That's a hell of a scoop. Good job!

Actually, you're a pretty good enabler

See this?

That's where my end of year plans went. I did finish Assassin's Creed IV yesterday, so there's that.

I picked up Bayonetta 1 and 2 (which I guess were technically part of the plan), and Super Smash Bros for Wii U, and I am seriously considering picking up Divinity Original Sin.

I don't even feel bad about the Wii U games, since I was already thinking about getting Bayonetta before year end anyway, and Smash I am mostly picking up so that I can be not terrible when I play with friends.

Since someone upthread asked, I'm handling Smash by saying I'm done when I have finished the single player challenge mode, and unlocked all characters.

I don't actually feel bad about deviating from the plan, but it does tell me I need to get better at forming plans I will actually stick with.

If I do pick up D:OS, it would replace Dragon Age Inquisition. I already have several RPGs on my pile, but adding two at once would be silly. It's actually on sale now, but I think I'm going to wait. If I finish 4 games by year end, and it is on sale over the Steam Winter Sale, and I feel like I will play it immediately, I'll pick it up. (I would say 5, since it's a nice number, but I knocked one off for AC IV.)

I am on the verge of finishing Mass Effect 3 for the first time. (Insert obligatory rage at the ending here, although not having finished it yet it will have to be vicarious rage)

I seem to have more luck with very linear story games, rather than open worlds. It's hard for me to chain together gaming sessions, so I sometimes forget what it is I'm supposed to be doing when I come back to a game after a hiatus.

This is why you always leave a note (Or keep a small pad of paper near by)

This!

I've made it a habit since way back in my teens - even though time then was flowing like wine from the horn of plenty - so I wouldn't have to figure stuff out if I took some time away from a particular game.

It's saved me plenty of headaches and innumerable restarts.

what a great idea, entirely too sensible for me to come up with.

All games need to implement the "old person forgot" feature, where it will recap what's been going on in the game, complete with "Previously, on..." voiceover.

I don't understand why games with any degree of memory required don't let you create personal notes in a journal or on a map. It would be really helpful to be able to jot down, in-game, a note on a particular quest or location or whatnot. Legend of Grimrock is the last game I recall having anything like that. Skyrim was the absolute worst until I found a mod that fleshed out the quest descriptions to actually be helpful.

Well I hit 41 games completed this year so far, and I feel pretty accomplished. Unfortunatelly I pretty much doubled my pile this year with me getting a hold of both the 3ds and the vita. I think what really helped this year for me is to keep a focus of up to three games per system, that way I don't get bored and actually make progress. Personally I'm not really worried about the size of my pile (I enjoy starring at it) but I want to enjoy as many games as possible in my allowed time and staying focused allows me to do so, I did have a few games that I played an hour or so only to determine its not for me (Fuel, Fracture) but luckily I bought them really cheap. Onto the next year!

These threads are very useful as it makes me realize I play games very, very, very slowly. I finished eight games this year, which is pathetic enough to make me want to cry:

Spoiler:

Alan Wake (replay with DLC), Earthbound, Final Fantasy X HD, Sleeping Dogs (with DLC), Watch_Dogs, Drakengaard 3, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, The Evil Within.

I had several other planned that I didn't get to. Most were new adds for the year.

The net effect is that I still am not playing as fast as I'm adding. I apparently play video games way less than I think I do. I certainly play them far less than I wish I did.

I'm currently playing Tales Of Xillia, and figure I probably have another 150 hours to go, so... this is all going to inform my decisions about what I try to play in 2015, and whether I honestly want to continue playing time sinks like RPGs.

I've not been tracking my pile much at all for the last half-year but I did clear off another game on Sunday night. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified has been marked off. I really enjoyed it, and even the wife suffered watching me play it on the TV since I decided to play with a controller and used Steam big picture mode. I did discover that by default the Steam music player does not pause music when you launch a game.

2014 is almost over (and boy am I glad of that), and I know I won't have time to complete a game by the time the Ball drops, so here's this month's tally.

Backloggery is at 2. Which isn't too bad considering all I added to it. It's certainly much better than the -35 I had back in December last year! 2015, here I come...

Alright, I'm pretty sure I've beaten the last game I can this year, so time to tally up the final totals.

Acquired in December:
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
- Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes
- Blackwell Unbound (thanks shoptroll!)
- Saint's Row IV (thanks Bonus_Eruptus!)
- Super Smash Bros. for WiiU

Beaten in December:
- Strider
- Drakengard 3
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
- Bayonetta 2
- Wolfenstein: The New Order (rental)
- Murdered: Soul Suspect (rental, soon to purchase)
- Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes

Total Numbers:

I honestly don't feel like calculating that right now. I'll calculate numbers when I start a new spreadsheet for 2015.

Verbose Evaluation of This Year's Pile Progress:

I discussed in here before that it gets difficult trying to knock games off the pile when you're also trying to write about them, record video footage for games you've already beaten, and then to create a lengthy video analysis of the final project. I'm gonna be honest, if I were to calculate the amount of work my Remember Me video took to put together, between script-writing, audio recording, audio editing, and then video editing, it could be anywhere between 40 to 60 hours total for a 30 minute video.

So what does this mean for the pile? Well, I think one of the things it'll mean is that I will only watch television shows on my own schedule. This year, Tuesday and Wednesday nights were TV night for my roommate and I, and that essentially meant little to no video gaming was done. I typically wasn't bothered by this as I still found time to play portable 3DS and PSP games on the train to and from work, but my portable pile is also the smallest pile. The least amount of progress is required there.

In addition, I no longer have that job in the city. So in order to make more room for my work and for gaming, I'm going to make sure television has a much smaller role in my life and will sacrifice shows that honestly don't have enough of my interest. This may sound silly in some way, to prioritize the importance of games, but I also feel like I haven't put forth the effort into my games writing that I really should have this year. I don't want video games to ever become my sole hobby, but they are definitely my most beloved and, oddly enough, my most productive.

One thing I will note this year is that I did spend much time replaying old games as well. In addition to replaying Remember Me and The Walking Dead: Season One for video critiques, I replaying Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX and Wild Arms just for the sake of playing them again. Though I played them on the PSP, I ultimately ended up doing a lot of gaming at home as well. While this interferes with pile progress, I don't want to feel guilty about replaying games that I enjoy. So I've decided that if, upon looking at my collection of games, I decide "Yes, I will replay that, because I'm in the mood for it," then I shall do so and feel no guilt.

Finally, I finally made the choice to put Assassin's Creed 3 on the chopping block. For now, the game is abandoned. I may return to it another time, but I am just not enjoying myself. I have other games that have been sitting on the pile for a long time, such as Dead Rising 2, that I need to decide how I'm going to approach. It may be that I simply need to be willing to abandon games that I'm just not feeling at that moment, as this can start to cause a sense of lethargy within the gaming hobby. Over the past few months I've played a series of games that have reminded me why I love this hobby so much, and that is, overall, what I want to focus on.

On the whole, I did not make much pile progress this year. I'm hoping next year can be an improvement.

Lots of pile bloat this month. But I'm not going to let it bother me much because this happened:

Final tally of 2014. Not to shabby, given that a few acclaimed and long games are on there, but not as much as it could have been. Finished 22 and abandoned 13 games. Also added an unacceptable 27 games, especially since I allowed myself to be suckered into MMOs again towards the end of the year.

And to think this month started off so well! So what happened was that I snagged an eShop gift card from Best Buy during the holiday sales season and went on a bit of an eShop binge to try and make some actual use out of the Digital Deluxe Promotion. And I had two Kickstarters finally deliver. And finally Xmas came and dropped the last Professor Layton game onto the pile. So this year went from looking like it was going to a 50% improvement over last year to a bit less than that. But still, it's a record year for me with the fewest number of games purchased since I started using Backloggery and a pretty good year for actually beating/completing games too.

One of the things I'm most proud of this year is that I managed to complete or beat most of the new games I purchased this year and intended to sit down and play (excluding Kickstarter games and gifts) and only had 6 new games make their way to the pile (8 if you count gifts). On the other hand, my plans for conquering the pile were pretty much DOA as I only managed to beat 3 pile games that were on my list of targets (out of ~12 games) and an extra game (Costume Quest) that I took up on a whim. Plus two of the pile games were layovers from 2013. So playing through the backlog isn't working out as well as I'd like and I'll be refocusing my efforts for 2015.

Overall, very happy with how this year turned out. I'm still not close to making a sizable dent on the pile, but I have started slowing the growth a bit as my continued efforts to avoid bundles and Steam sales (outside of gifting other people) are paying off
