Penny Dreadful (Showtime TV series)

Man, Vanessa has the worst taste in men...like, ever.

Well, she knows what she likes. Ethan needs to get back from the Wild Wild West stat and give her a "dangerous supernatural dong" option that isn't sourced in satanic machinations and betrayal.

I was sort of enjoying the build-up to meeting Ethan's father, but the whole resolution to that arc seemed rushed and was somewhat disappointing. Kaetenay stressed that he and Malcolm needed to be there to stop Ethan from entering the darkness, but their actions weren't really pivotable to the death of the witch nor to the final disposition of his father. The witch also seemed to go down way too easy. But Malcolm, at the end, was pure awesome sauce.

I assume we haven't seen the last of Hecate.

I hope that's the case, but the other witches seemed to be vulnerable to physical damage.

Two hour season finale tonight!

It looks like PD got cancelled, though only because the story has been told.

Somewhat of a bummer because it will be that much harder to convince people to watch this show - and I'll have to get my Eva Green fix someplace else.

I had no idea this was the finale two episodes for the series. I really enjoyed them! More shows need to do this! That is, tell your story and then end the series! Too many keep going for the money, and it often shows.

I agree. They told the gorgeous, ludicrous, gothic wedding cake of a story they wanted to tell and it was great.

Just watched the whole season in a few days.
It has its flaws, but it's so enjoyable. It's been a great ride.

Somewhere in the middle of the 1st season I decided I needed to watch this as a single bindge session.
Then great and (well, above average) TV exploded and I didn't have time to see this.

Now that's the 2 season mini series is over (yes, that's how I'm calling it), I'll see it sometime over the summer.

I'm a couple episodes in on season 3 now that it went up on Netflix.

Spoiler:

Dracula is so cool! I think this is the most interesting portrayal of Dracula I've encountered.

We just finished season 1. It's a bit "kitchen sink" at times but man the characters and the acting. This seems to be the modus operandi of horror-themed series though. Put in a bunch of good actors and characters and throw stuff at the wall. AHS certainly has had success with that approach, though a couple of the seasons didn't really work.

I found that the interaction between Victor and Lily was the most compelling. I have been both halves of that relationship from start to finish and it was so fairly portrayed that I found it uncomfortable.

Didn't see a thread for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

We saw the first episode last night and it didn't resonate with me the way the first series did. I'll watch more, but it actually felt more like American Gods without interesting gods.

The show feels more like The Terror than Penny Dreadful.

The latest episode of Penny Dreadful either seems very ill-timed or well-timed. I'm not sure which.

Spoiler:

The LAPD hang a young chicano man.

It was hard to watch, particularly in light of recent events.

Has the new series been any good?

As I said to my wife last night, in the first series we had vampires, wolf-men, Frankenstein, and Dorian Gray. In this one we have swing dancing.

Having said that, Nathan Lane is absolutely carrying the show for me and is a treasure to watch. If they kill him off I might be done. Natalie Dormer is also showing off her acting chops by essentially playing five different characters.

100%

This series has almost nothing in common with the original. It feels like they shoe horned an original script that no one wanted to produce into the Penny Dreadful brand in order to get it made. The paper thin supernatural element could be completely stripped from the story and it would still be the same show.

If it wasn't for Nathan Lane and Natalie Dormer, I would have given up on the season long ago.

I think the main writer is the same person. I've been enjoying it, but it otherwise seems to have no connection and bears little resemblance to the original. I was hesitant at first, but it kept me interested. Nathan Lane and Natalie Dormer have been great.
