Crusader Kings II Spirit-all

Anyone have any recommendations for an online tutorial explaining the controls for this game? I know that there is an in-game tutorial, but I would like an online reference for when I'm actually in the middle of a game and don't want to exit out in order to view the tutorial. How to move build up and move armies, etc. Not a strategy guide, just a controls overview. Thanks in advance.

This should cover many of your questions. http://guides.gamepressure.com/crusaderkingsii/

I usually have the steam browser open while playing for quick reference. As far as controls: Left mouse button to select. Right mouse button for more options (lots of buttons have more options hidden under them) and to move armies / court members. Middle mouse to scroll the window around. That's it.

More DLC on the way....from ParadoxCon press conference

"Pagans invade Crusader Kings II

Some long awaited news for the feudal feuding strategy, as playable pagans will finally be made available. The Old Gods expansion will focus on Vikings and Pagans, and add landless adventurer characters.

The chance to bother the Scandinavians as a Norse warrior has been at the top of the community’s wishlist since the game’s release. The Old Gods will also set Crusader Kings 2′s starting date back to 867 AD."

Woo! Finland playthrough, here I come!

Amazon has an amazing deal on Crusader Kings 1 and 2 and ALL the DLC right now. Get everything for $10 here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B7UK2I2. I bought it again just to get all the DLC.

Quick question for those of you with the DLC. It sounds like the Sword of Islam and Legacy of Rome DLC make game changes that are always on and give you new options. This sounds great. My question is about the Sunset invasion and The Republic DLCs. The latter sounds like a separate scenario. Is this correct?

More importantly to me is whether the Sunset Invasion is "always on". Is it a separate option that you can turn on or off? I have most of the older small DLC and think I may have purchased Sword of Islam in a steam sale, but I'm seriously considering buying the Amazon bundle for Legacy of Rome, Sunset Invasion, and The Republic and a giftable copy of the base game.

When you fire the game up, you can turn on/off any installed DLCs. The Republic is sort of a scenario-within-a-scenario - it adds extra layers of gameplay if you're playing a Republic, but the rest of the changes apply whether or not you've bought the DLC, and are just automatically patched in.

Thanks for the info Tanglebones! I appreciate it.

EDIT: Wow, I feel stupid. A last minute check before purchasing shows I already had BOTH Sword of Islam and Legacy of Rome. I think I'll just wait to grab the other two in a future bundle. With the number of times Amazon and Steam has had these on sale, I'm sure I'll be able to grab them cheap sometime again (and the deal will probably include a few more upcoming DLCs.).

Even when Sunset Invasion is on, they don't always come. I started a new game in Ireland in 1066 and played right through to the end (1460 or so) with no sign of the Aztecs...apart from one female spouse in Iceland, oddly enough.

I think I read on the Paradox forums that even with Sunset on, the Aztecs only show about 35% of the time.

So this game will be about medieval civilizations, gods, and kings? Is that right?

Good grief! Ten bucks on Amazon for CK II plus all DLC and CK I, unlockable on Steam.
They finally broke my resolve. At that price I almost feel bad getting it.

Edit: I also will probably never getting around to playing it

Not sure if joking or not...

You be the judge! Unless you find it not-funny, then I'll be the judge. In which case it will be found at least as funny as standard weapons grade humor.

Gah. Was playing as a Pisan Patrician. My previous character was Doge but he was badly hated (hedonist, heretic, coward). When he died, the Doge-ship (Doge-dom?) went to the head my rival family, I suppose because my guy was so hated. When another family started a rebellion, of course I joined in!

Game over, man, game over. I guess the Doge kicked my dynasty out of the Five Families? The Game Over text was vague, something about "becoming the ruler of a Republic so you are no longer allowed to play". Of course had I known this, I would not have joined the rebellion. Maybe because my character had a feudal holding that had something to do with it. Big bummer though - I had just completed a string of trade posts down the west side of Italy and was raking in the cash.

Yeah, I could load up a save, but this kind of left a bad taste in my mouth for the moment.

I'd be interested to find out what exactly happened there if you revisit it, tboon.

I went back to it (I can't stay mad at you CK2, you're so darn sexy) but of course there was no a rebellion. I thought I had a screen shot of the End Game screen so I could post it here as well as read and digest what it said, but all Alt-PrScr took was the Steam overlay for some reason. I did some digging on the Paradox forums and saw one guy mention something similar but no one had answered his question about it.

So, I guess there's no more information about what seems to be an oddity. Kind of scared to keep playing my merchant republic game now though.

For future reference, F11 saves a screenshot into the CK2 folder in My Documents. Also, F12 saves a screenshot to your Steam library (if you're using Steam). F10 saves the current map mode as an image.

Thanks for the info. I knew that, but so aggravated I didn't remember it at the time.

I keep wanting to jump on the Amazon CK2 deal just for sunset invasion and the republic, but I know I'm not going to play it straight away so I'd do better waiting on the summer sale or just paying full price and supporting them when I do feel like playing it.

The deal isn't available any more.

Problem solved

For those of you who might be interested in another tutorial/introduction, Troy Goodfellow might be doing one tonight.

What's the best DLC to grab in your guy's opinions?

Depends on your interests. Want to play as the Muslims? Sword of Islam then. Like the Byzantines? Legacy of Rome. Merchant Republics? The Republic. Crazy alt-history? Sunset Invasion (although be warned: the Aztec invasions apparently do no happen every game, only approx 35% of the time). Just want to play feudal hunchback leper lord? Don't need any of them. The free patches released with the various DLCs add to the game without the need to shell out for DLC. The various expansions add mechanics for the factions that are targeted in the expansion but if you don't want to play in that faction you don't need that DLC.

Personally, I think each one adds to the game, if you are interested in playing in the target faction. I suppose if I had to choose one, it would be The Republic; the mechanics for playing as a Great House are very good and interesting.

Or you could just get all of them.

After about a year this game finally clicked for me. Coming from Europa Universalis (and dabbling with Hearts of Iron) I think I had spent too much time focusing on the map and not much on the managing relationships and whatnot.

A couple weeks ago I started in 1066 as the King of Scotland and promptly lost the throne thanks to a faction that would have had overwhelming force. Left with just the Duchy of Lothian (which made the relationship thing more manageable) I kept playing and over generations added the occasional county and a long ways down the line a couple of duchies.

I ended up assassinating the King of Scotland (he did something to piss me off... can't remember what it was now) and then I realised if I killed the heir and the heir to the heir I would end up on the throne again. A lot of money was spent and my family regained the throne but my King was killed shortly afterwards and with the elective succession my game ended up ending suddenly. It was awesome. What a great game.

tboon has the gift of it! Most of the actual content of the DLCs is actually contained in the patches that came with them.

And great to hear, Roke!

I am slowly getting into this. Have taken the advice and gone with the goal of uniting Ireland. Slow going but I'm in it for the long haul. Until Oliver's Army shows up.
