Elite Dangerous Catch-All

The official forums are down due to load. Good sign?

Yeah, wait guys. Tomorrow's launch will likely require more patching and such.

UNLESS you want the pre-order goodies like the Free Eagle. ;)

I don't think you're helping, Veloxi.

I do think, in general, that you'll see some mixed reactions to the release version, so waiting until the first round of content updates is probably worth it if you're really on the fence. I'm in this for the long haul, but not everyone has my peculiar and unique set of interests. (There seems to be a slight overlap with Veloxi's interests.)

Edit:

Looks like they've updated the subforums; there's some new sections and gamma discussion has been archived...

Wife was going to get this for me for christmas, but I decided to preempt the present and got the pre-order for 10 bucks cheaper. Might as well since I know I'll get it. I'll probably wait to install it until a few days after release so the servers can settle down. I'll make sure to add my name to the GWJ roster once I get there.

Ok, newbie badass moment.

I was flying my second mission ever, deliver some stuff to a market. Enroute I get interdicted, and I beat his ass down. Turns out he had a bounty of 2300Cr on him, which I got!

Woohoo!

Had my first in-game text and voice comms with Fogrob tonight. The effect is really cool but you'd think a civilization with FSD tech would have better than Apollo era voice communications.

Got set up, refitted, and re familiarized with how to fly. I made it out to chango and will see you guys tomorrow!

Stupid question, if you die do you lose your money, or just the ship?

Just the ship. You can choose to get the ship back by paying about 10% of the purchase price, so technically you can also lose money. If you do that, you'll respawn in it at the last starbase you docked at. If you don't feel like losing money, you can respawn in a starter Sidewinder, all your other ships and assets intact.

Well, I've got to say it was nice of the Kerbal Space Program people to release the beta in time to me to goof around with it while I'm waiting for the servers to settle down.

I'm right there with you. It looks awesome, but part of me is saying, "Just wait until after the Holidays and see what people are saying then."

This is exactly where I am. I really wanted to jump into this after all that I've seen, but I will wait and see. If that means I miss out on the mercenary extra goodies, so be it.

Maybe you just need a little more of a push........ Take a look

That's a little video I made a couple months (and betas) ago, showing a little dogfighting with the power of Voice Attack. Play with audio on, and not around kids (just a little bit of salty language)

Ok, I cleaned up the voice attack profile I use, and updated the google doc I have that lists all the commands I have for it so far, so if anyone wishes to use a copy of it, just let me know.

Wow, might have just sold me on voice attack.

Anyone on the fence:

This is a space freelancer game in the vein of Wing Commander Privateer. If you like this genre this is hands down the best game in it. Ever.

I love this genre. I paid double for early access and if I lost my hands in a freak porridge accident tomorrow and never got to play anything but the beta ever again I'd still consider it money well spent.

What's going to make or break this for you is your attitude to freelancer games like Privateer or Mount and Blade. If you need the game to direct your fun you're gonna have a bad time. If you like to play in a game rather than through a game you're gonna love it.

I predict the following is going to unfold starting tomorrow:

- The servers will go down, and become spotty at least for a week
- Because Elite is a thick client, within a few months the world will become dominated by dupers and instagibbers in maxed-out ships
- Also because Elite is a thick client, the pirated version of the game will be cracked within 3 months, and offer a proper single-player experience, unaffected by hacked prices and inventories from the single-player-online mode

I'm in. Bought the Mercenary edition tonight and hope to get some stable time in tomorrow.

It launches in 2 and a half hours and I've taken the day off. Of course now my son is saying he's sick and needs to stay home.

I could scream.

Is anyone actually expecting it to be playable today?

Not sure it's been mentioned yet but you've seen the BBC Micro keyboards near the side panels in the Cobra, right?

Oh man.. Just had my first player pirate me. I dropped cargo for him and he left me crippled anyway. had to self destruct.

Best bit? was my last run before trading up to my Cobra. Took a punt and had pretty much all my capital in cargo. lol.

Such is life out there in the void I guess.. Still, got my Adder and a bit of an insurance bill. Better than 'starting' in a Sidey I guess.

That dude must had had a pretty kickass interdictor too, I had the circle centred, and could do nothing other than watch the red bar grow. Made no difference. Figured I might be in it a bit deep around that point of time!

Looooooooved the video. Love that voice interaction and the music. That is seriously cool

What kind of setup are you running to be able to do the voice interaction, looking around the cockpit and are you using a joystick and throttle? You guys keep saying HOTAS? What's that?

Elite Dangerous 1.0 should be available in 9 minutes

Voice commands are handled by Voice Attack - 3rd party application that costs $8 - it maps voice commands to key presses.

HOTAS is a 'Hands on Throttle and Stick' meaning you have a joystick and a throttle controller.

Looking around the cockpit can be done with a Head Tracking device such as TrackIR, EDTracker, some people have some success with FaceTracNoIR and a webcam.

Downloading the full game now (only had the merc edition) and I'm getting almost 5mb/s down. I think that may work off torrenting anyway but still... nothing seems to be going up in flames yet.

It is P2P distribution, yeah.

Clients are patched, just waiting on the servers letting people in

/me explodes

EDIT: It's live!
