If it doesn't take endgame to scratch that itch, you could just fire up the starter edition and play through an opening zone or two.
It's a double-edged sword. It's a way to play WoW without subbing, but the whole time you'll be thinking "I should just sub and do this on my actual account, because all these characters are essentially throwaways." I have a starter account that I created a few characters on after my account free trial ran out, but it's hard to play with that thought in the back of my mind. Which was probably the whole point of it.
I'm having some trouble with the concept of Draenor. Or Draenor-B or whatever is going on, here. The dark portal is opening into not an alternate Draenor, but the real Draenor in the past, but it has present effects but won't alter the past at all? Nothing presented so far is explaining this in any way that makes sense in even the accepted logical suspension of time travel.
As far as I can tell, Garrosh changing the past splinters off a new timeline, like in Back to the Future 2, except players will be able to travel freely between Present Universe A and Past Universe B.
Devs have frequently said this is not a time travel event.. its a "time travel" event to an alternate version of Draenor. So its not in the past but very much in the present. Actions in this version of Draenor will have no actions to events that have previously occurred.
So like Back to the Future, right?

We're going into the past but it's not time travel. It's ... augh... oh god my head what.
I think I understand the concept thusly - we're traveling to some "bubble" version of Draenor, in the past, that has been created and we can go to. But that's not actually the "past" of Draenor, it's like a copy of it we made in the present (or "was made" whatever as to whom or how)? I feel like Blizzard is just trying hard to say "well technically it's not time travel" because they don't want that label slapped on it. I kind of want to say, "Look, Blizz. It's fine. Wallowing in nostalgia is a fine business decision. Don't get all coy on me, embrace it!"

Honestly, I think the way they're explaining it is pretty awful. It's absolutely a time travel expansion; we're going back 35 years for crying out loud. Thrall is going to be talking to Durotan face to face; Grom and Garrosh will get to have the sitdown that Garrosh has always wanted.
That said, there's a reason that there's no implications for changes in the present; Everything that happened with Thrall's horde still happens. His journeys with Rexxar, the founding of Durotar, yadda. Garrosh's focus is simply stopping the demonic corruption; I don't know that he has the pull to make such sweeping changes and have them last so long.
So, yes, it's confusing as all hell, especially in the face of the Devs screaming "it's not time travel!". But if you think about it, it kinda makes sense.
Players are traveling back to a version of Draenor that makes Blizzard more money.

I literally lol'd.
The more I read the info, it looks like the're very specifically trying to avoid using the terms "time travel" and "alternate reality" except where they can't get around it. I can guess they might just think those are cliche terms and don't want the baggage associated with them.
I think the player garrison sounds pretty interesting. I wonder if there's anything in the works for a guild equivalent. Or did I miss it?
I dunno, I guess I wouldn't see it as much different than helping to earn the guild perks and then getting booted from the guild.
Is there anyone still active on BHA willing/able to let me tag along two chars as they kill stuff if I dual box myself RAF for 300% xp?
I'm not sure what places work best for this these days, probably somewhere with lots of neutral mobs so they don't just one shot me. Dungeons used to work very well for this too and were pretty quick for a high level char to clear.
Being a new account I have nothing to offer in exchange save I'm willing to help you do the same once I'm higher if you like. The last time I did it with a friend we usually got people to run us through dungeons by offering them all the gold and any items they were seeking if dropped but that was ages ago and I'm sure the market has changed.

I'm on Blackhand, and I log in most weekends - though, the guild has been a ghost town the times I've been on. I've got a level 90 toon, she's not kitted out in the best of the best gear (no idea how to actually get that stuff anyway), but I could help you level up via dungeons so long as they aren't too insane.
When are you usually on? Also, I don't believe I've got any sort of guild invite powers if you're looking for that, but that won't be a hindrance to levelling.

I can probably help you. My 'lock is pretty well geared and a good solo-er. Are you starting straight up from scratch? I'm usually on late - past 11PM EST, so that would be when it would mostly have to happen. You should find out the best sequence of dungeons to level in, though - I'm there to kill stuff, just point me in the right direction.

yeah starting from level 1 or whatever i manage to get to doing it solo, I'm stuck here in AST with a schedule that changes each week but it basically amounts to one weekend day and a few evenings free each week. I have French class early mornings M-F so 11pm+ EST would probably be mostly fri or sat.
i'll see if i can make it high enough to access the first instance at least to make things easier
I haven't been on much lately, but still have all my higher level characters on Blackhand.
AFAIK it's player only. (They're not account-wide like everything else will be in 6.0, but player-only, like the Halfhill farm.)
Can you imagine the drama if you help build a guild garrison and get booted from the guild? Guild-bank looting is bad enough.
I don't know, you could make it an in-game event. When a player is booted from the guild the players online can escort the player to the gates of the garrison and he or she can be shunned out the door and into the wilderness!
Maybe even include a nice little cinematic of the guild players throwing rocks at the departing player!
Krev, if you're checking this thread today, I'm online. I might check in on a couple other toons, but if you want me to run you through some quests or dungeons, post here and I'll log back in as Mimble.
err so is there any point in trying to pvp at all? it seems like pretty much everyone is twinked to the max
At lower levels? Not really.
I like what I see of the new models.
