I just got my third wither skull and am preparing to battle the wither boss!

My plan is to go to my remote mining base in the middle of nowhere and dig a long 1-wide tunnel, at the end of which will be a room where the wither boss will spawn. As it tunnels toward me I'll be shooting it with arrows from the tunnel until it gets to its shield stage. Then I'll hit it with a sword as I back up further.

If things go really bad, I'll have a room full of iron golems far down the tunnel. If it gets past those, I'll rig some TnT charges further on. If it somehow gets past all of that... well... I guess I'll run while crying for help!

FRAPS please.

(This is how we speak with the users!)

Nice. I like the fight AND the beacon.

OVERENGINEERED.

It's boring, but hey... I can rebuild this run and use it multiple times as needed with safety measures still intact.

It took longer to kill it than it should have because I wanted to use the golems. The tunnel was too long, though!

Oh! OK, let's talk about wither mining.
It it too slow? Can you harvest all of the broken blocks, or are some destroyed?
I'd like to spawn a wither down at levels 10-16.

If it was a 4x4 tunnel it carves, and you get all of the blocks, you expose many more blocks in the tunnel left behind.
Any mathematicians who can figure out if this is more efficient.

Probably, the cost of the wither itself is too high.

Okay, I hope I never accidentally run into one of those beasts. lol

And that beacon is epic! I wonder how far away you can see it. Probably as far as your visual horizon is. Really cool. We could use those to mark important locations so we can find them if we're lost.

This was down at that level. Withers can be very destructive on the surface since they'll fly and launch blasts down at you or any other creatures below. Its wither effect (which I avoided) also heals it. It also doesn't despawn.

Since the fight took less than 5 minutes I was able to collect all of the blocks. For some odd reason, experience orbs dropped from the coal blocks as well. You can see this later in the fight.

The Wither blasts a 4-high by 3-wide path and will follow you as long as you keep hitting it. It will also heal itself slowly. I surveyed the area beforehand to check for lava above and to the sides, which could have turned the fight into a nightmare.

The skulls took me four days of killing wither skeletons to farm. Your luck may differ, but it's not very efficient as a mining tool.

Wait wait wait. So, you're using the Wither... to MINE?

I need a while to process this level of insane genius.

I think his intent was to contain the destructive capacity of the wither. The mining was more of a happy side effect

This could be of some help figuring out how to get these suckers to spawn.

My intent is to use the wither to mine.
I explored the idea of TNT mining, but the resource cost is enormous, and the blast destroys some of the blocks. You could destroy diamonds in a blast.

If the wither's blast has the same problem, it, at least, overcomes the ongoing resource cost.

Lava, underground lakes, and caverns are the big question marks.
What happens when you loose containment on the wither?
Could you somehow keep it from getting to those?
If you're mining a 1wx2h tunnel in front of it, you'll have a good idea what's coming.
Lava is the wildcard. It could open up the bottom of a lava lake, and burn itself, and the items you're using it to mine.

Also need a way to get back around behind the wither, out of it's range to harvest blocks before they decay.
If you keep hitting it with a wooden sword, and it heals, it should just keep coming.

Question is, now, can you make it change direction?

If they don't despawn, and you keep it alive, have you essentially got a mining machine parked in a tunnel?

So each attack, the wither mines 12 blocks, and exposes 14 more.
a 3 high branch mine tunnel requires mining 3 blocks to expose 8.

So I guess it's a question of how quickly can you provoke the mining attack, versus how fast can you mine the same number of blocks/expoures; to find diamonds.

Also,
mining ore blocks that yeild something other than ore (gold, and iron) ie coal, redstone, LL (blue stuff) drops XP tokens. Makes sense that the blast does the same.

So, it's also an XP miner. Which helps offset the capital cost.

Not sure who decided who to extend the railway but thanks! It goes more than halfway down to my little house down there.

Holy cow. I can see I've got a giant Eye of the Tiger grade training montage ahead of me.

Seems to me the best way is as a team: someone to lead the wither forward and a clean-up crew to come along behind and pick up everything that gets dropped. If you're willing to use the Overviewer, you should be able to get a preview of any lava lakes, since they show up as lit caves.

it's the only thing in the game external to a player which can cause XP to appear. (I wonder if it does this for mob kills, too?)

Farm rare mob head drops?
Actually, do regular grinders drop heads? or only player kills?

And if it drops XP, does that mean that it converted coal ore, to coal?
Meaning, if it blasts diamond, you won't lose them?

Ghostship wrote:

It will pursue any creature or player. If you had a friend around, they could lead it away. However, its heads can launch at up to 3 independent targets simultaneously.

It won't wander much unless something gets within its range of vision. The problem is, it will chase any monsters that pop up around it and nothing other than bedrock will contain it. If it somehow escapes, it can become a big problem.

TNT and creeper explosions don't drop XP tokens. It's pretty strange that the Wither does, as it's the only thing in the game external to a player which can cause XP to appear. (I wonder if it does this for mob kills, too?)

TNT explosions that destroy coal blocks do in fact drop XP.

The only mobs that drop heads in survival mode are wither skeletons. If it counts as a player kill, they'll drop. However, the wither will destroy the nether fortress as it moves around and targets everything in sight.

None of the blocks it blasted were lost, so diamond should also be safe.

So there's no way to contain it, really. The chance of a mob leading up and into someone's build is unacceptable. Destroying it when you log off is also too high in cost.
I guess an epic mining session on a weekend day may be possible.

Hmmm. Dear Mojang. Please include a Michonne leash in the next feature update.

So end my fantasies of being a Mincraftian beastmaster, cracking a whip at a subjugated mining slave.

I thought the added in the others at the last minute before the pretty scary update?

**edit, checked the wiki**
only in creative. Boo. Why would that not be a feature? xbox approvals?

I needed to make a rail line to my new project. I can extend it to your place if needed. Just need a map image or coordinates.

Oh and speaking of new project:

Me and Einbjorn are working on a giant iron farm. So if you need massive amounts of iron it will be possible... Eventually.

How exactly does one farm iron?

kaostheory wrote:

Something to do with killing Iron Golems, I think. It basically involves getting a bunch of villagers to spawn in a small location, which prompts Iron Golems to spawn. I assume they then fall into a grinder.

This.

We have one already located here..
http://mc.liquidmantis.com/overviewe...

The little windowed boxes on the side of the platform house villagers which prompt a golem to spawn in the middle of the large platform. The water pushes it to a drop in the middle where it is collected into a central feed tube that runs through a lava knife pre damaging the golems, after the lava knife they fall into a collection chamber where the player then steps onto a plate to activate a piston that suffocates the golem. VIOLA! Free Iron... and roses too.

The right hand tower has a cpl floors in the middle that were a failure... and by failure I mean a CATASTROPHIC CRIPPLING FAILURE! The villagers were too close to the ones above/below which created a cascade event of continual copulation betwixt villagers. Anyone close enough to load the chunk became severely crippled by the amount of lag produced by HUNDREDS of villagers being rendered.

The old farm theoretically produces 1 golem every 45 seconds... which is WAY to slow for my tastes, so I proposed a mad scientist scheme to plav whom promptly started to cackle and scheme in his conniving evil way. At any rate the new one we are building (assuming it works as intended) should produce 1 golem every 6 seconds, more in line with my evil plot to obtain complete and utter minecraftian world domina... err I mean ... uhh... Oh hey look, a sheep!

I prefer the cello. It makes for a more satisfying reveal.

If I were trapped in an evil golem slaughterhouse, I'd madly copulate too.

Balls.

Within 30 minutes of each other, creepers spawned in what I thought were very well lit hallways. The first one blew me up in a single blast (full health plus some armor!) deep underground, and by the time I found my way back, all my items were gone The second blew up my just-completed subway line.

Double-post for extra annoyance.

Sometimes they fall into lighted areas after spawning in darker areas above. This happens in chasms all the time.
