2014 Pile thread - The 12 month plan.

Okay, here's what I want to tackle the rest of this year.

3DS:
- Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies

Wii U:
- ZombiU
- Hyrule Warriors
- New Super Mario Bros. U
- The Wonderful 101

Virtual Console:
- EarthBound

I'll probably put some time into another handheld game or two, but for now I want to focus my efforts on my Wii U pile. A couple of those games I got when I bought the console last November, and I still haven't finished them. I should fix that.

Clock, Zombiu is going to be an amazing Halloween game!!

Realized a little while ago that since I've been bitten by the JRPG bug again and it's October, this would probably be a really good time to knock Costume Quest off the backlog.

I hate it when a game turns to a grind when it was once enjoyable. I really had a lot of fun with Diablo 3 on the PS4 until my 2 characters got to 70, and after a few weeks, it's now mostly equipment hunting.

Bleh.

I'm stating this because I had to make myself remove the disc from the system this morning. Otherwise, I'll do what I've done most of the week: get home, do the Spelunky daily challenge, and then jump over to Diablo 3 once that's done.

I've got Transistor and Metal Gear: Ground Zeroes to play, and Diablo 3 ain't helping.

Well, seeing as it's now 30 days 'til Dragon Age (that's what I'm calling this part of the year... it's a thing... for me) I have decided to take my current pile picks and prioritize them from low-hanging, short time investment options to time-sinks.

Hence, in an effort not to have to divide myself between too much once DA:I drops, I will tackle the following games in this order so as to clear up the better chunk of them inside of a month. With the longer ones, I will divide my time accordingly.

Rocket Knight (should be able to knock it off in an afternoon. No idea if it saves because I apparently hadn't "unlocked" the full version, so what what progress I had made prior was not saves, again, assuming it saves progress.)

Rain (have about two thirds of it left, by my estimates, so another quick romp of no more than 2-4 hours left in it)

South Park: the Stick of Truth (this one's got a bit of stuff left but is thankfully short. Still, I do want to Platinum it, but that may have to wait until later)

The Witcher (only played bits and pieces, so I'm looking forward to really diving in as of this coming "second" week of my four week timeline)

Final Fantasy XIII (this is the one that's there at about 1/4 of the way, and I think it will be sharing its time with DA:I. Hard to think it can be taken out before November 18 given my picks and my time availability)

On the portable front I'm mostly dealing with Persona 2: Innocent Sin, and that gets plenty of love on my commutes so I'm sure it'll be down and out by then. Hell, it may not even last 2 more weeks!

That's the plan and I'm gonna do my best to stick to it!

I think I have to admit that this year's plan went awry. In fact, I think I threw it out the window.

The only pile game I've completed is Earthbound.

Looks like I'll be playing Borderlands 2 for the foreseeable future.

Next year, next year my pile plan will be a bit more focused, and I will try not to stray too far from the path. It looks like the rest of '14 is Borderlands and the rest of the Nintendo releases. Not a bad end of year, but so much left behind.

Wrapped up my second playthrough of Far Cry 3. Such a good game.

Started in on Driver San Francisco tonight. Enjoyed what I've played thus far, which is a good sign

After some hand-wringing and discussion about JRPGs for sale on PSN and whether or not $15 was a fair price point for two games versus a potential sale of $10 for one of them, beeporama made what I thought was a really good comment relevant to this thread:

beeporama wrote:

I feel like the picture of financial privilege now. I can't imagine nitpicking over $5 for a RPG. I always think of them in terms of the time investment; I run out of hours long before I run out of spending money.

I mean, I know this isn't a pile thread, but I'd take it on the flip side: if you aren't interested enough to spend at least $15 on a game, are you interested enough to risk at least twenty (the minimum investment most JRPGs require to "get good") hours of your life on it, even if it was free?

We've talked in here before about viewing the pile in terms of time to play rather than money spent, and this is another way of looking at it. Are you "saving" $5 if it's a game you're not going to play? And if it's something you're really interested in, are you really losing out on all that much if you buy in at $15 instead of $10?

Food for thought.

I've been thinking about this topic a lot lately, and not just with games. I have a lot of game, books, etc. that I've bought on sale over the years for bargain prices, but I've so far never touched many of them since buying them. I don't regret having them per se because there have been times when things go "out of print" and become difficult to find or are only offered at obscene prices (such as Daggerfall before Bethesda started offering it for free download) but I've been thinking to myself how much money I might have saved over the course of these years if I only bought what I was going to play (or read, etc.) at that very moment. I suspect that even had I paid full price for the games I actually played, it would still come out to be less than the money I've spent on both the games and everything else that I currently have in my backlog. I have stopped myself from buying games and DLC that I see on sale now if I know that I won't be playing them anytime soon. It doesn't always work, but I think in some ways, I am moving towards "living in the moment" when it comes to making purchases.

Having lived through the PS1 being state of the art and furiously hunting for games like Suikoden 2 or Valkyrie Profile, this warped my thinking for some time as well. But the rise of digital distribution has made it far less likely that I'll find myself suddenly unable to play a game. And really, if I do end up paying $100 for some out of print game, that's still way less than the total of all the games I snapped up and never played or which dropped to $20 or less by the time I got around to playing them.

It is still, of course, a gratifying and empowering feeling to buy things. There's a reason people talk about "retail therapy" when they're blue. But it's useful to realize when that Steam sale pops up that it's not logic speaking, it's your lizard brain.

Had a second sitting with this game last night, got to chapter 3, and while it's still enjoyable at times, it's feeling like a lot of work to me. The world is ok, but the driving doesn't feel as good as I like, and that causes roaming the world to be less enjoyable. I enjoy a good racer, even a good open world, but this just isn't doing it for me anymore. Might be one of my quickest jettisons...

Coming to terms with the fact that I might just not like JRPGs as much as I used to.

After having now put a couple dozen hours into Bravely Default, Final Fantasy X, and Person 4 over the last week, I feel comfortable saying the above was just a phase.

It's that time of year again when there are more new releases than I know what to do with, sales on past releases, and of course that great big looming pile of shame. In an effort to push back against that a little bit, I'm working on instituting a kind of reward points system for beating the games I own.

When I beat one, I get a certain number of points, and when I've accumulated a certain number of points, I can buy a new game. Taking a bit of inspiration from Bravely Default, however, I'm allowing myself to overspend and get a new game that I don't have the points for, but then I won't be able to do it again until I've worked myself out of point debt.

Here's how it works. I've broken my pile up into categories by platform and age, and then I've assigned a base point value to each. Like so:

  • Wii, Wii U, and 3DS Virtual Console games; PSOne classics - 5 points
  • PSP; PSN; Wii U and 3DS eShop games - 15 points
  • 3DS; PlayStation TV - 40 points
  • Wii; Wii U; PlayStation 3 - 50 points

Then bonus points are assigned based on if it's a downloaded title (+5 points) and if it takes a long time to complete (+5 points for ≥15 hours; +10 points for ≥40 hours; +20 points for ≥70 hours).

So, something like Hyrule Warriors is a Wii U retail game (50 points) that I downloaded (+5 points) that takes less than 15 hours to beat (+ 0 points) for a total of 55 points. Persona 4 Golden is a PlayStation TV game (40 points) that I own on cart (+0 points) that takes over 75 hours to compete (+20 points) for a total of 60 points.

I can buy a new downloadable game when I've accumulated 50 points and a new full-size game when I've accumulated 100 points. The goal is to incentivize me to play through newer retail releases that I've likely spent more on, or else through any number of sprawling RPGs, with rewards for clearing through them and through some of the lighter, less expensive cruft in my pile.

But if I get a real hankering for a hot new release, like Fantasy Life or Smash Bros., I can overspend my accumulated points to get it. I just can't overspend if I'm already in debt.

We'll see how it goes!

It's October 30th and I'm 100% certain I won't finish a game by tomorrow night, so I'll kick things off for this month.

Backloggery now says 23 and I reached the "Master of Unlocking" IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/badges/magickey.gif) state with a majority of games completed. Which is pretty awesome considering I have a move and a thesis on my hands. Clearly, I'm procrastinating.

I'm hoping to finish all of my Dragon Age Origins playthroughs by the end of November. Not sure if it will happen due to school and the fact that I've also been reading more lately, but it's my primary gaming goal. Still even a little bit of progress will be progress!

Off to a stellar start with my rewards points plan after impulse buys of not one but two games, Costume Quest 2 and Resident Evil Revelations. So, I'm at -150 points. I'm curious to see if that spurs me to beat some stuff before the release of Smash Bros. on the 21st or if I get grumpy and abandon the whole thing.

October Update!

Current Game: Final Fantasy XIV: Dreams of Ice

Beaten in October: Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

Added in October: Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, Pix the Cat, Tri, The Legend of Korra, Fantasy Life, Shadowrun Returns

November will be mostly consumed by FFXIV, Binding of Isaac Rebirth, Mario Kart DLC and Smash Bros. WiiU at the end of the month.

Dropping Fairy Fencer F still hurts.

I totally forgot I purchased Smash Bros for 3DS last month. I "beat it", I suppose, but my lack of enthusiasm should make me think carefully about the Wii U version.

Or you could just keep sending people Steam gifts!

Thanks, BTW

October delta!

Started:
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (3DS)
Costume Quest (PC)

Dropped:
None

Continued:
Persona 4 (PS2)

Beaten:
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (3DS)

100%/Completed:
None

Added to the Pile:
None

Month went about as well as expected. Smash 4 on 3DS was the only pile addition, and I managed to finally unlock everything for that while we were on vacation (which qualifies as "Beaten" in my book). I also started Costume Quest on a bit of a lark and I'm having fun with that so I'll probably beat that this week since I hit the 3rd area last night. It will probably end up in the "Completed" pile on Backloggery since it's short and I'm enjoying exploring everything so completing all the quests feels like something I can do without it feeling like a chore.

This month I'm planning on playing a fair bit of Binding of Isaac: Rebirth although I'd like to get some time in with Theatrhythm before Smash Wii U arrives. There's also the Mario Kart 8 DLC as well. And Persona Q which is going straight onto the pile into the wine cellar until I finish Persona 4.

Thanksgiving in America. A time to be reminded that what you have is never enough, thanks to Steam sales, black Friday ads, and Christmas lists that won't write themselves.

During this season, be thankful for what you do have. Sure, you'll end up with more pile toppers this season, that's to be expected, but don't forget that instead of playing the "how cheap can I get X" game, you could be enjoying what you already have.

If you haven't made a list of what you do have, now may be the time to start. If you have made a list, go take a look at it and reflect on everything that you still have to enjoy.

A timely reminder. Thanks!

I actually just recently made a list of all my pile games, and it was a fun but sobering experience.

I'm going to be revisiting my spreadsheet, but short answer is "Final Fantasy VII was the only thing I beat in October...and Destiny, but does that really count as I'm still playing it?"

Typically at this time of year I'm eagerly awaiting Black Friday for all the games I missed but am interested in. Games like the new Earth Defense Force, the new Wolfenstein, Thief, and either this year hasn't been impressive or I purchased all the games that really matter to me already (outside of Hyrule Warriors or Captain Toad, neither of which will have a price drop before Christmas).

But what really bums me is I'll be very limited as to gift-giving capabilities unless I can get a great new job on December 1st.

Nothing but pile to burn otherwise.

I'd be lying if I said I haven't been working on my game plan for next year over the last couple of months. I have no idea if I'll have more success but it's given me plenty of navel-gazing about my priorities with games right now. But I'm happy that I'm excited to play some of the pile games I'm committing to (hopefully) playing next year.

Time to think out aloud again.

I'm happy with where I am with my gaming now. Well, mostly. My focus is back to a level which I find agreeable and I'm completing a good number of games. Most importantly, I'm having fun with what I am playing and like how I'm going about gaming. No more bad feelings from too much game-hopping. I don't have the same delirious high of enthusiasm that I did in August but I'm ticking along well enough.

I've been managing to strike a good balance between new games and pile games. It's been about 2/3 pile to 1/3 new for several months, and I swapped that to 2/3 new and 1/3 pile in October as that's when the new releases began to arrive for me. That's working well so far and I aim to do the same in November, and possibly December too.

My Playstation profile is a good indicator of how I'm doing. I'm not fussing about collecting trophies but the casual metrics taken from it are useful for assessing progress since I'm currently doing most of my gaming on PS3, PS4 and vita. I have 15 games with 100% now, compared to 2 in February. I also have a lot more games with a good number of trophies, indicating games where I've finished everything which I want to and moved on. If you look at the older part of my profile then you'll see a lot of games with 0% - 10%, and they're invariably games which I dabbled with and intended to return to but never did. When I started looking at this stuff my overall average completion rate was something like 21%. It's now 37%. Considering the sheer amount of dead weight I'm pulling along that's a big step up. That combined with the list of games which I've finished this year I know I am doing well.

Gaming time is variable and I'm not always playing as much as I'd like. I find occasions where I go, "I want to play something. I have time and am in the mood ... but I can read the internet on my tablet instead." That's what I end up doing. An hour later I feel like I've wasted the time because, being honest, half of the stuff which I read was only of mild interest to me and I only read it to pass time without the inconvenience of swapping to something better. That needs to stop. I'd rather be reading a book, or playing a game, or watching part of my DVD backlog. It's a lazy habit which I've gotten sucked into doing because I've spent a lot of time ill in the last 6-8 weeks and I don't have anyone to send running to fetch things. I need to nix the habit, and if I can stop catching 'flu and getting migraines and stuff that would help too!

The backlog target list idea is a mixed success. I find that I don't want to follow it so it will be abandoned. However the process of going through my games and choosing the 5 most appealing titles on each platform reintroduced me to what I have available, and reminded me about a lot of games which I am excited to play. That makes me feel like I should play more and try to fit as many of these games in so I don't miss out, and that's not a terrible feeling to have unless it transforms into "need to play" rather than "want to play". I also weeded out a bunch of less desirable titles in the process of making that list. Overall I am classing it as a successful exercise despite it not working as intended.

Now I have reached this point I feel able to look at games intake. It's time to trim my buying a little. First off, an easy target: my PC. What do I play on my PC? Strategy games, PC exclusive RPGs, and a few other PC exclusives. That's it. I don't enjoy playing console ports on it no matter how much better they are. So why do I buy them? That needs to stop. Ditto picking up 'merely' good strategy games when I already have loads of very good or excellent ones vying for my attention. They're a huge time-sink. Focus.

I need to be more realistic about which console games I will play as well. Will I play Smash Bros on the Wii U? I liked the N64 and Gamecube entries in the series - and I have never taken the Wii version out of the box. I passed on the 3DS version because my eyes can't cope with so much action on a small screen, and I find I do not feel like I'm missing out at all. Perhaps I will pass on Smash. Do I need 'fun but flawed' games like Lord of the Fallen and Evil Within? No, probably not. At least, not until I've finished some of the more suitable games for my tastes. The same applies to other games, new, old and forthcoming.

My Playstation Plus membership is also under scrutiny. It's due for renewal at the start of December. The previous two years renewing has been a no-brainer. This year I am seriously questioning the value of it. Not the value in terms of how much I pay versus the cost of games like many people do. The value in terms of how many games I actually want to play versus how many "That may be fun" titles which add to the pile and either never get played, or which get played instead of games which are more to my taste. It's a matter of knowing that I don't have time to play all of the games which I'm very interested in, never mind the ones which I have a milder level of interest in. I only claim the titles which I think I might play instead of claiming all of them and it's still a big problem.

The PS4 has changed the European PSN+ landscape and that's source of the problem. We get fewer games overall ergo fewer chances for me to get something which I do want to play. We get a lot of indie games, and for the most part I'm not interested in the types which they choose (arcade, minigame and shooter types have never been my thing) and if I am interested in them then chances are I have probably already purchased them because they're cheap. Going forwards, I think it's a problem which will continue to happen. I own most of what I want to play on PS4, and the games which I don't own are unlikely to appear on the service any time soon, e.g. Alien: Isolation. Therefore anything on the PS4 is probably not a good use of my time or a duplicate of something I own. The same applies to the vita. On PS3, there are some retail games left which I'd really like but they don't do many retail games now so chances of getting those games are slim. It feels like spending money to get games which I'm not that bothered about playing, which then pile up and distract me from games I'm more excited about.

Currently I have a backlog of PSN+ games which I am legitimately excited to play mixed in with all the lower interest stuff. They built up during the long period where I couldn't play much, and I think how few of them are from this year also says something about value. I can't let my sub lapse without losing access to those appealing games. My current feeling is that I should renew my sub, complete those games, and then see how I feel about letting it lapse when the time comes. I might take a 3 month renewal instead of the usual 1 year. Or I'll get a year if I can find it discounted. Realistically, I'll probably need a year to clear those games unless I focus on them to the exclusion of all else. But a year is another year of having those low-interest games pile up, and of waiting for the monthly reveal only to feel disappointed because there aren't (m)any games which I want once again.

Hmm. Now I've written all of that I do feel that I am thinking in the right directions for most of this. I have exactly 1 month to solve the PSN+ problem.

I come to make amends... I bought the Humble Bundle 13 and just added the entire damn thing to my library.
