The Golf Club

Has anyone tried this? It's $35 on Steam for early access, but it seems to have some awesome features. Randon generated courses, course editor, unique control method, multiplayer, etc. I've been thinking about it, but if nobody else is biting, I might as well forget it.

Unfortunately it has a lot features, but most of what I have read about the actual gameplay is not great. I think they tried to do too much with a first release.

I'll check it out once it drops for the consoles, but I'm not holding my breath. Have you been playing Powerstar Golf for the XB1? It is surprisingly fun and strategic. There are quite a few of us playing. I have lot more folks on my leaderboards for it than Trials, at least.

Yeah, I have Powerstar Golf but haven't spent a ton of time with it. I know it's been over a month since I last booted it up. I never cared for the 3 click swing, I wish it would let me use the thumbsticks like Tiger Woods, but you can't have everything.

I like using the analog sticks, but the truth is, the never amounted to experience that the mouse swing accomplished in PGA 2000. EA hired those guys for TW, but it was always too easy to hit straight. TW 11 got it close by using TrueAim, but it sold like poop and never returned.

What I had read from guys playing the beta is that the game had the same problem.

I reluctantly accepted the three click in PS Golf and soon found it to be more fun and strategic than the analog sticks of TW. It would be cool to see if they add analog stick swings in a future version, though.

Maybe The Golf Club will turn out better than I expect. It would be nice to have golf sim on the next ten consoles.

I picked it up. It is "early access" in every sense of the word. I enjoy it for what it is and I hope that they deliver on the feature set they are promising.

My only complaint is it seems to be console focused. While mouse and keyboard are usable, the game is clearly designed for gamepad use.

Does it give a gamepad option? Or is early access just strictly PC mouse and keyboard?

Yes. You can use a gamepad. That's probably the preferred method in the current build.

I've got my eye on this if only for the course generator.

I bit and got it on sale 15% off because of the course generator. I'm not a simulated golf player, I'll confess I'm more Mario Golf than, say, Tiger Woods PGA Tour. A lot of the people playing TGC right now are EA Sports golf castaways. All the same, even with a gamepad there is a STIFF learning curve. Missed shots are unforgiving, plain and simple, and it's tough to get feedback on what shots are good or not. I'd love to see them implement a driving range/some sort of practice ground to get a feel for the controls.

Course-wise, it's very black-and-white. The standard courses are either bland, easy walks-through-the-park or brutal rage-quit-on-the-fourth-hole-after-your-sixth-water hazard/tree strike. Some people have really taken to the course creator, but it's still a work in progress in a lot of senses. They don't have real-life courses available, but it won't be long before people create them, I think it's possible to do a believable job with it.

The only gameplay option right now is per round; they intend to add in tours and tournaments later on. I haven't tried live multiplayer, if it even exists; I always turn off the ghost balls when I play a round, I don't need to see someone's -21 round while I'm five-putting a par 3. It's a fairly stable core of a game, no crashing or crippling glitches. I think it has a ton of potential, but I'm perpetually naive and optimistic about games.

I agree. And I'm a tiger woods cast off. I still like the EA game quite a bit, but very rarely do I use my consoles any more. So i bought this game.

I think, before they implement a practice system, they need to correct the controls so they are 1 to 1. More than a few times the input was a problem for me resulting in either a ridiculous over swing or a little dribble.

Once that happens I would like to see, as you point out, some form of feed back on power and distance. I appreciate the minimalist view because when I play golf I don't have a grid in the putting surface. I estimate the terrain and distance and adjust my putt accordingly. However this game you basically are guessing. So while they may not want to hold your hand completely, a simple power gauge would be nice.

Any further news or comment's on this game? Getting better? Insanely hard to putt? etc.

Thanks

I picked it up yesterday after reading a (Polygon?) article which was optimistic. So far I'm really enjoying it, I'd certainly recommend it for $35. I thought the gameplay was not any more difficult than I remember EA golf titles being in the past (using an xbox controller). It's a little lonely though, so please friend me up.
I don't find the social aspect very intuitive so I'm not even sure how to add someone as a friend but that's likely just me being dense.

So, I bit recently and I'm incredibly impressed with how good it is for a first time golf game. Putting will take some finesse (stupid putting) but otherwise everything was incredibly intuitive.

I'm interested in seeing how the social features integrate into the game as that will likely make or break it for me in the long run.

Figured I'd bump this thread by mentioning that the game is now out of Early Access on Steam. It was pretty solid even during the Early Access phase, and they plan to continue working on it. I'll have to give it a try sometime soon to see if it feels any smoother from the last time I tried it. Also to try out the Links theme, for some reason I was really excited to see that as an option...

It's also available for sale right now in Xbox One for $35. I think the PS4 gets it next week. It is download only.

As much as I would like a bunch of us to play, I'm not sure $35 is a deal. I can't run but at medium graphics, but looks good. (I had to lessen graphics to get a smoothe swing). The physics looks good and hopefully MP will be worth it. I see allot of positive reviews, but some bad ones too (as expected ). I (and others) am confused on how to access friends etc.

Now I have to say I've only played a couple hours and enjoy it (I use a xbox controller too. Mouse was hard for me). But MP needs to be easier to understand and execute.

Oh yea. I'm talking PC version. I'm sure MP is much easier on consoles.

Putting is as frustrating as it is in real life.

I have a love/hate relationship with it.

Btw, I picked this up on PS4 because why not?

I was going to ask you how matchmaking is, but then I realized this is on the PS4 and I just have the 3 so ...
But do you see allot of folks playing it? (oh, important aspect, is the PS4 have better on-line connectivity then the 3 does?)

And putting as hard on console as PC. I'm not sure that is a good thing or not. It's good to have a 'realistic' kind of sim, only thing is, not many of us can practice hours and hours to get it down.

Haven't bothered with mp, but exactly 0 of my friends on PS4 have this.

Putting is the same. The whole game seems the same, really.

And then there were two!

I haven't fired the game up in months, I should since I paid a bunch of money for it.

Nyxs and I picked this up on steam for the 50% off deal. I was struggling with it for the first round, but after 54 holes, I finally started playing better. There are worse ways to spend a Friday evening than video game golf with Goojers.

When I can spare a solid 20-30 minutes and I just want to relax, I start this up and do a round of 18. Very solid, and the pace helps me settle down after a long day.

I played a tournament or two last week and man, some online players are hitting scores of -15 pretty consistently. The best I could muster was -8 on the Black Brook course, but generally speaking I usually get around -2 or -3.

How many GWJers are on PC? I'd love to see how the multiplayer works.

When playing last night, it worked like a normal golf game...after I hit the "turns enabled" button. You can also play against a friends ghost in case you can't schedule a time to play live. I think a goojer tournament would be really fun.

Feel free to add me on steam, if we're not already. I'll also find out if we already have a steam group, and make one if we don't.

I've been having a lot of fun with this game. I've created two courses. If you'd like to try them out on pc.

Nyxs swamp - easy marshy course
Nyxs forest - medium forest course

Look me up if you want a game. Multiplayer is neat.

Thanks to Nyxs for hooking me on this. Without him, this would not have happened...

Is that the putt-putt EXTREME! course?

This game led me to buy a wired Xbox 360 controller. Completely different game versus keyboard and mouse.

I'm West Coast and try to get on as much as I can. Having opponents would be great incentive.

Send me a Steam invite!

Does anyone have it on PS4?

Would anyone be interested in a GWJ golf tournament? I don't believe the game has cross platform compatibility, so this would be for the PC version.

I did a little research and found out we can create tournaments and just add in the number of rounds. I was thinking 3 rounds with a 7 day time limit? From the first test one I set up, it looks like we have to be steam friends, but we don't have to play at the same time. Thought it might be a fun little distraction for us, so if you're interested, let me know!
