Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup - The Soupening

--snip great training infoz from Merphle--

Roger that -- Done.

I'm stuck, now. I'm in the Ice Cave and it's asking me if I _really_ want to walk in that room. For all I know, it's insta-death, so I don't want to chance it without some knowledge recon.

I thought about digging through the wall to get to one Ice Statue, but I only have 3 charges and I see this wand as a good "Oh F***" wand so don't want to waste them.

Can I walk in that room and get to the statues and kill them? I don't have resist cold gear. I have a ton of un-identified scrolls, but only one Identify scroll on me right now. I do have 3 scrolls of Fog which I read can help get rid of/prevent cold fog or something.

You probably don't want to walk into that room without some Cold resist. If you have a resist potion that might last long enough. Else I would proabably back away. I just lost a lvl12 Gargoyle fighter to a very similar setup, it was actually a bit easier as the second ice statue couldn't hit me if I moved next to the other statue. Still died from the Bolts of Cold though.

The fog might keep the second statue from hitting you (it will loose LoS from the fog) for a bit while you take out the first statue. But it's a gamble that you could finish off one statue fast enough.

Well, crapola. If I exit this place, does the entrance close on me? I hate leaving something behind that I can't get back to.

Whoa! I just remembered. I'm wearing a ring of cold resist. It says rC+. Does the single + mean level 1 resist? I could run in and try to kill one and see what happens...

Statues do not regenerate, so you theoretically could step one tile in, and throw rocks or something at them. Assuming you have no throwable items, you still totally should be able to kill them one at a time, don’t be afraid to run to the outer room after taking a few swings. I’d probably run in close, and if I haven’t been hurt too badly already in those few steps, invoke Trog’s Hand and Berserk, and obliterate a statue. Then repeat for the other. If you ever feel really outclassed or in danger, then leave the cave. It’s not worth dying.

Press % to see an overview of your character, including all your resists.

Nicely done bepnewt. Btw, if the box on the bottom right starts to blink it's because someone is watching your game and trying to chat with you.

Gotcha. What sucks is I dropped my +2 Fire Bow a while back.

Good to know!

I ended up running in there with my Fire mace and did the statues one at a time and had no problems. I got a new Mace.

Downside is part of the loot was some cursed armor. I put it on but I'm not sure if it's really that bad or not. My Int is at -1 right now, and I'm slowed from something, but not sure what. Maybe it's the new Mace I just found that is slowing me?

Bah. Gotta work some more, now. I appreciate all the help. Is there another general DC:SS thread where I can post questions, etc., or is this the best one?

-BEP

This is the best thread here for questions. As I said in the chat window you really need to read a remove curse scroll to get rid of that armour. The -5 int is too bad for your char. As slow is a pretty bad effect and not being able to read scrolls most of the time really sucks for quick escapes.

Can you even read a scroll with -1 Int?

No you can’t read scrolls. Negative stats will get you killed, for a variety of reasons. If not for the int-5 on those ice dragon scales, they would be absolutely amazing. But as it stands, you need to get rid of them.

And actually, they’re only +1, maybe “absolutely amazing” is an overstatement. You’d be better off with +12 gold scales. Or maybe crystal plate armor, if you happen to find some. Basically you’re playing a badass tank; dress appropriately.

Sorry, Zaque, I didn't see your message up there and didn't see the chat blinking.

I drank a potion of Brilliance to read the Remove Curse so got the curse gone.

There's a Trove on this level that wants a +4 Shadow Dragon Scales to open it. That makes me think there will be one that needs Ice Dragon Scales. I'm not wearing the Ice Dragon Scales one anymore, but should I keep it to potentially use as a Krey somewhere? I guess I could write a note somewhere that I left it on D12 if I need it again, eh?

I'll drop it.

I'm a f***ing hoarder so this game's limited inventory is killing me. Too many scrolls. I need to get them identified so I can drop ones I won't need.

Edit: Zaque, the amulet was cursed, too. Booo! I still don't have an amulet.

Quote be not Edit.

I think merphle mentioned this above, but most experienced players do some form of read ID'ing on unknown scrolls at a certain point. I generally read-ID scrolls on levels I've cleared out starting with D3 or D4. Save your identify scrolls for potions and whatnot.

So, you don't need to hoard stuff, the game hoards stuff for you.

To find anything you have seen, you can search for it:

Hit CTRL-f and type in what you are searching for. It will show you everything you have seen that matches along with a letter to fast travel to it.

Only keep stuff on you that you may need right away. So scrolls and potions are good things to keep. Also, any rings you want to change into at a moments notice. For instance, when I find a ring of protection from cold, I will only wear it when I have a cold-damaging enemy on screen, assuming I don't have other rC+ gear on in which case I will just drop the ring. Changing rings costs 1 turn so is cheap to do.

You can also ditch potions and scrolls you won't need quick access to but might need sometime. As a Trog worshipper, the times you need brilliance are going to be vanishingly small, so you can drop those and use Find if you ever do need them.

Can you tell when the tourney started?

Credit goes to tboon for that hot scroll & potion advice.

Scroll-ID all your potions.
Read-ID all your scrolls.

Btw, I might also advise using a customized RC file. The standard default one is fine, but there are much better ones available to make it easier to navigate your UI. I'd recommend my own RC file, which is basically a copy of Ultraviolent4's RC with a couple of tweaks that he's neglected to make.

Oh, thanks for posting your RC file. Mine is now just the basic one, and constantly getting stuck on "more" in complex battles was driving me nuts. There are a few other changes I'd like to make as well.

A custom RC file makes the game a lot less friction-y to play. Mine is currently a mess, it works OK for me, but I need to clean it up. I would rather just play the game instead though

Wow, that's a huge rc file. Mine is pretty slim by comparison: https://crawl.kelbi.org/crawl/rcfiles/crawl-git/math.rc

Well, Elven Halls:3 is a serious hot mess. I've used all of my healing potions, 2 of my teleport scrolls, all of my blink scrolls, and 2 fog scrolls. I think I'll bail out of here until I'm a little stronger.

CTRL-F: Wow. That's awesome. Thanks.

I got everything IDd, thanks for the advice on that, folks.

I'll give your .rc file a shot, Merphle.

D'oh. I decided to bail on the Elven Halls and instead of warping out to continue where I was, I semi-warped by going to each level on the way out since I didn't remember where I came from. I went up some stairs that took me to a different part of the Orc Mines that isn't connected to where I went before. Glad I didn't warp all the way out!

Congrats math on your win. I don't see how you guys can get through so quickly. I just ended an almost 9 hour win as a MiFi of Yred. Probably two hours of that was AFK with my kids but still a really long game. Actually the first game I've ever played with Yred. Enjoyed playing him but its a real slog with all those servants.

Grats on the win! Trog is really easy compared to Yred and makes for a faster game: pop Trog's Hand, go zerk, hold tab til everything is dead. Or you are. That being said, I find that Makhleb makes for even faster games: my PB is a 2hr 36k turn DDFi^Mak.

Also, DAAAAANG bepnewt you're doing awesome! I can't remember how many games I played before I even got into my first rune branch...

Congrats, Copingsaw! Three wins for team v23.

I've never gotten a win with Yred. I've heard he's quite a powerful god, but I've only seen him in conjunction with a Necromancy-based character. Maybe I just misunderstand his true power.

Congrats, math and CopingSaw!

Elven Halls is usually the death of me if I don't have sufficient MR and forget to check before taking the dive.

In case you care, since you are playing during the tournament, you do have a tournament page with your current game stats. I think it is interesting to look at from time to time.

Thanks, Math. It's a combo of playing EZMode MiBe and being (mostly) real careful. I think if I would Leroy it a little more, it would be more fun - although I'm having a ton as is.

I need to berserk more. I use it, but only when I think I'll need it. I should probably just spam it, eh?

I just got my first ever rune. Almost died multiple times in Shoals. Getting up stairs with a sliver of health is a scary thing, especially when you're poisoned and running with manticore spikes in you. I _knew_ I was dead a couple times.

Oh yeah! Scored Blink Boots! I haven't tried them, yet, but Blink scrolls have saved my ass multiple times, now.

I'm in the Snake Pits(?) now. No poison resist.

Good job, Math and CSaw.

Very good job you're doing BEP. Just remember the blink boots won't be a controlled blink but a random one. Still very useful, more so as your evocations increases as you will fail less.
You could try and push a little further down in the dungeon (say to level 14 or maybe even 15) in the hopes of finding poison resist.

Congrats to Rauc! First win for team Hubris Maximus! Nicely done.

Has anyone gone through one of the new gauntlets yet. I am in one and it looks real challenging for my glass cannon DeFe.

I've gone through them a few times. The first time killed me -- not the gauntlet itself, but the javelin-chucking Minotaur at the end.
