The Old Republic playing solo?

Just beat KOTOR I and II again and i'm itching for some more SW RPG stuff. I know there are some gripes in the gaming community about SWTOR's F2P structure, but has anybody played through the regular story arc without paying anything? I know if you don't pay there is some major barriers, especially when it comes to the more epic scenarios and the end-game, but I don't have enough time to sink into that stuff and just want to go through the main story solo.

I'm keen to hear the answer to this too. I loved those two games but just can't be bothered with most MMORPG stuff.

Also do you need a powerful PC to play or will it get by on one a few years old?

Played solo through to 50 prior to the game going F2P. I haven't played it since, but looking over the other half's shoulder, I can't see why you couldn't solo as a F2P.

Both our machines are a few years old (or older), and handled the game properly.

The main storyline is very soloable and it's also relatively easy to jump into 2 and 4 man heroic missions without any real commitment. There are two things I would keep in mind though:

1 FTP in SWTOR means your sacrificing time for money. You're going to level much more slowly as a brand new player. Since time is an issue, I'd highly recommend subbing if you like the intro planet.

2. You get a good amount of xp doing space missions, PVP and multiplayer flashpoints, so you may want to consider branching out eventually.

3. Even with speed boosts you're probably looking at 100 hours or so to beat the main mission. Not sure what time commitment you're looking at but I was able to play through the entire ME storyline in less time than it took me to beat the trooper storyline.

I dig the game and have a subscription so I'm not sure how to answer the F2P aspect. But from what I've heard the sacrificing time for money trade off is accurate.

An alternative might be to just pick up a subscription for 2-3 months - it'll be the same price as a KOTOR sequel and that is plenty of time with regular play to complete the main storyline for at least one of the classes.

Plus i'm not sure you can do the 50-55 content without paying for it. May be different now.

My system:

Intel Core2 Quad 2.66GHz processor
4GB RAM
HSI Radeon HD 6770 with 1GB GDDR5
Win7 64bit

I built this system from spare parts Robear gave me a handful of years back (3-5 years ago), when he upgraded them in one of his machines. Except for the video card, I got that on clearance about two years back. I run it fine, though I don't run anything nowadays at full graphics. I'm normally in the mid-to-low range on detail in most games. But still, it runs fine with the settings tuned down a bit (not all the way down, so it still looks decent).

I actually found I uninstalled it a while back, but left the icon on my desktop. Reinstalled and I'm thinking of giving it a little time here and there to scratch that KotOR itch.

If you're coming at the game from a KOTOR 1/2 perspective, I'm afraid you may be disappointed. Though Bioware insisted SWTOR was a continuation of KOTOR, it certainly didn't feel that way to me when I played it. You'll find several references to KOTOR, but little resolution.

I only played back when it was sub-only, but I did so almost entirely solo (notwithstanding my getting mowed down by Ranalin's lightsabers in chance PvP matchups every now and again, and the occasional "could an available goodjer please help me with this jumping puzzle before I end it all?!?").

I do recall some missions towards the end that were pretty tough without help, but finding folks to help was not hard at all in-game IIRC.

You can definitely play through all of the class storylines solo but a lot of the big "OMG!" KOTOR linked story moments are only seen if you complete some of the full party dungeons. So basically they have a story going on behind the story if you do a series of the dungeons.

Sorry I'm late.

I have done this with several characters. The story is about the only thing you can do F2P, everything else has severe limitations. You'll level slower, I usually get to the end of a story around level 45-46 which may be tough. Just try to do flashpoints (instances) and pvp when you have time for extra xp as you level up.

can you do the space combat for free?

for free only so many a week.
