Found some references on the insurance. They claim it won't be very expensive. Guess if that's true the game will be worth another look after release, assuming it is priced similar to a normal AAA game.
Of course, then I would just be a "N00b", right? Hmm, and even if I buy a ship still months before release, but not as early....still a "N00b". Got it. Yeah, it sounds like an MMO alright! Granted, Cockpits!!! but still.
Bleh. Well, I missed the deadline, so doesn't matter anymore. Waste of money to be a second class citizen (pun intended).
PvP =/= griefing. Besides, there's no real reward without real danger.
Huh. So always say the PvP hardcore elitists in every online game.
Most of them just say that because they get their rocks off rubbing other people's faces in their misfortune. They don't get enough of a rush otherwise. (10 years of MMO's experience.) Sorry to see it show up here.
Go get yourself shot at or blown up. See what *rewards* you get afterwards for your trouble, if you survive. Only the lucky get to extoll the virtues of taking extreme risks, financial or mortal. And usually they are trying to entice more suckers into getting themselves destroyed for their gain.
Now that I think about that. It sounds like a new concept for Evil Genius 3. I need a new line of work. LOL

It also only covers the hull and default equipment, and we don't yet know how the price of kitting out a ship will compare to that of the base ship. (shrug)

Every PvP argument I've had, and there's been far too many, has involved an anti-PvP'er making vast assumptions about those who PvP. This post is a shining example. You're saying you're sorry to see PvP hardcore elitists who get their rocks off rubbing misfortune in other people's faces... and all I've said is I like PvP and PvP isn't griefing.
I do hope they can manage it so that PvP'ers and non-PvP'ers are both happy in the game. That would be a rare feat indeed.
On games where both modes are supported why fight about it?

Yeah, I'm not sure why we are even fighting to begin with. It's not like anyone is forcing anyone to play the game, or even back it. If you don't like what you see or hear about a game, I *think* there may be some other games to play. I could be wrong, though.
Man, games really *are* serious business.

You! Stop being reasonable!

You are right, of course. Guess I'm just tired of disappointments lately. This game is obviously not something for me. Been a lot of great game concepts lately that just turned out to be MOBA's or microtransaction frenzies. I loved Freespace, Wing commander, Tie Fighter, Mechwarrior/Mercs, X Series. This does nothing for me in that department.
Oh well. I'll leave. At least they didn't get any of my money.
At the height of Jumpgate's popularity, there were a fair amount of pirates. Now, I was the biggest carebear ever. All mining and hauling and missions, no PVP, only PVE and so on. While conducting several freight runs, I'd be beset by pirates in the unsecured sectors which had the best cargo runs, and they'd demand some credits or they'd destroy my ship. If I had the credits I'd pay them, if not I'd offer part of my cargo. Sometimes they didn't want payment, sometimes they wanted a kill on their record.
Sometimes it was really frustrating, as I'd lose an artifact I took a long time finding, but that's the risk part of the risk/reward equation. Sure, again, it was frustrating, but it was also part of the fun. Piracy is a part of of the whole shebang, and if it's handled correctly, as Jumpgate did it, it'll be awesome. I'm not too worried about it.

The pvp slider makes it where the odds of being involved in pvp is slim to none if it's not wanted.

As long as the odds are about the same as real life pvp when I go outside my house, nobody should really complain.
Hard to respect a simulator like this if it eliminates danger from other people in an unrealistic way. At least for me.

Games aren't designed that way.
In all honesty, I think I just need to man up and view PvP as part of the experience, and actually try to enjoy that part of it (I'll stop short of becoming a pirate, though ;-))
I'm usually just too much a pacifist when it comes to PvP, unless there is little to lose, a la most modern FPS multiplayer games, insta-respawn with nothing really lost.
Man, why can't this be released already!
I went through that transition in a big way back when I played my first MMO (Shadowbane). I found that, like most things, PvP is a lot more fun with friends.

Yeah, I think that's the key with just about any online experience, honestly. If you can get a good group to consistently play with, the online stuff is a lot more enjoyable Trying to wade into PvP without at least a little backup is a great way to get super frustrated quickly.
You can still get ganked by NPC pirates in the game. Besides the skill difference between an AI pirate and a player, you're going to have the same basic experience in a dangerous system whether that pvp slider is all the way up or not. The matchmaking they want to use is intended to put players in the positions that would have been taken by NPCs in the game.
Is it MORE fun to get pwnt by AI pirates? I would think it would be more embarassing

It's funny that you mention that. There's a thread on their forums where they're doing algorithms for their ai based on pvp results.

Depends if anyone sees it happen :P
If an NPC blows you up in the middle of nowhere, does it make a sound?
Of course not! No one can hear you scream in SPAAAAAAAACE!

And if anyone asks--you totally got ganked by a whole group of griefers
(Am I even using those terms correctly? I have no idea)
So how do I buy a corvette? It seems to me that more bigger is more better. At least until it gets blown up and then I cry for a while (spot the former EVE player).
I'm in. Signed up last year. Have not really looked at it again since so I have no idea what I'm doing with it.
Edit - Okay apparently I have a scout pack.

If someone ganks you doesnt mean they're griefers.

They should set it up so that when people in your friends list or Wing(?) gets their ship disabled, it should show up in your news feed. Including the time, location and by whom. Good way to encourage a retrieval salvage run with said friend. After you stop laughing that is.
