BRASIL 2014 Catch-all *Pope Frank vs Pope Palpatine*

Pages

I confess I have no idea who's got the highest chance to take the cup home this year, but whatever happens, I'm looking forward to playing "guess the score" game as we did last cup. So there, let the ruminations begin, hope paraguayan girl goes all the way this time!

Happy to have any / all Goodjers in the mix. :D

I can't wait for it to start. It's gonna be great. Though I'm heartbroken, right now, Mexico is playing a friendly vs. Ecuador, and one of our finest payers, Luis Montes, just broke his leg in half. He's out. The faces of the entire team are just....damn.

Still though, I can't get enough World Cup. I have a feeling Brazil isn't taking the cup. Nothing would make me happier, I hate them soccer-wise. I'm actually rooting for Argentina to take it just because it would sting even more, hehehehe.

If not them, Germany is my best bet. I don't see any other team ready to take the cup, although an European team has never won in N/S America.

EDIT: Well f*cking great...Rafa Marquez is on his way to the hospital as well, to check if he didn't fracture his foot as well. Oh man...

Yeah, any friendly match before the World Cup is anything but.

I'm kinda rooting for Uruguay, we need another strong southamerican team to take the cup, enough of Brasil, I'm not crazy about Argentina either.

On the european front Spain is my go-to team, I'm also waiting to see what's the fuzz about Belgium this time around, they were one of my favourites back in the ceulemans/scifo era.

I'm thinking Chile is this WC's dark horse. I think they may surprise us. Something tells me that both Spain and Netherlands qualifying isn't gonna happen. I don't know who stays behind, but I think Chile can definitely cause some damage.

.

It's not like they haven't been close though. Holland would have won in '78 but for Argentina bribing their way past Peru in the final second phase game, Germany were beaten by the same cheats in '86, Italy only lost to Brazil on penalties in '94.

Once US is out, I'll be pulling for:

1) Argentina
2) Anyone other than GER or BRA

World Cup is the best.

I've made my awful predictions. Lets see what happens now.
I think I've made a few good picks only. The ones where The Netherlands
win and become champion. Don't care much about the rest lol

Both Spain and Holland? You're cra-cra-crazy!
I don't think Australia has what what it takes yet.

As an American born Euro-Mutt, I'll be rooting for the following teams participating in the World Cup that represent the homelands of my parents and grandparents in this order:

USA
Germany
France
Russia

And while my paternal grandmother was born in Italy, I do not root for them. I don't like their attitudes or the way they play football. Very dirty.

Notes: While I tend to favor the teams of USA and Germany, my favorite individual footballers seem to come from France. My all time fav: Zidane, my current fave: Ribery, and Pogba who has really endeared himself to me.

Bracket entered!

I'll do as much live reporting as I can within reason.

Very excited for the Cup, as always. Would be more excited if Landon Donovan were going, though.

I will probably pull for Brasil in their games. Literally every Brasilian I've met had been a very friendly, nice person. Brazilians of other sorts are nice, too.

And my neighbor directly across the street is Brasilian. As expected, a super nice guy. I'm hoping to organize some soccer watching with neighbors when this thing finally kicks.

one of our finest payers, Luis Montes, just broke his leg in half.

That is super cringe-inducing, even in seeing still images of the break.

For my part:
1) I'll be pulling for USA.
2) Donovan should probs be on the team.
3) I'm willing to consider Chile if/when USA gets knocked out. (My godmother's Chilean.)

Dutch-American here, so I am USA and Oranje all the way.

Finally, someone I can talk to. Oranje boven! lol I will cheer a little bit for the USA now

Rooting for the following underdogs:

* USA
* Japan
* Ivory Coast (would love for Yaya Toure to get a chance to really shine at the World Cup)

Of the teams who I think stand a chance to make it to the semis, I'm rooting for:

* Netherlands
* Belgium
* England (arguably, they should be listed above - reaching the semis would be a shockingly-good run for them)
* Whoever is playing against Uruguay (unless Suárez remains out with his knee injury. I hold no particular animosity towards the rest of the team)

Don't care who wins, so long as no City players are injured.

Oh - and so long as Argentina or France don't win.

I'll root for the US for as long as they are there, which should at least be for the first 2 games, and maybe even the third.

After that it will be Germany/Holland (assuming they go back to playing the beautiful game and not the dirty stuff they did last WC).

Chile sounds good for a SA country.

Every-four-year soccer fan here.

Will pull for the US, of course. (Source: I'm an American. U-S-A, U-S-A, etc. etc.)

After that? I dunno. Maybe Mexico?

I should hate El Tri because it's the US team's biggest rival, right? But the team is so damned dysfunctional that it might be fun to watch.

Plus, North America -- sort of like how football fans in the Southeast all seem to fall in behind the SEC banner during bowl season.

I'm mostly just hoping for some scoring. My soccer-fan friends claim that teams play too much defense during the World Cup.

Bracket made for the ESPN funtimes

How many fake injuries will happen this show Championship?

Why? Look at all the real ones before the World Cup even started.

Japan or Germany.

Oops, meant one or the other, hehehe. Yeah, Australia definitely has no chances of qualifying, although that would make me so damn happy.

I'm rooting obviously for Mexico, but once we're out:

Real contenders:
Argentina
Netherlands
Germany

Dream contenders:
Mexico
Costa Rica
Australia!

Notes:
I really wanna see Ghana pull through. What they accomplished last cup was amazing.
Really, really, REALLY wanna see Brazil, Portugal, USA lose. Sorry yanks, I love ya, 'cept in this. Even if you did save our asses. I'm grateful, but I still hate ya!
Excited to see Gigi in his last WC. Though my family is from Italy, I've never warmed to their team. But Gigi I love. He's the man.

I can see Holland falling at the group stage. They did so at the last Euro Cup.

Oh, you leave Portugal alone! We already had the Greek disaster at home... and the 1986/2002 World Cups. I can't take that crap anymore.

Would have had Costa Rica on my list if Oviedo had been able to recover in time. I would also be happy to see the Socceroos advance out of group play (especially since this will be Tim Cahill's last World Cup), but think their odds are probably even worse than Mexico's, which were already long even before the most-recent injuries.

For what it's worth, I always want Mexico to do well, unless they're playing the US. Having a worthy rival is a good thing, and makes those victories all the sweeter.

Spoiler:

Dos a Cero for life. :P
