John Oliver is Amazeballs! (Andy Zaltzman is in his shed)

Charter schools sound, to me, like a bunch of shysters trying to make a quick buck. I'm sure a lot are on the up and up, but the entire incentive structure for that business is completely inimical to public interest.

Yeah they don't make much sense to me.

Private schools are one thing.

But this charter school thing is taking public money and not being held up to the same standards or rules as a public school at all. Does not compute.

Most Chicago charters seem at least to be OK, and I like the idea of trying to implement new pedagogical theory in limited test cases like that, but I feel like charters are really backed because they're not part of the union compensation contract.

Yes, that's certainly a big part of some of the behind-the-scenes political scheming. The NEA is a huge lobby and an integral part of the Democratic machine. Hillary even nabbed our new slogan this year ("Stronger Together"), which isn't really surprising considering how early we endorsed her in the primary process.

Targetting unions--even obliquely, via charter schools--attacks one of the pillars of the Democratic party.

Haha. Well, there are bad apples in every bunch, Wordsmythe Something tells me that the IEA won't be contributing to his campaign in the future.

Between the strike and the sharp increase in crime this year, I'm really hoping the good people of Chicago show Rahm the door next election cycle.

I suspect it won't be much longer before we all come to the same conclusion on charter schools that we have with private prisons.

Remember this "model teacher?"?

I'm not even being sarcastic.
