Elite Dangerous Catch-All

So, as someone who preferred the travelling and trading/upgrading aspect of previous Elite titles, rather than the combat, do you think this game would still scratch that itch?

I've gambled €120 on it

Good stuff, let me know how the payout on that works out for ya

omni, the answer to your question doesn't quite exist yet. The larger, open world aspect of the game is coming out this week (right?).

Yeah, Friday.

Still trying not to scream at how much cash I dropped on this....

Holding out... I am still the master of my domain.

No... No, not that at all...

I know Orphu is using a controller as well.

I started with a config that someone posted in the Frontier forums for the Logtich Extreme 3D pro, then tweaked it for myself. It works pretty well with the keyboard, but I still ended up ordering a separate throttle to go with it. I also have FaceTrackNoIR working with a webcam. Since multiple-input support wasn't added until Alpha 3, and the Premium Beta only gets you Alpha 1, I'll have to wait until Friday to see how well it all works together.

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6279 is kind of old, but still has a lot of good info on how reputations and such will work in the game. There are four ways to get an Elite rating: kills, wealth, diplomacy, and exploration.

First I thought this was build in. But the guy uses voice attack software. Still cool though.

So today I bought one of these second handed. Was a great deal that I couldn't pass on after having pre ordered Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen.

I think a lot of what he does could be done faster with a keystroke or joystick button, but it would be useful for a few things. Looks like the software is $8.

Beta client has been released... and there was much rejoicing.

Ooooooh!

Ooooooh!

I think Maq is humping the beta release.

If you are in the premium beta now, you can reserve your Commander name: http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18389 There was actually a hiccup in the process, so if you submitted a reservation before yesterday, you probably need to do it again.

Yeah, I should stay out of this thread. I've got a couple of vacations coming up and really should be better with my budget.

Others may be having a different experience with the game today, but for me the multiplayer has been pretty much unplayable. I had one CTD and two forced shutdowns because the game would basically lock up. It's definitely a lot rougher than I was expecting based on alpha streams and videos I've watched.

Some thinks:

It's Elite: you fly from place to place and try not to get blown up on your way in.

It's Elite: docking is hard.

I'm glad I watched a video about the different drives because frameshift is confusing.

In fact none of the in-game keybindings are available in-game so I might want a cheat sheet open somewhere.

There's not much going on at the moment, which is probably a good thing because I'd be dogmeat in a real fight.

There are glimpses of great depth here.

This is not a crossover hit. I'd recommend it for fans of the original and for freelancer game fans in general though.

must not crack.......must not crack........

Aaaaaand got ganked. Back to the beginning again.

Who are you kidding?

Can you play single player?

Not per definition. But you can play solo and have fun.

As a veteran of the original Elite....probably no one

It's definitely soloable as a trader. Slowwwwwww going. There definitely needs to be a cheat sheet somewhere for commands. Voice attack software works great. It is very buggy and susceptible to crashing. I have zero problems docking but don't know how you do it without a joystick, use flight assisting a must for me and then the thrusters, up, down, side to side. Use the guide heat pops up in the middle of the screen (lower) and use audio cues. You don't actually touch down, you get close and hear the steady tone, cut thrust, and wahlah.

The game is not forgiving.

I was making solo trade runs. I guess I picked the wrong spot to go trade.

Getting the hang of landing with mouse and keyboard but there's problems with taking off. To wit the gimbal isn't centred when the docking clamps release, so you end up headbutting the landing bay.

My biggest issue now is timing my jumps so I don't have to keep adjusting to get close enough to the station. My biggest gripe is how long it takes to come out of a jump. I can be looking at a shaky screen for upwards of two minutes.

Tough doing trading with only 4 cargo slots. Making a couple hundred credits a run is slow, mind numbingly slow.
