Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Butt Slam-All

It was already mentioned in the Borderlands 2 thread, but with screenshots and other info out now, figured it deserves its own thread:

Set between Borderlands and Borderlands 2, you’ll play as four all-new character classes fighting alongside Handsome Jack, witnessing his transformation into the ruthless tyrant you loved to hate in Borderlands 2, and assisting with the rise of the Hyperion Corporation. The signature shoot ‘n’ loot gameplay of the Borderlands series expands with the addition of low-gravity and oxygen-powered jetpack combat, the icy ‘Cryo’ elemental damage type, the deadly laser weapon class, and new vehicles to help you explore the diverse lunar landscape.

The four new playable character classes are all familiar faces from the Borderlands universe: Athena the Gladiator (The Secret Armory of General Knoxx), Wilhelm the Enforcer (the robotic badass of Borderlands 2), Nisha the Lawbringer (The Sheriff of Lynchwood in Borderlands 2), and yes, even Claptrap the Fragtrap (from just about everywhere... unfortunately).

"The game will launch on the platforms that all Borderlands customers are familiar with," he said. "So it's Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, and there is not a next-gen version of this. One hundred percent of the budget and the investment and the resources and the talent that have been invested into Borderlands Pre-Sequel have been spent to create content, have been spent to iterate technology from the Borderlands 2 engine. So none of the investment has gone toward creating new technology. None of the investment has gone towards figuring out how new platforms work. It's all about creating, focusing that energy on creation of entertainment and playable entertainment.

Cool. I love Borderlands, its one of the few I boot up every now and then (those stupid SHIFT CODES are insidious). I was wondering when they would ever make it up to that moon base, since its such an omnipresent thing in Borderlands 2.

I was watching the Rev3 games preview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVSa...) and the one thing that I'm a bit leery about is the need for oxygen in some of the environments. Its neat that you can use it to prolong jumps and such, but I usually hate what is essentially a time limiting mechanic, as I generally tend to be pretty slow and methodical.

In terms of lore, it will be interesting to see how the story progresses as all the playable characters save claptrap end up as villains.

I'm a huge Borlderlands fan, but due to the following:

- Gearbox's (specifically Pitchford's) recent dishonest actions
- The developer interview video implied that this new game is being made by 2K Australia instead of Gearbox
- Anthony Birch is only partially involved with the writing of the new game's script

I think this will be the first Borderlands game that I don't buy on day 1, if I buy it at all.

But how many guns will it have?

Damn I love the art direction in the Borderlands universe.

Nothing to say except I'll likely be on the wait for the GotY package bandwagon, if I get this one.

I don't know what it is... but in hindsight, I really enjoyed Borderlands 1 more than Borderlands 2. I thought I was a big fan of the series, but something about the gameplay or design in BL2 threw me off. Content-wise, I think this is about Handsome Jack and I didn't find him to be a very interesting character.

The whole no next gen thing sort of bums me out here. And it tells me that they aren't interested in doing much more than new content if they are not going to port it to new systems. It sort of has that BioShock 2 stink all over it. At least they didn't pass it off to Obsidian

I will probably get it if I am not too busy with Destiny and The Division this fall

But they apparently passed it off to 2K Australia, who worked on BioShock 2, if that matters to you.

Maybe you didn't read the other article from the BL 2 thread?

1) It is for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. That means no new engine, no graphical upgrades to speak of, no element whatsoever of being a next-gen Borderlands. The primarily reason for this, apparently, is that the majority of Borderlands’ fanbase is sitting pretty with a last-gen console. More copies of Borderlands 2 have been sold than have Xbones and PS4s combined. Anyway, consoles, whatever.

I agree with you. I LOVED BL1 but didn't finish BL2, it just didn't grab me. I think it was too much backtracking, re-tracking, traveling between locations and the design of the maps.

The counter argument that I have seen popping up is that current cross gen titles (Thi4f, Metal Gear Solid) are selling much more on next gen consoles than current gen. The figures for Thi4f I saw showed like 2-3 times as much sold on X1/PS4 as 360/PS3. So the thinking is: ONLY HARDCORE NEOGAFEUROGAMERSPOT DUDEBROS ARE BUYING GAMES AT ALL AND WE ALL HAVE MOVED ON ALREADY SO CATER TO US MOTHERF****RS!!!

Oh there's always an argument to be made.

New console X doesn't have any games, I'm not buying it. Well if someone would make games for console X I would buy it. But producers don't want to green-light a game if there's not a big enough user base. But if they would just make games the user base would get bigger. And round and round we go.

Generally it's left up to the 1st party team to make a system-seller game. Can't rely on 3rd party for that. Gearbox is not in the business of promoting PS4/XB1.

I think I was burned out on BL before I got to BL2. I didn't get very far into the Lillith quest chain before I got distracted by something else shinier. So I think I'm very likely to be staying away from this one until reviews come in and I've actually finished BL2.

I think the reason I didn't play through BL2 beyond the first playthru (and a half), is similar to what you described, in that I was probably burnt out a bit. I had played through BL1 3+ times already and maybe there just wasn't enough new to make the whole experience fresh in BL2. It just leaves me a bit wary for this prequel/sequel.

I don't mind the whole current gen / next gen angle.. I still have the 2 360's in the house and (just personally), I'm happy with the pc gaming landscape enough that Xbox one and ps4 don't have the same pull as previous generations.

The changes from Borderlands to Borderlands 2 felt a lot like the new Diablo III patch to me. As in, it turned it from something I enjoyed, played through once, and moved on from, into something I can continually come back to and enjoy.

I'm also baffled by finding Handsome Jack uninteresting, personally I feel like he's probably the greatest villain I've seen in a game since GLaDOS. He definitely puts the laughably bad moustache twirlers in Diablo III to shame. Azmodan wouldn't feel out of place in a Scooby Doo episode.

No accounting for taste.

I can't wait for this. It looks great in every way.

Agreed. The plot in BL1 was completely unforgettable for me, but Handsome Jack is a large part of the reason why I actually enjoyed the plot of BL2. The writing and voice acting for Handsome Jack was quite good IMO. He is such a good villain in the "love to hate him" sort of way. The fact that this new game focuses on that character is the main reason I'm interested in the game, despite my reservations previously mentioned.

The only time I'm going to spend full money on a game is when I'd be incredibly excited to play it with you all the second it comes out...so...when's it coming out?

The DLC for Borderlands 1 felt like a way to prolong what I liked about the main game, but at a much lower level, at least for me.

Some of the DLC for Borderlands 2 felt even better, to crazy better, than the side missions in the main game. It also scratched some deep OCD part of me that wanted to know where all of the hidden vault symbols, easter eggs, and just weird random crap could be found. I'm sure I overplayed B2 last summer but...damn it was fun. And the second some Goodjer pal o' mine bought it on sale, I'd be all like, "NOW I CAN PLAY IT AGAIN. I'M NOT BOTHERIN' YOU AM I?"...

This Fall (2014).

No next gen?

pass

Because if it's not next gen, it's not fun.

You can (mis)quote me on that.

No, because like most things when i upgrade, I dont keep the old one.

in console world, especially with this generation, this is proving a mistake because of the lack of stuff to play on new consoles and continued life on old consoles.

But the reality is that many people upgrade, not keep both. Without backwards compatibility we now are fragmented.

I only say pass because I own a PS4, not a PS3. if this were a month after new gen, sure. But it will be a year later.

According to your Steam profile (which is linked in your sig), you played BioShock Infinite on your PC or Mac. If your computer can run that game, surely it can run this new Borderlands game, so you don't have to "pass" just because it won't be released on PS4.

Just sayin'.

Yeah, I can't give a good response without sounding like a jerk. Suffice it to say, I keep all my old consoles.

Also, PSNow (game streaming) is still supposed to eventually be a thing by this summer, right? Maybe you can go that route?

OK ok sheesh...

I am not being antiborderlands here. If i play it it will almost definitely be on PC (even if i owned a PS3 still). I love the series and this looks just as good.

I just hate how next gen is being ignored. When this comes out it will be damn near a year after the new consoles come out. \

I am just being selfish, but I have a shiny new thing so i want more shiny new things to play. A next Gen Borderlands? YES. A borderlands on yesterdays machines? um sure, I guess....

Its great that you do. I can only assume though that many don't. I am didn't mean to imply I can't play it. By pass I meant I am just not that interested based on what its specced for. I have played over 100 hours in BL2. I don't need more of that.

Cobble wrote:

This isn't the next-gen Borderlands you're looking for. Borderlands 3 is probably 2-3 years away.

Hopefully be enough of a departure from the previous games to warrant a purchase, sounds like it has some interesting idea's but will wait for the reviews for this one. Dying for a full blown sequel using a new engine taking advantage of the PC, PS4 & XBone. This will sell next to nothing on the PS3/360 though, that is way too late to be releasing a game on the last gen consoles & expect it to sell well at all. PC version should shift a fair amount.

Maybe this will be the Assassins Creed: Brotherhood of Borderlands games. Basically a glorified expansion pack to the last game but somehow better.

Also, next-gen hasn't even been out a year yet.

To be fair, besides Dark Souls II, this has been - I believe - the only current gen exclusive so far. And based on how places like gamestop, target and best buy seem to be liquidating their stock with sales recently, the B&M stores are gearing up to support next-gen over current gen.
