bit more of a punch. Maybe I can fix that next chapter.

Spoiler:

You can grab them in the second part of the chapter with Barry - assuming you don't do what I did and destroy the second one with the flamethrower.
