Minecraft Multiplayer: GWJ World

v1.13 server is now up with a new [watery] world
The new version broke the Overviewer, so we won't have a world map until I can figure out a different solution.
But, get in there and have fun!!!

Hello! I'm Infernal's friend and roommate. Can I get whitelisted for the Minecraft server? Name is still glowinthed0rk.

I just got in. I haven't got my bearings, I'm not far but still somewhat lost, and I'm building a tower on top of a snowy peak somewhat nearby. I'm kind of a minecraft perma-noob. I promise to upgrade my digs and not be an eyesore.

My kids got into my game and changed the language to... something. The game client crashes whenever I try to change it back to english. I've learned to accept what I cannot change. I remember what most of the buttons in the menu mean, but not all of them. I can get by in game for the most part.

Masher, you asked us to tell you if the server kept misbehaving.

The server has restarted a couple of time this morning. After this last one I noticed rubberbanding in the stars, which likely means tick lag. Just eyeballing it, I'm guessing about 8 TPS. On a vanilla server, low TPS is usually either lack of memory or heavy load on the server.

That's all I got. Hope it helps.

i'm getting errors like this:

Whew, I'm not alone! I'm so glad to read an english translation, as I was getting that error too.

I'm not sweating the bugs. I'll check back in through the weekend.

Now it's just showing as can't connect in the server picker

Well if anyone wants to play on my bedrock server in the mean time, it still totally works. https://realms.gg/uj5gR8Xbrno

Me too.

Whelp. Looks like there’s some sort of memory issue (as predicted).
I’ve logged a ticket and will try to get the server back up as soon as possible.
Sorry ‘bout this

NP mash, thanks for checking it out.

Still down. Bummer.

What version of M/C is the vanilla server running?

We just updated to 1.13.1 and created a new world. That's when the problems started.
Still working on this with the hosting company.
I hope to have this resolved in the next 24 hours, so will keep you posted.
Thanks for your patience.

OK, I have 'a' server back up. This is a fresh spawn of the same world. I have a backup of the previous one, but wanted to start fresh to see if it was stable. I've done some initial playing around and have seen some "Can't keep up" warnings, but it seems to be hanging in there without crashing.
At this point, I'd like to get a few people on and stress test it a bit more.

If anyone is heavily invested in the previous startup world, I can try restoring that at some point and see if the server remains stable, but there is the possibility we may have to start from scratch.

I’ll hop on tonight after kid bedtime; probably 8-ish EST

Cool! I'm down to test it out when I get home from work, provided I'm whitelisted.

I got a refused connection error when I tried to join the server just now.

Looks like we have at least a stable server. There is some block lag happening, but no crashes. This is a new version of the same world we started on the other day, so the terrain is the same but any work from before won't be there.

Thanks for putting in the work, ButtonMasher.

I grabbed a bed in prep for heading out to homestead. If that's a no-no, let me know.

I'm going to hang around at spawn and try to develop the area a little. Ultimately, I'd love to build a village and wall it in, and if anyone else wants to be involved you're welcome. I already build a road to snake through the spawn plain, and staked out a space for Oddrune (which I think will be an iron farm?) and for me (which I'm going to develop as an Inn) but there's plenty of space around for others to get involved too.

Oddrune, is there a way to develop the iron farm so that it delves down instead of up? As a personal aesthetic preference, I'd rather have a town without massive stretching towers everywhere. But that's also my personal preference, and if others prefer a different vision, I can suck it up.

Iron farms require access to sky so that doors can have a defined inside and outside. They also need to be in an area reasonably free of other doors so that the center of the village doesn't shift too much. If it does shift, iron golems spawn outside of the kill zone.

We don't have to have an iron farm at all. It's not a big deal.

I've claimed a small mountain for a home site. It's a modest distance from spawn, with one corner at 313, -26. I went a distance away because It's a large area. I'd like to preserve a natural view. I'm hoping that will be ok with everyone.

An iron farm would be most helpful. I haven't been finding as much iron as I expected. Perhaps it could be located a couple hundred meters from spawn?

A decent rail system needs LOTS of iron. And the thing with spawn chunks is they are loaded whenever a player is logged in and therefore farms produce wherever the player happens to be.

But then I reckon you knew that

It wouldn't work there -- it has to be in the spawn chunks to be effective.

Well, you can go down, of course, but that just leaves us with a pit -- at least a small one. And it's a lot of excavation work. I can give it a try, but I'll need help with that much mining.

It doesn't have to be a pit. If you orient the doors perpendicular to the center of the farm then you can just have a 1x1 column on the corner that the 5 or so doors on either side face and it can have glass at the top and still work. Example:

Why not just stick with portals instead of sucking up server resources with automation? (Although I guess railways are fun...).

Well see you can use portals AND rails, although I hear the new hotness is either boats going across ice or using captive dolphins to get predictable dolphin's grace combined with depth strider III.
