Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup - The Soupening

Yeah the few times I've gone looking for the rune in Abyss it wasn't that bad. I actually found 4 better than 3 for hunting the rune because I was running out of teleport scrolls. I do think you need to clear out Vaults 4 and depths before you make a decision, as a shield plus reflection makes Vaults a bit easier imho.

+1 to Abyss 4 being where to do the hunting - the mobs are not terrible but the probability of getting a vault seems much higher. I always try to dive (as best you can in Abyss) to 4 - on 3 it seems like you just have to get really lucky.

Oh I didn’t even notice that. Definitely finish clearing Dungeon, then through V:4, then through U:5 before thinking about rune 3

Will do. Hopefully I will be back to report progress. One thing I learned early on is to be very careful aiming greater destruction when you have friendlies nearby. I turned one of my guys against me with a cloud.

Sigh, another one bites the Dust in the Depths.

I am thinking of trying casters for a bit. Anyone have strong thoughts on GrEE of Veh vs DDEE of Mahk?

Also, a commentated 36 minute DDFi speedrun by Ultraviolent4.

Man, I forgot all about this game! I should put in some time over the long weekend. Thanks, thread!

Try a DrFE^Veh. Draconians are pretty tough beasts to start, and FE start makes it even stronger. Fireball (in the starting book) will carry you very far, once you get it to a nicely castable point.

My only caster win to-date is with a GrEE^Veh. It's a 100% pure blaster-caster with unresistable physical damage, plus all of Gargoyle's tasty goodies too. Would highly recommend.

Agreed, that was my first caster win. It's a potent build.

Is book of Necromancy worth working on as a GrEE^Veh? Gr have a low aptitude for Necromancy, but Animate Dead would be really handy in Vaults and Zot.

If it has B. Vile Clutch, yes. That synergizes with your earth apt.

No, they pulled that out of the beginner Necromancy book.

Furthest I've ever made it with a SpEn: https://pastebin.com/c9gGatmR

I can't remember having a worse game in terms of loot. No amulets. Nothing with resistances. No invis potions. The only good thing is I found a quickblade and a ton of enchant weapon scrolls.

So what now? I guess stab my way through Depths, ninja the Abyss rune, and win? Sounds easy enough...

Vaults to V:4 and Depths to U:5 before making any decisions — but yes, probably Abyss.

Oh, I forgot to mention the most important tip of all for Spriggan Enchanters: make sure you tap the keys on your keyboard extra-softly to maximize your chances of passing stealth checks.

No joke: I actually move toward sleeping targets slower to "not wake them up."

Update on the char: https://pastebin.com/g0H1z22g
Vaults1-4 is cleared, making my slow way through depths. I feel like I should be using Dith's abilities more...

Related corollary: With Minotaur Beserkers, smashing as hard as you can on that tab key is the best way to ensure a successful and devastatingly strong hit. It's proven to work.

When I miss with the hard TAB, I always switch to the hard direction key. Because sometimes switching things up will work better.

Died on Zot:1 https://crawl.jorgrun.rocks/morgue/m...

Note to self: White Draconian breath hurts a lot when you don't have rC.

If I do another SpEn I might go Gozag instead. I barely used Dith's stuff (besides the aura passive, obviously) and most of my difficulties came from crappy itemization.

Aura passive and shadow-mimic passive.

But yeah, I have heard before that Dith is good to help boost stealth for characters that are otherwise lacking stealth, and picking Dith on a SpEn isn’t very valuable. Gozag or Fedhas (I think) for SpEn is more recommended, but that doesn’t stop me from always taking Dith.

Dith seems to work well in hybrid characters like necromancers. For stabbers I will usually go Kiku (if Vp) or Ash.

Well that's a bit of an upgrade.

I didn't know ScottishTwitter was a language option!

I assume playing on Jogrun Rocks server (CJR).

Yeah. That can be enabled/disabled on any server via rcfile, I believe. I turned it off when I play on CJR.

Really? I don't play on CJR even though it is the closest server to me because of the brogue thing. If I can turn it off though...

Edit your RC file. Right near the bottom there should be a setting that says "language=fakedwarven" or something like that. Delete that line and enjoy. CJR is great.

Edit: I had it slightly wrong.

fake_lang = <lang1>[,<lang2>[,...]]
Set one or more fake languages, applied in the order provided (order
does matter!) The same language can be set more than once, though it
may not end up making much sense... At most 3 fake langs can be set at
a time.

Options are: (dwarven|jagerkin|kraut|runes|wide|grunt|butt:<n>)
Experiment to find out what they do!

Use runes for a truly strange experience. I don't mind the dwarven as much as, say, jagerkin or kraut. Notice that it only changes some of the text; most menus are as usual.

Weirdest game ever.

After way too many deaths I finally won with a ranged combo: CeHu^Oka https://crawl.jorgrun.rocks/morgue/m...

Oka was his typically troll self and gave me garbage longbows for the whole game; luckily I found tons of enchant weapon scrolls to use on bows I grabbed from Centaurs.

I had tons of slaying (+11) and just facerolled my way through the later game.
