Stranger in a Strange Land: Help a heathen among the believers

It's about 3 towns just outside of the greater Vancouver area. Once you get out of cities, in Canada, communities tend to get more religious.

Yeah, this was farm country in SK. Southern AB was basically Idaho North.

Fun comment today. My mother's breast cancer has come back. Fortunately, the scheduled screenings caught it fairly early, so they're thinking that a lighter round of chemo should knock it back on their heels. One of my coworkers today swung by my cubicle to wish my family well, which was very kind.

Until he said, "I just want you to keep something in mind. Just think how much healthier your mom might be if you were praying for her each day. It effects her, too." He patted me on the shoulder, and walked away.

If only I wasn't so selfish.

1. I'm really sorry about your mom.
2. Report that situation to your boss.
3. That person has absolutely no idea how prayer works according to the Bible.
4. That person has a sketchy view at best of the God described in the Bible. So the reason people die of cancer is that they don't pray enough? Smh

INORITE!

Intercessionary prayer is the least sincere form of prayer and shouldn't be your go-to form of worship.

Also there seems to be a massive streak in a lot of US Christianity that seems to have forgotten the central message of God's Grace. Which, you know, is kind of the whole crux (pun partially intended) of the faith.

When your co-workers have family members who die, do they bring in a cake and balloons to celebrate how the deceased is now in a better place? You should start that tradition if they aren't doing it already. "Congratulations on your brother's death! I hope he puts in a good word to Jesus for you!"

Sorry about your mom. Good thing God made her get it detected early.

Well, "X has gone to a better place" is something you actually hear from a number of religious folks in the south. I haven't seen cake and balloons, however.
