Elite Dangerous Catch-All

Just stopped myself.

Note to self - thumbs in the eyes next time, not finger........etewatkka

So I spent most of my day playing with absolutely ZERO to show for my time. I died 3 times - all 3 times I died while docked in the hangar and buying or selling goods. Apparently, I either just randomly blew up or someone crashed while docking and killed me despite being below ground in the hangar. Credits are hard to come by - I was ecstatic when I turned my 1000 into 3000 - yay me and then - F*cking boom (in the dock), 3 f'ing times. It's a fun game and does space sims proud when it works, but getting killed while docked and losing your ship and all your goods is just a deal breaker for me. Maybe when Braben has his sh*t together on some simple things like collision detection.

So is this a true Elite with Newtonian physics, or is it another submarines game? The sounds didn't sound promising.

True Elite with Newtonian physics and all. I use flight assist because the physics model is beyond me. I use the thrusters so I can still slip slide and reverse fly a la BSG if I want to. The game is fun, but it is like the old Elite, you are fragile early on.

Yeah, dropping out of frameshift drive seems buggy as all hell. Sometimes you sit there and shake for 5 seconds, sometimes 5 minutes. Often with a CTD.

C'mon, unenable me, dammit !

I know these feels but I can't recommend it for this price in its current state.

I'm mixed on that. I've thoroughly enjoyed it despite my frustrations. Apparently there is a bug that can spawn another ship in your landing Bay. From a complete game perspective, you're probably right. From a complete package, ie getting to play Elite early, the DLC, and the chance to provide input and experience I'm pretty happy with my purchase. The biggest draw back is going to be new players who are used to games that make you powerful early, you are going to have to work at it. There is a lot of satisfaction in making a good trade run and figuring out a good circuit. The economy is very simplistic at this time, but you can see what they are trying to do. The flight model is awesome and the planets are amazing. There is definitely a time investment to get the most out of the game. Early on you can run away from anything, just turn in opposite direction, boost twice and then hit super cruise. You only have to fight if you want to.

My problem isn't with the slow grind stuff, that's Elite.

My problem is with the game locking up 1 out of every 4 times I drop out of super-cruise. When you're trying to run your trade routes you want to get that meditative flow on. The crashes break you out of it.

You guys are bug testing, ya know? It sucks, but they've got to get these bugs ironed out and you guys are the ones to do it.

Sounds like a real beta, not a "we're pre-releasing and calling it a beta so that we can charge more". I want to crack, but will not.

100% agreed and is a known issue they are working on. I just give it 3 minutes and force close and relog. Breaks immersion but I knew what I was getting into. I vented yesterday on my randomly exploding in space stations so I know all about the frustration. There are some decent tips on the forums plus a link to their fledgling manual.

If you like using voice commands that voice attack video and the actual software worked incredibly well. I actually like it better for some things like bringing up certain menus (side panels) then using the joystick. If also like to see them streamline some things like establishing comms with the stations. Id also rather have the ability to superimpose the side panels on the viewscreen rather then having to go heads down in the cockpit. More journeys for certain functions would be nice but I think he is trying to replicate certain pilot actions for immersion. Nice in theory, but in application makes some things onerous.

Yeah, well, lockups and CTD on core game functionality doesn't jibe with premium access beta to me.

Not saying I feel ripped off, just that I wouldn't recommend the premium beta at the current price.

Understood. I got it because I've been dying to play and the DLC. The DLC is the gamble.

I am merely pointing out that this is still very much beta for those who are on the fence.

I really need to wait for a single-player version. But I love all the talk in the meantime.

Im not sure there is a SP version other then the SP scenarios. Maybe I missed it in the discussion and design. I think you can "solo" but I think its MP based with SP options within the game. I could be wrong.

Gah - cracked. Downloading.

Damn really thought there was an sp version...

Congrats

Question 1 - Is there any way I can change the installation drive/folder ? I've got the first part downloaded, but once I hit the 'install' button it tries to install on my boot drive, upon which there is insufficient room. Any ideas ?

Youll enjoy it - let me know if you need any tips or have questions. I thing I have most of the basics cracked now. I'd start trading until you get several thousand credits - at least 10K and then keep doing it. Once you do that - always keep 5K saved because if you die - starting with 100-500 credits means you might as well start over. You can setup a decent trade run hitting all the planets or focus on just two that synch pretty good. I have a nice route I run between several of them. There is also a decent run between just two. In the beta forums a fellow posted a trade guide but I havent got around to reading it. Only one place buys alcohol and thats Freeport in the JP (something system), but alcohol turn a nice profit.

- I go from (Start point, something like Eridan (sp)) agriculture planet (alcohol) to JP (I forget the name but it has 2 letters and numbers, station is Freeport)
- Freeport is extracting (buy Coltan or Rutile) and go to Dahan system (Dahan is refining)
- Buy metals if you want to trade with AP (the high tech world) or alloys and plastics if you want to trade with iBootis.
- At AP you can buy animal monitors and then fly to Eridan (start point) and repeat, you can do the same at iBootis just buy different goods (I think i was doing appliances or something - you'll know by the price)

You can also go between iBootis (buy fish- I think) and Dahan as as a single run.

Basically AG worlds will buy consumer goods and tech
Extraction worlds to refining worlds
Refining worlds to either industry or high tech depending on the goods
There are some specialty products like fish that will fetch a good price as well if you buy it low. I look for things way under the industry average (common sense I know)
++ Only the independent world (Freeport station) will buy alcohol
++ Goods you pick up in space (cargo scoop) can only be sold on the blackmarket, blackmarkets only in Eridan (sp) and Freeport, if you get scanned you will get killed carrying that stuff.
--- If you get interdicted - loop away (180 deg) and power to engines twice, boost (tab/afterburner) twice, and hit supercruise (c) - you will outrun anything and supercruise will eventually charge up.
--- Docking - align yourself so the station is rotating down - the entry will always be to the right of that. Cruise in - come to a complete stop over your numbered dock area and use the up/down, left/right thrusters to "park" - the guide in the bottom center will chirp accordingly and light blue when properly aligned - use down thruster to gently settle in and you'll be docked.

--- Have fun.
Thats about it for early tips

We'll have to get some co-op happening at some point then dave. Being in similar timezones and all.

For a starting low-cash trade route I'd recommend running Cotton from Azeban City to Chango Dock and returning with Clothing.

Got it installed (finally) and killed some dangerous containers and a single crappy ship. Now to work out how to get my AV8R stick working

If love to do that as well. Not sure how to actually find someone you already know. Anyone know how to actually name your pilot? The CDR# thing has to go.

So is it going to require an "always on" internet connection?

A couple of more things I forgot.

For jumping to lightspeed, lock your target - typically a planet (I usually do it before I leave the station), now depart and line it up in the little reticle, lower HUD, upper right, the yellow line is the target, if it's thick is in front of your, if it's thin it's behind you. Go to max speed, full engines and boost a couple of times and you'll be out of the mass restriction of the planet of station. Don't forget to retract your gear and scoop. Now jump, one you come out of warp immediately loop to put the sun behind you and bring up navigation and select the station and lock it. You'll depart the wormhole in super cruise, so now that you've looped and locked the station, orient yourself and head to the station. About 40-50ls out, pull your throttle back about half and decrease speed until you get to about 20ls and then reduce sore again, to about (. 15c) and then play with it until about 10ls out and then just drop until you are around 1000km per sec. Once you are within 20k drop your speed so that you are going less than 200km/s, the speedometer and speed will turn blue. This means when you get within 200km of your target you can press c and drop out of cruise within 20k of your target. Take practice but easier than it sounds.

Hmmm. So if it's primarily mp, then getting now might be good.

Best I can tell from the reading on the site I've done. Can't find any way to find any other players or chat at this point. I believe its 32 player instance in the current limited configuration. It's nearly impossible to get ganked unless you decide to stay and fight or just get unlucky while exploring. If someone is silent, it takes time to power up, so as soon as you see a blip turn and run away

I take it you found the workaround that involves creating a "Products" folder under the Launcher? I had the same issue and that took care of it.
