DOTA 2 Catch-all

Wow, that is pretty great, as well as denying bottom almost every other wave.

I know! It seemed pretty awesome!

Last hitting isn't gaming the system. It's a skill test. It requires having an understanding about how much damage you do and the timing of the damage. It's a way to start one side moving ahead of another. Otherwise it's just heroes trading blows and leveling and progressing at the same speed.

Granted, the only narrative is within the context of the game and generally I don't like that. I am not a numbers guy and I favour narrative over abstraction(1).

I like DOTA because it pushes my skill level and the game builds its own narrative. Yes, it's strange that you would kill you own people to deny experience to the enemy, but when you survive a fight, killing your opponent but only have 5 life left, there's an internal narrative that is compelling. Having people to share it with makes it so much better.

That's why the majority of my posts are about games I just played. I played them alone and want to share the story with someone.

Like the Axe who kept auto-attacking creeps even while being KOTL-blasted and Shadow Worded.

Hey Coyote, Hickle, I've found your secret dota forum. Trying to up my game to a level where I can start playing some semi carries and true supports. Getting mad sick of having to carry with Omni and Disruptor. Although truthfully, it's pretty, pretty, pretty sweet to go 15+ with disruptor. Anyway, Videohead could you shoot me an invite to your Dota group? We're already steam buddies. Matt the Mo is steam handle. Cheers.

Also, can't wait to role as Abbaddon!!!

So thank you to Nexus for gifting me a Dota 2 invite. So now Is there anyone out there who would be willing to chaperon a newbie. I have watched about 5-6 videos on the game and think I understand the "basics" but man I feel like doing would be better than watching for me.

So, try the tutorial and then set up a couple practice lobbies with bots. Get a sense of last hitting and the abilities of 2-3 characters. Join the GWJ channel in-game. We can join you for some bot matches or public games to try to walk you through some of the basics.

cool I will do that. Thanks for the advice.

Hit me up Rooney. [GS*]Coyotebd on steam.

I definitely owe some pay-it-forward for Videohead and Casktapper's efforts.

Feel free to add me Rooney. I'm down to help. Another DotA player is one less LoL fan I have to argue with haha.

Also, this is a pretty no nonsense guide to learning some new heroes. It kinda assumes that you are already semi competent, but the general outline is useful, I think, for newbs also.

Also, I imagine these 60 second guides would be good for learning more about a hero that interests you.

So, Spiritbreaker=Easy Mode?
Just went 12-2-14 with him and I know I made a bunch of mistakes
Partly it was a really bad opponents. 69 kills to 12.
Still, hang back from a teamfight a little and charge the low-life guy who's retreating so I greater bash the entire enemy team on my way through.

Thanks for the games last night. I've been feeling somewhat frustrated with dota over the past few weeks and the two matches last night left be feeling enthused again.

So, I'm stuck inside during the manhunt. I'll be online all day pretty much if anyone wants to play.

No, he's not really easy mode, he's one of the best initiators, but without farm he's just as vulnerable as anyone else. He requires good timing from your team as well to join the fight in a charge.

I just got to Saean's place and was going to ask what you are doing on so early. Then I realized what the answer probably was.

Two hearts and a bloodstone on the Tibersaw? That's pretty ridiculous; Though in a 68 minute game, the items are going to get crazy.

You guys wanna see how not to play Clockwerk? Check out my game from last night!

I watched a bit of that game Videohead. It must have been frustrating when your team-mates kept stealing the kills on people you had doomed who were leaving the fight.

Played the new guy today. Randomed him in an AP. Died too many times but I like the character. First time (since the first time I played Dota) that I winged my skill build. I don't have it in front of my but I think I went with Arcane bolt then Ancient Seal then Concussive Shot. Seems like Arcane bolt is better later since it scales with Intelligence while Concussive Shot doesn't.

Hiya all. New to the GWJ forums, but I've played with many in GW2 for the past several months now. I'm also a rl friend of Cobble.

I've played LoL up to level 30 where it quickly turned no more fun for me. Peeps in that game get all so antsy if you make even one mistake

So I have been playing up with DOTA2 for a bit. I was gonna play with Cobble, but he chickened out, so here I am. If anyone wants to group up let me know!

I am new to DOTA2, but semi amateur in MOBA's in general. I have only really played 2 characters so far so that I can get a good feel for them:
Phantom Assassin
Crystal Maiden

I've only played co-op vs bots so far, since it seems like people are lenient in there if you make a mistake, but id be willing to group up with anyone if you all are willing to show me the high ropes.

I'm around, and Coyotebd is around. We're probably the two lowest level regulars in the GWJ Dota circle. There are a few others that trickle in and out it seems. Hit us up on steam; post your steam ID if you haven't already and we'll invite you to the steam group. If you see us online, please say hello, and we can murder creeps for money together. Otherwise, have fun exploring the game and messing with all the different heroes! I wish you luck good sir.

Unfortunately what you experienced in LoL community wise, is pretty prevalent across MOBAs in general, you will get those people that tolerate no mistakes, and rage for very little reason. What has always separated DoTA from LoL from me, is the actual game play. Yes, they are both 5v5, 3 lane maps, but the game play is wildly different. I'm one of the ones that played the Warcraft3 mod almost from the start, so when dota2 finally appeared I knew all the nuances and tactics. Even so, playing this game for the better part of a decade, i still learn things every day that challenge me, which is what keeps me coming back. The emotion on the other hand (even my own) is an unfortunate consequence.

That said, when we play as a group, we generally have more fun, you'll get raging on the other team, but for the most part our community is helpful, and understanding, if you learn from your mistakes and mis-steps as opposed to just blindly charging ahead. If you go in with an open mind, and especially taking what you can from more experienced players, you will probably enjoy it just fine.

Always willing to learn from those more experienced than myself. I join the GWJ channel in DOTA2 when I am logged in.

So, it looks like we a getting a fresh influx of new players. It might be time to try to set aside some time for some 5v5 action with the GWJ communities. In the past I think Sunday afternoons worked for people.

It's nothing too complicated. We just try to create some balanced teams to play a couple private matches. The veterans can help with some questions and teaching for some of the newer players - though it can be tough to teach and play at the same time. If we get more than 10, video and I might even try our hand at casting some matches ... either as a real cast or a coach-cast where we pull the team on to an out-of-game voice server.

I WILL CAST THE ENTIRE MATCH AS BANE FROM THE DKRs!

Or not.

The Dota Threads rises.

Maybe I'll cast with Video, since I can't win a match at this point.

It will be like the 2 old guys from the muppets.
