ZERO DAY (formerly Survival and Apocalypse Catch-All)

I noticed Rust isn't on this list... I guess it's not really a survival game, more like a sandbox base building game?

Is there a better thread to connect with other people playing Rust, or does GWJ just not like it?

There are a couple other threads that mention it, but the posts there are 11+ months old

GWJ seems to touch on mp-focused games and then move on after a month or so.

Flame in the Flood is out today, and currently discounted on Steam, in case anyone is interested.

I am interested in Flame and the Flood. I'm also interested in working on this thread some mores. It's kinda like smores but with more content about survival and post-apocalyptic games.

Flame in the Flood looks tempting. How does it compare to FTL and Tharsis from a gameplay/mechanics POV and is there much/any focus on combat?

Far Cry: Primal would fit into the survival aspect of this. It doesn't need to be highlighted, though.

I only played it a little and it doesn't really compare to FTL or THarsis save for its roguelite nature. Don't starve is a much closer example. That said it seems to be light on combat. Most of the time running away was the only option. I think later though you can probable fight back.

I've now moved my thoughts on this page's design over to my Strangeblades thread.

A new entry is on the list along with some style changes. The Final Station.

I've just started playing Sheltered. It's quite good so far.

Has anyone mentioned The Division in here? I know it's not exactly in the same vein of what gets suggested here generally, but post pandemic NYC looks straight up apocalyptic and the Dark Zone has some survival-esque aspects. It's also a really, really, really good game.

The amount of work you've put into the OP is staggering.

Agreed and much appreciated!

Arise!

Picked up NEO Scavenger in the final minutes of the Steam sale. I played the demo a couple years ago when there was some discussion in this thread but never got around to buying it. Sitting in an airport killing some time so I fired it up.

First game: Couldn't find decent clothing, eventually was able to make a decent camp and starting to scavenge for more supplies so I could run around in more than a t-shirt. Just when I was getting confident another scavenger shows up with his cool crowbar and smites me. Made it about 2 days.

Second game: Left cryo facility, scavenge in first town. WOW! Poncho, Pants, shirt, shoes, multi tool! Best start ever! I'm going to do so well this game! End turn. Creature from cryo facility shows up and I try to escape a few times as it closes the gap. No luck there, so I turn to fight, figuring I have a small knife. End up scratching it. It ends up killing me. Made it 2 hours.

I love the variability and that it is a survival game that feels like something that I can play in short bursts, which is perfect for what my gaming has been like lately.

I also picked up Wayward, and have a few hours in so far. Hasn't really struck me yet the way NEO Scavenger has. But we'll see.

That's cool. I think I can get behind bite-sized survival. Thanks for the content-rich necro!

NEO is one of those games(So many of these now, with the pile so big) where I know I've just scratched the surface. So much time tinkering and trying to figure out the mechanics, but suckered away by another shinier(at the time) game. I need to step back into that savage and unforgiving land.

I've delved pretty deep in NEO and can consistently get a good run going. the problem is once you get over the initial hump of basic survival and get into Detroit and into the story there isn't much there.

This is what I also found - I also found it quite challenging to make other builds work. Surviving without combat abilities seems impossible.

There isa fair bit more, but it's not super obvious. There's a pretty well defined "best" path to follow, but unless you make heavy use of the wiki you're going to die a lot trying to find it on your own, especially since you can lock yourself out of being able to get a non-death ending, but the game won't tell you when you've done so. I think you can skip Detroit entirely and still get the "good" ending, but the full story of the game isn't apparent until you follow the paths to multiple "bad" non-death endings first.

Raft available on itch.io. Anyone given it a try?

It's fun! Pretty easy though, but I'm liking it!

Bah! No visual or audio indication that you are dying of thirst or hunger! I had killed the first shark, had a crop plot and 2 palm plots with trees ready to chop down, and was building up to a second level! All I had to do was eat one of the several items I was holding!

I have icons for thirst, hunger, and health levels at the bottom right.

And I really can't figure out how to use the hook correctly. I'm always short or way long.

Oh yeah, but when those little icons at the edge start to run out you don't seem to get secondary notices, like the screen flashing read, your character coughing or rasping, anything like that. Or they happened but were too subtle to distract me from raft renovations.

Just wanted to chime in and say your avatar with your tag and your wistful talk go together quite nicely.

May have been mentioned before, but I am ready to check out Days Gone
